Lea has said this song had to be perfect because she was Asian. She had to prove casting a person of color in a traditionally white role was warranted .She was denied other roles because of skin color.
and she never used the race card - she just kept improving herself!
I still remember when she thanked AE during 1991 Tony Awards, she was freaking savage.
@@HelloWorld-ev9sg context?
On that basis all the cast would be French AND the Musical wouldn't exist at all! (I take it that you know the history of its creation?).
I can't say she proved that point then.
Lets face it...she set the standard on how this role was to be played! As did most of the original cast.
The Frances Ruffelle earasure :-O
Colm Wilkinson ( Jean Valjean) when he sings " Bring him home". Moves me to tears! Nobody should EVER be allowed to sing that song again! LoL.
@@williamgaudino2513 Yes Frances Rufelle's version suits the character of Eponine better. She gives off more of a street urchin vibe. Lea sounds more like a Cosette.
@@rlam905 nope
She’s not the original eponine though
This is my favorite version of this song, hands down. Lea could sing the ingredients on the back of a cereal box and I'd still buy the album
Zandra Jones✨🥰🥰✨
🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I feel the same way about Morissette Amon. I listen to her sing all kinds of stuff that I have no interest in because she just has a gift with the way she adds personality and emotion to a song along with her amazing voice. Pretty cool that these two know and are supportive of each other. Typical Filipina way.
Lea Solonga is seen as the highest standard of control and technique for this song, she outclasses everyone by a mile.
Make that a hundred and I'll agree...
She way ahead of evetyone
she's the best Eponine in my opinion
HiRock Beats💜🎶🎶💜
No no no. She is not the best Eponine. She is Eponine..
@@jungkookarmy8922 Periodt.
@@jungkookarmy8922 PERIODT AND I CANT BELIEVE MS. LEA IS AN ARMY T^T
@@jungkookarmy8922 FR and army 💜
The epitome of Eponine. Truly the best. She was great back then and her technique got stronger now. She was the first of Asian descent to Play Eponine in an all Caucasian cast of Les Miserables that time and said in an interview that she wanted to nail every performances because she know that there would be someone in the audience who's waiting for her to messed up and would have say you shouldn't cast her. So there was so much pressure for her being the first actor of color to play that role... and she already won a Tony at that time.
She's NOT f Asian descent...she IS Asian!
Not a descent but a pure asian
I was blown away by the recording of Miss Saigon when it came out. So when I had the chance I grabbed tickets to see her in Les Miz. I was sitting in the cheep seats ‘partially obstructed’ when I saw her do this roll in London. I didn’t even care that I was leaning to see around a column. She broke my heart in the best possible way. And She’a been one of my favorite singers ever since.
Do you have any idea how envious I am of that?
I feel so jealous of you.
You’re on point on the “character choice” since this is a musical so she’s like talking, telling a story.
A Tycoon's son reacts.💜🎶🎶💜
Yes... She sings pop songs different... been listening to her since she was a teenager...
She's a self-admitted technical singer. This is the reason why she still sounds great after all these years. I love seeing the changes in her voice over the years. Her voice nowadays has more body than when she played Kim in Miss Saigon in London when she was 17. Another singing actor with an ageless voice is Liz Callaway, and fun fact - Liz played Ellen in the original Broadway cast of Miss Saigon starring Lea.
remdesivir💜🎶🎶💜
I love Liz Callaway and her sister Ann Hampton Callaway. One of my favorite cd's is their two woman show called Sibling Revelry, it's so much fun. Ann is amazingly talented with a huge vocal range.
She chose the mouth openings to portray the emotions. She has to show smiles while singing the first part coz she was happy imagining those moments
Lea is the undisputed queen of crystal clear diction! 😁🥰🎶
Hmmmmm
Lea was singing, feeling the song and acting it out at the same time. She truly is a very gifted, down to earth performer.
I fell in love with Lea many years ago (musically). I'm not one who sheds a tear very easily, to the point where many people think I am unable to, but when I watch Lea perform emotion driven pieces, like this one, the tears just flow. Sometimes, you just need those tears to remind yourself you are still alive. Thank you, Lea. I don't even know If I expressed what I wanted to, but this is the best I can write at this moment.
The reason she is pulling the "E" wide is because she is smiling while she is singing that particular vowel. So technically is a character choice. Also I love when she sings, "The river's just a river" she looked right at where the river would be and looked at it so angrily like the river had no right to just be a river.
Such an amazing performer!!!
Lea’s Eponine is (still probably) the standard of Eponines in Broadway.
DrIsshan's Free Time💜🎶🎶💜
This performance was one of the main reasons I decided to become a music major with an emphasis in voice. It was even my audition song. She is the only Eponine-unmatched
Have you seen the making/creation of Miss Saigon? So very interesting! Lea was the first Kim. She was amazing!!!!! ❤️
Alisha Grossman✨🥰🥰✨
She is the gold standard for this song if you ask me. The song is extremely emotionally charged. There's love, but she can't have it and the pain from that. Just one of the most incredible pieces and performances. Her little "I love him" is almost spoken, rather than sung, and it stands out so beautifully. Almost like the singing is in the characters head as she walks the streets of Paris at night in the fog and mist... and then softly out loud says "I love him" for no one but herself to hear.
Lea Salonga and Lara Fabian, even today at the 5t0 year old age range are two of the worlds best stage and theater performers. Their ability to convey the emotion of the song is unmatched
johnson paul✨🥰🥰✨
Totally agree with this
Her name is pronounced: LAY-uh. She started performing in musical theater in the Philippines at age 7 (one of the kids in KING AND I), played the title role in ANNIE at age 9, and I believe had her first album out at age 10. She had a sort of variety show on TV from age 12-14 with her younger brother Gerard (who is now a conductor). Was the original Kim in MISS SAIGON at age 18 in the West End production (won Olivier Award) and played the role on Broadway at age 20 (Theatre World Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Tony Award). First Asian woman to play Eponine on Broadway and did the role for the 10th Anniversary "Les Miserables: The Dream Cast in Concert" in London. Played Eponine in London and then briefly in US National Tour. She's a Disney princess twice over: singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan. She played Fantine in the Broadway revival of Les Miserable and played that part in the 25th Anniversary concert. There are many, many other credits, but those are the highlights. Fun fact: Ming-Na Wen did the speaking voice of Mulan while Lea Salonga was the singing voice. Ming-Na Wen was the first Asian-American to be a regular on a daytime soap opera - playing Lien Hughes on "As The World Turns" for about three years. Her character left the show in 1991 and Lea Salonga went into the soap opera to play that same role in 2001 for a short time. Another fun fact: the character of Lien Hughes was the child of an American GI conceived during the Vietnam War - one who the father wasn't aware of. Her character mentions how children like her are called "dust of life" (that description is in a song from MISS SAIGON). That character appeared on the soap opera in 1988, a year before MISS SAIGON premiered in London.
yeah i think we should let them be. that's how they pronounce ley yah. lee yah. they also pronounce Bea as Bee and not Bey yah.
Well someone's a big Lea Salonga fan😆 Thanks for taking the time to do this. U didn't have to but you did😁
@@DAT415 thats stupid lmao. If someone told you how their name is pronounced, you don't mispronounce it. Its a name, not a word.
@@labradude it's not. she wouldn't have known that. if you ever get to a place where they pronounce Bea differently as beyah instead of the letter B, Thea as theya instead of theeyah, and so on. you'll be the one whose gonna be called stupid. not everywhere in the world pronounces names the same way you do. think about that for a second will ya ;)
@@DAT415 Uh if it's a word then you can pronounce the way you pronounce it, but if it's a name then it's way more understandable. Lea Salonga once mentioned that one of her pet peeves is when people pronounce her name as "Lee-ya" and not "Leh-ya", it's a NAME not a WORD.
I actually got the chills from listening to your critique. And that was the 2nd time. Your passion exuding from every emotional response authenticates your absolute commitment to your profession. Like Lea, it’s a delight and privilege to hear an expert at work.
Theater coach Marc Daniel Patrick and Tara Simon (who seems to equate her performance to a perfect dessert! ... lol) both absolutely love her rendition. Her perfectly clear diction is amazing... plus you are so passionate about this! Thank you.

Oooh yeah, Ruthie Henshal was Fantine and she is ahmazing 😍
This is by far my most favorite reaction from a vocal coach. Very on point ♥️

It's hard to believe she also played the singing voice of both Princess Jasmine and Mulan for Disney. Her voice is incredible!
Saw her live two years ago and her voice is as balanced as ever, fantastic technique and such an eloquent and funny person! Love her 😍

sad but true😂😂😂

She has perfect pitch which is something you can't get even from the factories in China.
No one should ever try to sing like someone else. We all have unique voices. I love Lea Salonga too, she's fantastic, but there are singers just as good.
Love the detail. I've heard so many reviews of this performance. It's so iconic.
Couldn't agree more!
the other singer youve heard before lea were diffirent and slow as you said coz they were just singing but lea was telling the story while singing
shes a gem..a queen...an icon...a legend..thanks for featuring her😍

BTW, did anyone else even notice how Lea sang through the " N " in the last "...own". ? She didn't just chop it....she sang to the end of the word....". Nnnnn - a " THAT'S a glimpse of her mastery of technique! Absolutely beautiful!
Yes, she held the consonant to make it more emotional. It's a common technique in musical theater and jazz.
I love the way you react, it’s really professionally and brutally honest and straightforward 👍
I appreciate that!
I watched a lot of vocal coaches’ analyses of this piece and yours is by far the best and most detailed
You’re just too good, love love love your reactions. Never heard it explained like that before with Lea. Love you girl, hugs.

I read somewhere from somebody who was there it was a standing ovation
It was but she never broke character. I've seen others become so overwhelmed that they take a vow mid play. lol
The soft notes are everything in this performance
This was the version I grew up with. And for those sentimental reasons it’s my favorite. I love seeing the the break down, makes me so appreciate her.
When the 10th anniversary first aired on PBS many years ago, I cried when Lea Salonga sang this song and never get tired of seeing this high level performance. The 10th anniversary show was a great show overall. Great analysis!
Here's some of her achievement...she originated the lead role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon, first in the West End and then on Broadway,[3] winning the Olivier and Theatre World Awards, and becoming the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award.[4] Salonga is the first Filipino artist to sign with an international record label (Atlantic Records in 1993)...thank you for featuring the pride of Filipinos

@@SongsFromASuitcase oh, thank you so much! 💖
It’s amazing how Salonga is able to very successfully and appropriately transmit the emotions even if this is a scaled-down, concert version of the musical.
I love Les Miserables. I love Lea Salonga and her version of "On My Own". And I enjoyed your reaction and analysis of her performance. Not only was I entertained, I also learned a lot about the technical aspects of singing.
The way she pulls her mouth back is a character and portrayal thing, from what I get from the performance. Lea is such a professional you have to assume every nuance she does is intentional. She pulls her mouth back in the part of the song where she is smiling to herself while singing. All part of the performance.
Crystal clear and one the greatest story teller love it.☺
According to Lea herself, if she is performing in a theatre environment, she is constrained with the character, exuding her feelings on the song, whereas in the concert scene, she has more freedom to attack the piece her own way...
The immersion in the character and the emotions she gives are incomparable
She has mini concert in our high school. I was only 15 and she was 17. After that she made few songs with Puerto Rican boy band Menudo. Love her not only for her singing ability but her character ! ! !
Lea is absolutely an Amazing musician!!!
You should watch her audition for Miss Saigon when she was still 18 .
Wow, you're the 4th vocal react video I've seen on On My Own and I am at 1:50 blown away. You have great superb voice.
Thank you! 😊
This always gives me goosebumps. So beautiful
Musical stage play usually does this kind of singing thats why this is a "character choice" you are referring...and she is the best in singing musicals...
Thank you loved this , love your excitement! My fave version of this song I think x
Thank you. I've also done another performance from her of On My Own when she was older. ruclips.net/video/wQ5Cv_krcQY/видео.html
The 10th Anniversary Concert is just full of amazing performances, including this one for sure. I'm especially a fan of Philip Quast's version of Stars.
Best version, hands down! This is the version I grew up listening to, the version I learned it from, and none has ever matched up. That whole cast is just perfect! Would love to see them together live (though I have seen Colm Wilkinson live in the Edinburgh Playhouse, and he did THAT song, in THAT jacket . . . may have accidentally ripped me mum's eyebrow ring out when we were fangirling . . . she didn't are that much at the time haha). This is the exact performance that had me hooked on musical theatre. Nothing has topped Lea Salonga in this performance for me. It was like the first hit of heroin. I've been chasing that high ever since.

Interesting you think her technique is not what you would want, considering this is A masterclass of vocal greatness, no one comes close to this performance in musical theater
She's a once in a lifetime talent.
Still a queen until now. I bet no other people or singer could replace her. FILIPINO PRIDE right there
Her technique as Jasmine in Aladdin was very similar to this performance. For me it’s what makes her recognizable
And Mulan
Now thats what I call a reaction. Excellent-very informative
Thanks for this reaction... the arms crossed in front of her match the lyrics.. she can "feel his arms around me..." and they stay there through that part of the reverie. Then, as she breaks from what's in her mind, she opens her arms as the song moves into the more 'powerful' section of the song. It's a great acting choice that gives more depth to the song and speaks to the powerful realisation of what's really going on. Lea is absolutely brilliant, stunning and in this song, true perfection. Peace x
Love this performance! I watched it million times..

Ordinary or regular music enthusiasts are not particular about the how singers' mouth. As long as the sounds or musicality is great, it's great to us. I'm not sure if these vocal coaches can do better than the amazing singers we adore..
I would say that performing and teaching are too distinctly different skills. It is rare to find someone who is a great teacher and performer both. When does it need to be a superstar performer to be a fantastic teacher

I'm no singer but I do love your analysis of Lea's singing. Kudos!
Lea Salonga once said that she was the first woman in color to sing that 'On My Own', so she was kind of forced to do it perfectly. I think that's the reason why how she sings now is kind of different because she's doing it in her own style now.
This is the performance of "On My Own" which I judge all others by, and no one ever measures up.
Wow, this was really informative and understandable. ♡👍
Glad it was helpful!
Great analysis, as always!!!
Glad you enjoyed it
She was on Kid's the Voice in the Philippines as a coach. I could listen to her all day long.
She always sounds like a Disney princess
Since you're familiar with her, you ought to be familiar with her passion for enunciation as she sings, especially in a musical. It was the same when she became a star at 18 when cast as Kim in Miss Saigon. As a lover of musicals, I often find it hard to follow the words from the performers, even though their voices are wonderful. But with her, I never had to guess. Always clear, concise and crisp. I've seen her in recent years, and yes, she doesn't do that as much these days but in truth, she's not telling a story while singing other people's stuff. Going to see her again in June. Can't wait. Seeing her live and in person is a big of bucket list item for me as playing golf at Pebble Beach.
Best reaction I've ever seen

You're such a brilliant vocal coach - I wish Leah worked with you to improve her technique even more.
I think that's because that's the original. And from the royal Albert hall beautiful orchestra for the special occasion
Lea is one of the greatest voices ever!
Perfect, perfect, perfect and perfect
Truth be told, even with a cheat sheet, I do not believe you can sing like Lea. We watched her develop from the time she played the first Kim in Miss Saigon. Her Eponine may not have impressed you, as a voice coach, in the beginning; yet, for my whole family she drew us into the world of Eponine as a person. Very moving. The best Eponine for me personally. I think she surprised you as she went on to the songs completion. Closing your eyes helps too because you get drawn in to Eponine's feelings of unrequited love as Lea sings. Our girls loved listening to her this way, and of course loved Lea Salonga as the singing voice of Mulan and Princess Jasmine growing up. They are in their mid thirties now and still listen to Lea Salonga 😉
When I was about 5 or 6 my dad showed me this video of Lea. Her performance as Eponine was the first time I had ever seen someone who looked like do something like that. It was the first time I believed that I could dream big.
Thanks for breaking her performance down! Great video!
