    ** What happened **
While climbing to altitude, this three-way belly group changed the exit plan. Shockingly - yes, that was sarcasm - there was a bunch of confusion in the door. When Jumper 1 started to climb out, Jumper 2 didn’t realize he was going to the camera step. He exited, reached out for the first jumper, and snagged the D-handle as he tumbled out. Somehow the pin was not dislodged, and the jumper safely deployed at normal altitude, and landed his main.
** Why did it happen **
    Confusion
The first jumper thought he was getting onto the camera step. The second jumper thought he was chasing him out the door. So, when Jumper 1 got out, Jumper 2 followed and - in a confused panic - reached for the first jumper not knowing what was going on.
    Poor situational awareness
Before the group even exited, the second jumper already came very close to grabbing Jumper 1’s D-handle while still in the plane. He thought that the first jumper was exiting too soon and grabbed him to hold him in the plane and check the spot. He didn’t realize how close his hand was to that handle.
** How could it be prevented **
    Planning
When you decide on a dive flow or an exit, don’t start changing plans while you're in the plane. Given that Jumper 1 was relatively new (60 jumps), the more experienced jumpers should have just stuck with the plan they had agreed with on the ground. Had they just gone with the original plan, all the chaos in the door would have probably been avoided.
    Watch those handles!
There’s really no excuse for - not once, but twice - almost snagging someone’s reserve handle on climb-out or exit. It doesn’t matter if you’re exiting linked, chasing, or whatever - never blindly grab at someone’s rig.
    ** Additional Notes **
    Worst case scenario
This could have been a REALLY bad day because, had that reserve deployed while Jumper 1 was trying to get onto the camera step, it could have taken out the plane's tail/horizontal stabilizer and brought down the plane.
    Reserve cables
The reserve cable got pulled out quite a bit on exit but didn’t pull the pin on the reserve. One rigger reviewing this video noted that, while it was somewhat fortunate that a deployment didn’t occur due to the previously mentioned risk (above) to the plane, there are also some questions about why that reserve didn’t get deployed.
    Good communication
While not visible in the video, the jumpers stated that everyone on the jump knew that something was wrong. Jumper 2 claims he was attempting to explain to Jumper 1 that something had happened and Jumper 3 didn’t know what was going on but got the impression that they needed to abandon their dive flow and just bring it down. While this whole situation was somewhat sketchy, it would have been a lot worse had someone flown over Jumper 1 right before a reserve fire happened. Attempting to stay on level but at a distance was the right call.

Falling away with your hand “accidentally” gripping someone else’s handle would be weird enough but the slow motion shows a clear, intentional pull with the arm.

For those who are worried of why the reserve didn't deployed: he's using a spectra reserve ripcord (you can see in the video, it's a nylon-type cable coming out), it extends by that length like a bungee before starting to pull out the reserve pin. It has been designed to avoid a reserve deployment due to a handle dislodgment. Coincidentally that system saved his life.

He made sure he knew right where the cord was before they jumped. His plan to take him out or the plane didn’t work as it didn’t deploy so he’s trying to look innocent by telling him in the air.

The reserve handle is connected to the reserve pin by a cable. If you pull that handle (and thus the cable) far enough to extract the pin from the reserve loop, then the reserve canopy will open - regardless of whether the main canopy is still attached.
If you have an RSL (reserve static line) fitted, then one of the main canopy risers is also attached to the reserve pin, vis a separate cable. If your main canopy is deployed and then you cut it away, so long as the main is generating enough drag then it will pull the reserve pin as you fall away from it - regardless of whether or not you pull the reserve handle.

But even more important for this particular case is that they were making the argument he was reaching for the guy's strap on his pack, but after seeing that he's got a great hold of that SAME STRAP with his right hand, not only would he not have a need to grab it with his left hand also, think about it, what would that accomplish? But he would also know that he wasn't holding onto that strap with his left hand because he already had ahold of it with his right.....

Just a guess: perhaps there was elastic shock cord between the reserve handle and the pin that secures the reserve closing loop. Maybe the only thing keeping the reserve container closed was the tip of the pin against one side of the grommet!
WTH was with the guy grabbing handles on the exit? Yikes.

It looks like on the slow-mo replay the handle wasn't pulled all the way out luckily. It's just got a teflon cable that runs up through a loop keeping everything together, it wasn't pulled far enough out to release.

    • @Stepclimb
      @Stepclimb 3 года назад +8

      @@Rippers-TV
The slow motion replay seemed to show some retraction of the handle after it was released.
I guessed that it might have been a UPT spectra reserve cable or something similar.
It looked like the handle was pulled about 6-8 inches. If this had been a standard Teflon coated wire, it seems that the reserve pin would have completely cleared the loop with that much pull.
Either way, he’s very lucky his reserve didn’t deploy into the aircraft’s horizontal stabilizer!

Everyone saying it was intentional but isn't it possible he was trying to grab the strap his other hand was on? Watch it in slow mo and the hand is originally on the strap. Then the first guy begins to leave before he's ready so when he reaches back he accidentally grabs the handle and keeps trying to signal to him on the way down what happened and to pull.

One of the only time a High Pull Force helped to save the day.
The Mini D Ripcord is not correctly orientated in its pouch, on the way to the door.
The Velcro on these rigs is more appropriate for Barbie Dolls or Ladies Lingerie.
The spectra Ripcord allows the handle to be fitted in all sorts of wrong ways.
SunPath and some others, arrange their Ripcord pouch so that the handle can go in deeper,
the MLW is not stitched down directly at the back of the pouch
and the high quality Velcro(that stick like snot to a school boys lip) also help to keep the handle Safely secured.

As long as it deploys cleanly and your main is still in the container, then you just have a long ride down under your reserve.

Good observation, the straight edge of the D-ring should be inside, but it's reversed. So it was put in backwards, creating a bigger snag hazard from the beginning. Nobody did a gear check or caught that in the plane before they jumped out

    • @kennybeach342
      @kennybeach342 3 года назад +1

@@spy6527 if I had to venture a guess, the velro inside the main lift web is old and not staying anymore, so the jumper likely has the handle fall out frequently and just pushed it back it without really knowing which way its supposed to go. This has almost exclusively been the cause of that, that I have seen in my years as a rigger, LO, and Instructor. I hope anybody seeing this thats a new jumper will take away that it is important to not only check yours and everyone else's gear, but to also know how your gear is supposed to be put together and operated
