- Heya! Since I became completely obsessed with sock knitting I thought it might be nice to share some tips & tricks with you and answer all your sock related questions. If you have any other tips or questions, leave them in the comments. I hope this video makes you feel less intimidated by knitting socks haha, because they truly are such fun projects! Voolenvine’s How To Knit Socks tutorial on her channel is an AMAZING first sock tutorial, it’s what I’m using right now to make my first pair and it’s very easy to understand and follow. The clear visual instruction is so helpful when making it for the first time!

I've just discovered your podcasts and I,m enjoying them. I'm really impressed with your color-work socks. I've knit many more than 100 pairs of socks in the past few years, but only a few are color-work. Good for you for taking them on. I recently made the Blooming Lavender Socks and I love them, but they do take more brain-power. But, now I'm inspired to knit more of them.
One of the things I first noticed about my hand-knit wool socks was that at the end of the day my feet were not damp and sweaty. I wear hand-knit socks almost every day now (only on the hottest days do I not wear them).
My suggestion for avoiding 2nd sock syndrome: I cast on the first sock and then the second sock. I knit the cuff on one and then the cuff on the 2nd, then the leg the same way, one heel then the other, etc. So, at the end I'm doing 2 toes - one after the other. It works for me.

I started sock knitting last year. I have been knitting for 50 years but have not done much colourwork. I love your lavender socks and might give them a go.

I’m on my 8th pair and I’m still getting hung up and have to refer back to videos for heel/ gusset and even the foot decrease as to which side gets the ssk and k2tog. I always mix that up and end up with wonky decrease seams. But I’m still having fun and love that I can make something with my hands. Plus nothing comes close to the burst of love and happiness I feel when my husband gushes about my Frankenstein socks. He loves them and has a few pair in rotation now. I have a couple pair but mine are the experimentals like when I tried contrasting toes/heels& patterns. I try them again on his and they turn out a bit better. My current pair are probably the best looking and it’s only because it’s been a lot of practice. It does get better, you just have to hang in there. Sometimes when I’m struggling & getting frustrated, I go back to hats and scarves.

The Heartstopper socks are so fun but also such a challenge to make, so the pattern will take a while but that's always the case with pattern design haha

The "thread" inside the Lang sock yarn is not for mending; it's intended to be held double with the yarn when working the heel and toe. It's a reinforcing thread.
Ahh at my local yarn shop they told me it can be used for mending and fixing small mistakes. I guess it can be used for multiple purposes ;)
I started knitting with worsted weight yarn. Then worked my way down. However, I knit the easiest socks. Toe up, two at a time. I use Turkish cast on. Yarnover increases, peasant heel. They fit me fine. Also, self striped yarn. Everyone thinks I'm so smart, but the yarn does all the work.
I am knitting my first pair of socks and I was worried about second sock syndrome and about the socks potentially not fitting (I am terrible at figuring out gauge) so I am knitting socks toe up, two at a time. I am finding its not that much more complicated than knitting one sock at a time and its easier to make the socks the same because you are knitting the same row on each sock, row by row. Since I am doing toe up socks, I can check the size regularly to make sure they fit.
Yes knitting 2 socks at the same time is the only reason I would give magic loop another try haha. It sounds so cool!
To get rid of second sock syndrome I always cast on two at the time on two separate 9in needles. Finishing rib in each, then leg and before you notice you are doing toes on second one. 😁😁 works every time

Measure your foot and then find a food can in your pantry that is the same circumference so you can ‘try it on’ to check how tight the sock will be.

How do you remove dog hair when washing socks? My normal way of washing knits onky took care of the dirt (hand wash with wool wash) and pills (brushing). PS it's hot and humid in VA but I wear my socks year round. In summer, I prefer fine gauge wool socks in my hiking boots. They keep my feet dry and offer some pading to prevent blisters. Merino with nylon wash a bit easier. 100% wool socks, I wear in the house or I put them on to warm up in yoga class. They help my big toe (it had surgery and tends to be stiff) warm up and become flexible a bit quicker.
The dog hair question is one I'd very much like an answer too as well! So far I haven't found the perfect way to get it out of mu socks.

Thank you! Mmm.. usually I never work only on socks so they take me about 2 weeks to finish a pair, but I've knitted them in one week as well. Depends on how much time I have haha

ever since knitting and crochet became more popular during the pandemic, the dunning-kruger effect has been on near constant display. as much as i enjoy seeing an increase in knitting and crochet content, i'm not as keen on advice videos by people who have been at this for half a year.
Thank you for sharing your insights. However, I never claim to be an expert on this topic. I simply shared the things that I wish I would have known before starting sock knitting. As a new sock knitter I felt like there were many things that people didn't talk about and by sharing the things I have learned I thought it would help some people. I do validate your opinion but personally I do not think that sharing your work online is something only very advanced knitters are entitled to do. In the end I want to create a space where everybody can learn from each other and in no way do I want to gatekeep the craft of knitting. But feel free to skip the advice videos if you are not really interested in them ;)

Interesting comment. I’ve personally been knitting for almost 20 years, but I am able to admit that some knitters who have been knitting for less time try more complicated skills and/are just better knitters than I am. I don’t think that you gain some special knitting skills just by the amount of time you’ve been doing it.
