id love to see you react to her 25th aniversary performance as ebinene in les mis. so you can see some of the stylistic choices she made between the stage performance and the film. personally she will always be ebinene in my mind, she does such a good job of the part.
She's done pretty well on stage though. She's currently Elsa in Frozen on west end and she's had plenty of very successful theatre roles. But I agree, she really should have become a household name with the kind of talent she has.
@@beckyc8104 oh yeah she’s done amazingly well in her career, and she did try and break into Hollywood, it’s just a shame that didn’t work out for her. But she’ll always be a successful theatre icon! So much talent
Samantha Barks is my favorite Eponine. She captures the vulnerability, sadness, yet just a bit of hope that we have all experienced with unrequited love like no other actress/singer who has performed the role.
Samantha Barks is honestly one of my favorite performers. From starting on ALWs “I’d Do Anything”, to find a Nancy for his production of Ol!ver, to Elsa in Frozen. And yes, this entire movie was sung live. On My Own was probably one of my favorite numbers because it was the most believable. You’re unrequited love chose someone else, you’re in the cold rain…you’re essentially in pain.
See you can appreciate her in that performance going ‘I’m going all out putting everything I’m hitting my best and loudest notes…’ then the raw beauty of this where it’s still amazingly sung but it doesn’t need to be huge.
I was lucky enough to see her playing Eponine in the West End back in 2010. She slayed it, so I was super excited when they announced the casting for the film. They need to stop casting big names and just cast the west end stars, this performance shows why! it's their craft and they don't get enough credit for it.
It's crazy to think they told her to hold back on her vocals. They said she was making everyone sound bad, and her vocals were too powerful. She is an amazing singer, and actress. All hail the friendzone national anthem.
I know it’s kind of a controversial opinion, because everyone loves Anne Hathaway, but this performance saved the movie for me. I wasn’t a theatre person when this came out, and I was pretty disappointed with the movie overall until Sam sang this. After that, I discovered Lea Salonga’s version, and my love for theatre grew. I think Sam Barks is just incredible in this.
Samantha is wonderful, you can see her musical theatre experience trespass the screen, the way she sings, the way she expresses; as much as I enjoyed other actors performances, nothing compares to her (maybe Aaron Tveit). It becomes even much more noticible if you watch Les Mis performance at the Oscars, you can see how she had to "tone it down" to match the others,... and she is still a standout!
You're not wrong. I feel the big misstep this movie made is in its casting. Hugh Jackman is a good singer, but wasn't good enough to do Val Jean, same for Javert and Russel Crowe, and they hold up the entire first half the movie. This is why I've felt it gets much better in the second half, as Eddie Redmayne, Sam here, even Amanda Seyfried are stronger in their roles than Jackman and Crowe.
God I love Samantha Barks! She somehow managed to sit down and essentially curl up into a ball and still hit those notes. That’s amazing. Also the whole song barely has any cuts (camera changes) in it so could quite possibly have been shot all in one take. (Unlikely, but possible) On top of this, she is singing live whilst getting soaked from sprinklers that were making the rain. She is my favourite Eponine ever. There’s a reason she got to play the part in 3 different productions of the show.
I've watched the movie, and i really, really cried when she sang on my own, it's so painful that makes you want to never fall in love, specially in a one big, hopeless, one sided love. I actually got stock on this part and went over and over again. I mean, the sound was so raw that gives you the feeling that you're the one feeling what she's feeling. It's so painful😭
I’d listened to many versions of this song and always loved it, but Sam really made it REAL for me….really hits you in the feels. Slayed ❤ Honestly I can rarely watch Les Mis as I end up crying so hard I get dehydrated…is it just me?! 🥺
First off, can we just recognize what an amazing song that is? It really lifts anyone with the chops to perform it. That's why so many singers want to perform it. That said, it takes some serious chops to perform it well, and Samantha Barks slayed it!
I just found this . I love Samantha as Eponine, she puts so much feeling and expression into each part she plays. She is the best Eponine imho. Thanks!
My mom is a piano/ voice teacher. This is by far my favorite version of my favorite musical theater song. I’ve probably seen it live 5 times and heard multiple versions. This one is the first since I first head it to have my sobbing in the theater. So much emotion! Loved your reaction.
I’ve been waiting for this reaction since I stumbled across Audrey reacting to Lea Salonga. Sam is everything I ever wanted in an Eponine. I can listen to this version on repeat till the cows come home. Thank you Audrey!
i absolutely love samantha barks! she’s currently playing elsa in the west end musical frozen, i got the privilege of seeing her a few months ago.. she’s even better in person!! 😍
I'm still mad that Sam didn't win 'I'd Do Anything' in 2008, but she has had a much more prominent career than the winner so I guess it worked out okay. Cameron Mackintosh is a huge fan of hers, particularly for Les Mis and having a highly successful musical producer on side really helps. And it is deserved. Sam's range is fantastic.
@@keri_av6463 to be honest my fav was Rachel Tucker, the sing off between Sam and Rachel was incredible. But Sam was my favourite of the final three. So glad that Sam, Rachel and Jessie have all gone on to kill it professionally.
A lovely lady. My son lit a show for her in Lancaster a few years ago. She sang this and he made a jumble of lights finesse into a beautiful triclore. Like all of the best people, she acknowledged the people who helped her be as good as she is.
I love the music from les mis and how you analyze it and describe what’s actually going on and how difficult it can be to hit the notes opens my eye to true talent
Please do the Red and Black song with Aaron Tveit!!!!!! Aaron Tveit is one of the best voices in the movie and even on Broadway right now! Sam Barks and Aaron are what make this movie!
Mate is saw her play Nancy in Manchester and when she sang 'he needs me' I felt the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. They actually announced at the end of the performance that she had got Eponine in the Les mis film! Awesome day!
I will never forget the first time my son and I watched this movie. I told him its different from other ones. I said instead of speaking their lines they sing them. Lol he didnt go for it very much. I loved it.
I was lucky enough to be at the O2 Anniversary Concert of Les Mis, and she was beyond incredible live. My favourite West End star. Her Let It Go in Frozen is also spectacular!
Late in the comments… they recorded live with only a keyboard in their ear. The keyboard is FOLLOWING the artist’s lead then later they added the orchestral background… again based on how the singer acted in the moment. AbsolutEly beauTiful.
I love her voice! She is amazing as this role! Yes, I remember hearing that the cast sang live because they wanted their natural emotions as they were singing as opposed to having to act and lip sync to themselves. That way they were able to show the emotion as they were singing! This movie definitely had an amazing and talented cast!
Samantha Barks is just incredible - I’m desperate to see her as Elsa in the West End after her performance of Let It Go at the Royal Variety Performance a couple of years ago. Amazing!
I don't know if it's an urban myth, but there was a story that if she sang full pelt, there was an issue with the microphones. Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly what the issue was supposed to be.
If you are doing Les Miserables right now then you need to check out the Philip Quast version of Stars from the 10th Anniversary show and the One Day More with the 17 Jean Vajeans from the same show. Both are amazing!
Yeah you say she knows this part... at the time of being cast in the movie I am fairly certain she was in the west end cast of Les Miserable playing this part. I remember reading something they had trouble with her voice because she was too used to singing on a stage and would try to project as if she still had to get to the back row.
Yeah you can tell. She's way more powerful in the stage version but I would have probably felt out of place doing it that way in the film. Both of her versions are incredible.
I never noticed the differences in the I love him lines and I'm a huge fan of the musical. It's been awhile since I watched/listened to Les Mis, but I think that the end of on my own works well as her realization of her love. Before that she shows that she's attracted to him and that she is hurt that he falls for another girl, but I don't think she says the words until On My Own.

I have to disagree with you about the "I love him"s. She's stated that she loved him many times already in the song, so it's not as though she's just realizing it. I see a girl who has built up these wonderful scenes in her head where he's by her side and loving her just as much as she loves him, and she's built these scenes because of the years of abuse she's suffered at the hands of her parents, and life as a poor person at that time in general. But now, she's seen the man she loves falling in love with someone else, and it's a girl she once thought of as a sister. So she consoles herself again with her fantasies, but for the first time she pictures him singing to a different girl as she sings the first "I love him" and the idea stops her for a moment. Then as she sings the second "I love him" a little stronger, he's vanishing from her side in the fantasy and appearing by Cosette's side. The final "I love him" is her acceptance that her love for him will always remain, but it will now always be "but only on my own", as she watches the hope of their love crumble away before her eyes. And it breaks my heart even more that she follows him to the barricades knowing she could die, but not caring because she would die with him nearby and she might be able to protect him by dying in his place... because "she loves him". That's the reason for the song "A Little Fall of Rain" and the reason why it rips my heart out more than any other song in the show - that and the fate of the boy Gavroche.
