"After Uvalde": Maria Hinojosa on Guns, Grief & Community Outrage 1 Year After Texas School Shooting

  • Wednesday marks one year since an 18-year-old gunman armed with a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle entered his former elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and shot dead 19 children between the ages of 9 and 11 and two of their teachers, as nearly 400 officers rushed to Robb Elementary School but took 77 minutes to confront the gunman. Investigators later found officers "failed to prioritize saving innocent lives over their own safety." More than 1,000 incidents involving firearms have shaken America's schools since 2018 - a dramatic increase over any similar period since at least 1970, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database. We discuss this uniquely American epidemic with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, the founder of Futuro Media and host of Latino USA. She anchors the upcoming Frontline_, Futuro Media and _Texas Tribune co-production, After Uvalde: Guns, Grief & Texas.

I hope that someone has the courage to publish the photos and the videos of the massacre. The bodies. The disfigured, scattered bodies of those kids. When and if the families agree, obviously. Rational arguments don't work with these folks. Numbers don't count. A coordinated campaign of this type, a shocking display of the horrors that they facilitated, could make a lot of sense where there's none. I'm sorry, but i'm tired of this. It's all so unbelievably evitable.

Was it ever explained how the shooter was equipped with thousands of dollars worth of new weapons and ammo? He, nor his family, had any sort of money. I guess the weapons also played into the scenario of the cops allowing the shooting to go on, waiting in the school's hallway for over 90 minutes before bursting into that classroom. Once the cops entered the classroom, the perpetrator was dead withing five minutes!!! It makes you think, though, doesn't it!

The only way to shake people out of apathy is with something dramatic. Emmet Till's viewing did indeed spark the civil rights act. Some would argue that doing so might make people more jaded to this type of violence. My counter to that is: Look around. Aren't we already pretty jaded to this?

You want to protect your children.. here is what you do.. you do for the children as the government does for its own employees.. that is, you do not enter into a court house where Judges sit and not be searched on the way in.. and you have armed security at the door.. how many judges do you see being shot to death? NONE while in the court buildings.. take all of the revenue generating police we have out there writing thousands and thousands of tickets and put them as security inside the schools.. and it can be as little as 2 per school.. one door open at the front of the building, the other doors locked, no entrance from the outside whatsoever.. only can be unlocked from the inside which will be for emergencies only with alarms to go off if they are opened.. its really this simple.. and every municipal in every city will be responsible for implementing it in their cities.. by LAW.. schools are basically open from early morning to about 5 or 6 in the evening.. so have either 2-6 hour shifts or 1-12 hour shift.. I would go with the 2-6 hour shifts.. 6am to Noon, and Noon to 6pm.. after which they can head on home.. or you can have one shift from 6am to 2pm, a full 8 hour shift, and then have another 4 hour shift till 6pm.. after which they can go back out on the streets for the other 4 hours.. It does not matter how you run it.. but its meant to keep the kids safe like you would do for a judge..

Nobody is forced to buy her book which topic seems even is unrelated to the event and only meant as a "author cretential contextual introduction as pulitzer price recipient" and frankly the intention is not to bank on the event empathy of the people rather to produce quality work covering the event in its many lesser known aspects. The fact that she spent time going to the place and recoiling the people testimony and could experience first hand (not just repeating uniform headlines missinformation such as "the new normal" of networks practices) and share their real feelings and tragedy means she made the earnest effort of living through the experience closely, as the prediatrician she shared the testimony of can tell. It's not self or business purpose promotion intended. It's decent sharing of the context and close reality experience of the event relaying to the audience so we can form a more accurate opinion about it than the saldy all too common and poor quality reporting "unpreventable and helpless tragedy narrative" others try to inform our opininons of the matter with.

    @fra2847 11 месяцев назад

Not the ideal solution, but until the politics changes which could take decades, why not provide teachers and school staff or school security agents with AR15 as well as publicly funded training. At least the school killers would think twice before attempting the school shootings and that could suffice in reducing them 10 fold to 1 school shooting per month instead the current statistics of 1 a day. Else the adults are defensless and can do nothing to defend the children under their care. With basic prepardness at least thez could act. Lack of prepardness is always tantamount to lack of prevention of what could be prevented otherwise, if not all the killings themseves at least the high number of them. The teacher in those classroom could have easilz dettered or reduced the number of kids dying by fighting back and at least sacrificing themselves making sure the number of kids dying would be significantly less. Instead they could do nothing simplz because they had no AR15 readily available to defend themselves, to self-defend themselves. And at least with those AR15 and public funding of every school staff memeber to self-defense they can do something in each and every new case of school assault of and can reduce that risk responsibly. Doing nothing instead and hoping for the best is not a solution and quite irresponsible for the kids under thez care while they have the means to self-protection and self=defense available to them. Also, the fear and anguish of school staff memebers going to school everz day wondering if they are to be next is quite toxic athmosphere to teach children. At least with proper self-defense means at their disposal they could feel more in control and ready to address in some way any suc future situation by at least reducing the number of casualities with self-defense actions.
Also, since the police officers don't care to act when they are paid to, why not defund them and instead fund the school staff weapons and self-defense training with the police fundings. Since those police officers fear more poverty than AR15, take their funds and pension away as proper incentive and you can be sure their "bravery" and sense of duty will come back to their sense in no time. Else, do the simple thing, take their funds and pension away and reallocate them to schools self=defense programs.
The primary question to ask oneself is why are there as many school shootings and how to reduce them, not why the shooters do it.
A simple answer to whzy so many is because the shooters know the schools are currently verz easz targets and thez risk literalz nothing bz going to schools with kids to do their deeds. That's the main reason because there are not daily Police stations shootings, because the shooters know they have close to yero odds to do as much damage in police stations. Silmpz because Schools are defensless.
A simple answer to how to reduce drastically the numbers and the scope of school shooting is as simple. Provide weapons and public funds previous ly allocated to police stations to schools. It doesn't take rocket science degree to know right of the bat that school shooter would at least be scared to go doint their deeds to schools if they know that from now on they are to be met with much more weapons and trained staff members. Thez would know the odds are stacked against them.
Then also, teachers would do a better jobs preventing children potential shooters by addressing the issue and making it a school topic to prevent it early on in school curriculum reducing the underlying problem of not having school programs dealing with the issue with kids early on which would lessen the chances and statistics ultimately of children assaullting schools. For the rest non schildren shooters, trained and self-defense ready school staff member would shift the courage burden to the shschool shooter as they would know it would teake them much more effort and fear attempting their deeds knowing multiple staff members would response with self defense rather than being defensless targets.

On average the Anti Gun community says, that 100 (36,5k)-130 (47,450), people die from firearms daily of BUT,they don't tell you that more then half are suicide, and that don't include the 1-2 million that commit or survive suicide by other means and 80%-82% of the rest is Gang on Gang & the rest is crime against citizens, accidental and police shootings.
Per the CDC'S Sight, the so called, GUN PANDEMIC/ HEALTH ISSUE,came in at #23 from the top of ways people die in this country with #1 of course being the worse. Now,this doesn't include the 130k that die from Snake bites yearly or the 250k that die from Dr. Negligence yearly or the 600k Abortions of witch 1/4 are done at full term from what I hear. THAT'S (MURDER) 150k full term Babies aborted and NONE of the Mother's or Medical staff charged...so this puts the way people die from Guns, down to 26 on the CDC'S Sight just to mention some other one's and don'tforget covid. So were is this So Called "Gun PANDEMIC/HEALTH issue...
To Recape-OVER 35x'S MORE, PER DAY, a firearm is used for defence. 35x'S more.Look @ what they got away with in the last 4 yrs, now Imagine what they will get away with IF, they take our gun's...
    HISTORY FACTS:
Switzerland, issues ALL of it's citizens GUNS and proper training witch gives them the lowest rate of GUN crime of any civilized country in the world, and if you try to use the excuse that they have strict gun regulations, then you have to factor in that we have 36x's more people and GUNS then they do, in an more dence populated cities. If you do the math, SHOOTING death are a very small %.
    Around 0.012% YEARLY
THE Government tells us, taking GUNS, via "Buy Backs", or via shaming and using mass shootings, is for our protection. But history teaches diffrent and here are some examples...
1911-Turkey ESTABLISHED gun control then from 1915-1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to protect themselves, were rounded up and exterminated...
1929- Soviet union does the same with GUN control, and 1923-53, about 20 million of it's citizens met the same fate by it's GOVERNMENT...
1935- China does the same to it's citizens from 1948-52 about 20 million political people met their maker thanks to Chinese government.
1938-Germany, well we know this part. From 1939-45, 13 million Jews met their maker.
    1956-Cambodia 1975-77 exterminated it's 1 MILLION EDUCATED people.
1964-Guatemala, from 1964-1981 100 THOUSAND Mayan Indians wdrdd exterminated.
1970-Uganda from 1971-79, 300 THOUSAND Christian's, exterminated. And during the 80's-90s, the tutti or tutu WIPE out over 1 million other Africans using Machetes and Ak's that included kid's and babies.
A total of 56 million people were rounded up and MURDERED by their GOVERNMENTS in the name of GUN control, and our safety in the 20th CENTURY alone.
    P.S.
3-4x's more people are killed by other weapons, like knives, and BEATINGS BY HANDS AND feet per year than guns 3-4X'S per year per FBI UCR UNIFORM CRIME REPORT yearly.
THE GOVERNMENT, HAS ONLY ONE AGENDA FOLKS, AND THAT IS, TO DISARM US. FOR ALL OF YOU THAT ARE HELPING YOU WILL REGRET THIS IF YOU DON'T WAKE THE FUCK UP...

      Wow! That’s a big question.
I think we can look at the gun problem.
The mental health issues, especially with the shooters
Ourselves for voting ignorantly - none of us really imagine that a politician will put the money from gun companies or any company or individual before the lives of citizens
It’s definitely hard to forgive the police who want admit fault
      We grieve.
When times allows we seek compassion towards ourselves
We seek compassion towards those who cause harm
And then, maybe then, we can move towards forgiveness, which will be healing primarily for our own hearts.
How you can be kind to yourself in the meantime. Self compassion is the only tool that will allow us to survive wisely.
And I’m just seeing your name/handle 😂 Healthy humor is a must!!!
