I just realized that Gonzo's bathrobe is the same pattern as Arthur Dent's in the BBC TV version of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

Coincidentally Douglas Adams was a fan of the Muppets and knew Jim Henson.

"With what eyes do you cry!?" Is my new favorite existential wail!
Not her talking about Scream in the very same video and not knowing who David Arquette is 😂
Pepe the King Prawn is my absolute favorite. I can't put my finger on it, but his attitude is hilarious for some reason.
Because he was basically designed to appeal to people in the 90s
Puppeteer Bill Barretta based the character's voice and mannerisms on his wife's aunt, from Spain.
Pepe has the greatest line ever in one of the muppet Christmas specials and i quote " if you can help your friends and get back at your enemies isn't that what christmas is all about "
@@kimbettendorf3937 He’s one of my favorite post-Henson Muppets, along with Rosita.
Before you watch The Muppets (2011), I hope that you will watch some classic episodes of The Muppet Show that ran in the 70’s. Maybe the Steve Martin episode, the Lily Tomlin episode, or maybe even the Star Wars episode. Please and thank you.
John Denver! Josh Groban! David Tennant on Pigs In Space!💙
Lily Tomlin was not a guest on the Muppet show. But she was in a special they did called The Muppets go to the Movies with former guest star Dudley Moore. I understand the confusion being as it takes place in the muppet theater from the show and they’re putting on a show
Alice Cooper! Elton John! Prince!

Great idea! 💡
Reporter is Andie MacDowell. She was in "Groundhog Day".
And Green card.
Reacted 3 years ago.
She is superb in "Unstrung Heroes". That whole movie is great.
Four weddings ..
@@lucywillis4174 I think Ashleigh would enjoy 4 Weddings and a Funeral some day
"before you answer that you might want to ask the final destination of that finger" is the greatest line in all of Muppets
Pepe is the best, okaaaay?
The Muppets that you don't recognize, like Pepe, Clifford, and Bobo, were from the mid-90s ABC series, "Muppets Tonight."
Clifford debuted on The Jim Henson Hour.
All are fun, but Bobo is a favorite. I'm glad he's stuck around a bit. The tertiary characters like Annie Sue, The Newsman & Beauregard popping up are always a treat.
Yes! Also Johnny Fiama and Sal, and Dr. Van Neuter. I was a teenager when Muppets Tonight was on and I remember writing a letter to ABC begging them not to cancel it.
PEPE IS A FUCKING LEGEND. That is all.
And they had some great guest appearances...Prince and Garth Brooks were my favorites.
With what eyes do you weep? Shakespeare himself couldn't have said it better.
I was thinking it sounded like a Twilight Zone episode title.
😂
Who's that little guy in the sink? Only one of the best muppets ever, okay.
Bobo the Bear is such a huge puppet that Bill Barretta has to wear a back brace while puppeteering him.
He previously was the body suit performer for Earl on the Jim Henson animatronic sitcom _Dinosaurs_ . He worked at Sesame Place, where he first met Brian Henson, one of Jim Henson's sons.
Barretta also plays Pepe, and has been the current performer of Rowlf and the Swedish Chef since 1996 and Dr. Teeth since 2005.
I can't tell which question hurt worse: "Who's Ted Koppel?" or "Who's Dawson?"
I didn't know what Dawson's creek was as a kid when I saw this. Just knew Joshua Jackson from the mighty ducks films
We just have to accept the younger generations are so completely inundated with constant disposable news and entertainment these days that they aren't given the chance to learn a single bit of the history that came before them. Just the way it is.
@@MadisonCarter That's one of the things I appreciate about Ashleigh--instead of writing off older films, she's willing to give it a chance and learn something and find a new favorite in an older classic. That's why we keep watching!
Ashleigh not gotten round to jay and Bob strike back???
@@lucywillis4174 Oh she did watch that... she didn't under the Dawson' Creek joke in that either

Friendly heads-up; Pepe is a king prawn. And the pink muppet with the dreads is Clifford, a catfish. If you want to see more of him and the green mobster muppet, Johnny, you should check out Muppets Tonight. Lots of great celebrity guest stars.
@@darkangelofotaku2408 Muppets Tonight ain't on Disney+, though. It's gonna be hard to find the full show online.
Maggie Smith passed away today. Ashleigh should watch "Clash of the Titans" (1981).

Frell yeah!
I don't know what else Andie MacDowell has been in, but if Ashley has not seen Hudson Hawk yet, she NEEDS to see Hudson Hawk.
She needs to see the original King Kong, The Ten Commandments (1956), Ben-Hur (1959), Sorcerer (1977), the original Planet of the Apes from 1968 and The Warriors (1979).
Andie McDowell was in Michael with John Travolta.
Andie McDowell's best known for FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL and GROUNDHOG DAY
RIP, Ray Liotta, he has a cameo as the security guard in the movie.
He did cameos in this and on SpongeBob for his daughter because he knew she was a fan of both. R.I.P.
RIP Dame Maggie Smith. 😭
Please watch original Clash of the Titans (1981) with her in it
This is literally one of my favorite movies
Hulk Hogan is rocking his late 90's "Hollywood Hogan" persona. Two years earlier Hulk Hogan turned heel (bad guy) and become "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan and it completely revitalized his career.
The next two Muppet movies are the last two, and this was after Disney bought Jim Henson Productions. They're....okay.
When he was nWo 4 life.
And with David Arquette in the cast as well, this movie has the distinct honor of featuring, not one, but *TWO* former WCW Champions. 😄
Pepe is my new favorite, ok!
Ps. Emmet potter's jug-band Christmas! Tis a muppet movie...technically...save it for Christmas.
@@toddegoldberg she needs to also watch the blooper reels for Emmett Otter. They’re almost as good as the movie.
22:50 You're thinking of Independence Day, where Brent Spiner's doctor gets flung against the glass and the alien is talking through him?
This is the only Muppet movie in which the Muppets themselves aren't singing the songs. And Pepé is a recent addition from - I think - Muppets Tonight, while Clifford (originally performed by Kevin Clash (same guy who did Elmo on Sesame Street)) was first introduced in The Jim Henson Hour, which was a TV bomb. As for Edgar, he's played by Jeffery Tambor, probably better known for being the Mayor of Whoville in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the live-action movie, not the animated special or the Illumination film). And that grizzly bear Muppet? His name's Bobo. Also, 26:02 - Those two actors are from the show Dawson's Creek.
Bobo and Pepe were played by Bill Barretta.
I was already a grown-ass man when Dawson's Creek came out, and Ashleigh's too young to remember it.
I'm old.
@@yosefdemby8792 Yes, I know. I was answering Ashleigh's question about why Pepe wasn't in the previous Muppet movies.
That bit you thought was a parody of ALIEN, I believe is actually a parody of Independence Day.
My least favourite thing about The Great Muppet Caper is that it wasn't a direct sequel to The Muppet Movie. I was expecting the sequel to explore what happened after they signed the "Rich and Famous" contract.
The contract was to make TV shows (e.g. "The Muppet Show") and movies with singing and dancing and making people happy -- so making a movie called "The Great Muppet Caper" IS what happened after! 🙂
Someone back me up on telling Ashleigh to watch "Hudson Hawk" so she can see more Andie McDowell. Plus, it has a leading man she really likes that should be a surprise for her.
How about Multiplicity co-starring Michael Keaton?
Hudson Hawk is completely silly and a total waste of time. (Which I have wasted my time watching about a dozen times.)
@@NightRanger-lz6tp "she touched my peppy, Steve."

It's from M*A*S*H as well as one of the Marx Brothers' films
@@CorwinAlexander Good point. Spies Like Us would still be my suggestion. M*A*S*H never really clicked with me. Much preferred the show.
@RedKytten Ashleigh watched the movie M*A*S*H and it didn't click with her either. It's possible one had to be there, to grow up in the geopolitical environment surrounding it to get it. But I didn't care for the movie much either. The TV show toned down the mood a bit, then really picked up on story as it went along.
@@CorwinAlexander Yea, I am a kid from the 70's, so the show was always tuned more for my environment than the movie was.

Yes, we finally know what Gonzo is, and it's completely ignored for the rest of the franchise.
Those was also the last Muppet project Frank Oz worked on as he had been dissatisfied with how the Muppets were being handled since Jim's passing.
It was retconned. Joey Mazzarino and Dave Goelz said so.
Because the ending was changed by the director and the Muppeteers hated it. It was supposed to be that the aliens just made themselves look like Gonzo, but Gonzo's family is the Muppets.
"Canonically," this is "just a movie" and "didn't really happen".
Gonzo is a Whatever. By species and by gender.
Add on to that 'treated by Disney'
I say Do Clash of the Titans if you havent done it for Maggie Smith. Doing the HP movies is too easy
Not to mention she’s already seen all 8 Harry Potter movies on this channel in the past.
I LOVE this one, especially Pepe the King Prawn! He’s my fav! Very under-appreciated, okay?
Here's what co-writer Joey Mazzarino said:
"I wrote a very parody-heavy script. We parodied Men in Black, Contact, Alien, and we were very close to shooting. Then I got a panicked call from Henson saying that they were firing Randal. They said, "We don’t feel like he’s bringing enough vision." I said, "But we got the green light! We’re going!" So they flew me out to LA to pick a new director, and we picked a director who was a very nice guy, and he did a decent job, but he wanted to get rid of all the parody stuff. He wanted it to be more real, and the ending, I hate the ending. In my draft, the aliens were getting the signal of old Muppet Shows, and they made themselves look like Gonzo because he was the ultimate being to him. And then they peel back to reveal themselves to be these hideous creatures. And it’s not about family being those guys, his family is the Muppets. So he’s still a whatever, he’s not an alien in the end. So the fact that they made him an alien bugs the crap out of me. Anyway, they hired him, he wanted to make all these changes, and I just left."
Dav Goelz, as Gonzo, would later say that the whole story was "just a movie". He's no longer an alien.
I really like that original ending. So much more muppet-y
@@mikechmielewski386 Indeed.
That ending would be SO MUCH BETTER!!!
All the movies are just ‘movies’ as far as I’m concerned.
Films the muppets made themselves so none of them are technically ‘canon’ the way the shows are.
@@yosefdemby8792 Jim Henson died before this movie was even thought of. Unless you're referring to the Jim Henson company itself.

In honor to Maggie Smith (R.I.P.) you could watch some of her movies (2 oscar).

When you're ready... there is still The Muppets from 2011, and Muppets Most Wanted 2014. Both hit theaters with a splash, and brought them out of retirement so to speak because this movie didn't do so well... and it felt like people had forgot about them. Did you know that they used to have a Muppet Show from '76 - '81 with regular guest stars? They tried to bring it back later but again, not many of their projects worked out after this until the 2011 movie.
I mean not really, they say Gonzo is.different things in different movies. He’s still a “whatever” I think haha. Or a “weirdo”
That's true.
You know a great Muppets show for Jingle Beans: either “A Muppet Family Christmas” or “Mister Willowby’s Christmas Tree”. Sure they’re short, but they’re fantastically fun and wholesome. Gets me right in the cozy cues every time.
Interested in seeing what’s coming up for Hallo-Beans. I do hope Ashleigh will continue with the Friday the 13th franchise with Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984).
I’m not sure if she’s seen any of the Nightmare on Elm Street films; so I hope she sees these before seeing Freddy vs Jason (2003).
With the lighter type of scary movies, I hope she gets back to Abbott & Costello and checks out when met either The Mummy, The Invisible Man, or Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.
"The Muppets" (2011) is the next theatrical Muppet film, but I hope she does "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz". It's admittedly not one of the stronger Muppet projects, but I still think there's a lot to enjoy.
You might wanna consider the muppets series that was in 2012 for one season. It's somewhat similar to the office, and I love it.

Oddly enough, I cannot for the life of me like The Muppets, but the sequel Muppets Most Wanted was great and got 10x the laughs and feel.
The gang of Classic Muppets are all from "The Muppet Show" which ran from 1976 - 1981. Several of the characters had existed before that show, such as Kermit, and others, in various forms. But when The Muppet Show came together and ran for all those years, that core team of characters became a troupe, an ensemble. All the movies featured those "actors" as versions of themselves having adventures like "Muppet Caper" or "..Manhattan", or playing characters in classic stories like "Christmas Carol" or "Treasure Island."
In 1996, they launched a new TV show with the Muppets cast, called "Muppets Tonight," which lasted two seasons. This brought back most of the core characters from the original Muppet Show, and also introduced several new characters, such as Pepe the King Prawn, Clifford (the pink dude with the dreads), Johnny Fiama (the green Italian guy), Bobo The Bear (the life-size bear who was assisting the government alien-obsessed guy). Many of these new characters from "Muppets Tonight" then went on to appear in Muppet movies, such as this one. Pepe has proven extremely popular.
Muppets from space was the last Muppet movie to be released in the theater until the Muppets.
There has been several straight to DVD and one made for TV movie. I strongly suggest the following two.
A very merry Muppet Christmas.
This try to repair the damage from Muppets from Space by referring to Gonzo as a "whatever" again.
And then there's Muppet's Wizard of Oz which puts a new twist on the story of the Wizard of Oz.
I’m thrilled you finally know Gonzo’s origin story! 👍 I remember seeing this one in the theaters and being happy to know his background too. And every time you asked what he was while watching the previous movies I refrained from spoiling this one lol 😂

Girl, you need to get it together. You just watched a film full of legends and you didn't know any of them.....F. Murray Abraham, Rob Schneider, Ray Liotta, Tyler Bunch, Katie Holmes, Josh Jackson, FRANK FREAKIN' OZ (aka 'Yoda' from Star Wars)...etc.
You can't blame living under a rock in Tennessee. That's where I grew up and I know these actors.
Wow you didn't know "Dawson's Creek!" I'd have thought that almost any Millennial would have known that one. Well... maybe the "elder Millennials."
It's DEFINITELY an elder millennial thing. I was born in 91 and even I didn't get the reference when I first watched this movie as a kid. It wasn't until I got a little bit older. And even then, I've still never actually watched Dawson's Creek. I just know what it is.
Dawson's Creek was shot in Wilmington, NC. So was Muppets in Space at the same time. Happy coincidence they were added in.

I am SO HAPPY that you watched this one! I see so few reviews of it, and everyone that does rips it apart. I loved this one as a kid, even if I only saw it once or twice. I related a lot to Gonzo in this, and it’s soundtrack is indeed fun, so I’m really happy you enjoyed it so much. I hope you’ll be able to dabble a bit into more Muppet content soon. Looking forward to Hallo-Beans… I mean, I hate scary movies but reactions make them a bit easier to digest conceptually.
This definitely paid off because you kept asking "what is Gonzo?" in every movie. Well, now you know! And there's still more Muppet movies you can check out later on. "The Muppets" and "Muppets Most Wanted" will have a lot of people you'll recognize. I totally forgot that "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan was in this. That was such a brief moment in late 90s wrestling when Hogan turned heel, I can't believe they put it in a movie. He even name checked the nWo, lol.
After the Original Muppet Movie THIS is my favorite! Pepe is the best followed by the bear. They way they both use "okay" so differently live in my brain rent free forever. lol
At 22:53 that scene is from Independence dayfrom 1996 which you watched on July 4th 2022 which you gave it 5 stars
Who could possibly be mad at Ashleigh for singing along to movie sound tracks?!? For one thing, due to copyright stuff, you can almost never actually play the songs here on RUclips, so we're not gonna hear the original; not like she's over-singing something we wanna hear. Her singing actually allows us to know what the soundtrack IS! Plus, she has a great voice, obviously enjoys herself; what's not to like?? Ashleigh, you keep on singin' girl, 'cause you're great!
I AM VERY HAPPY TO TELL YOU THAT GONZO BEING AN ALIEN IS NOT CANON. It was only for this film and never done again like I said before regarding the Muppet films not being connected to each other as continuous.
The characters of Clifford, Pepe, Johnny and his monkey were created for the Muppet Series that came before this was released called Muppets Tonight.
I recommend watching The Muppet Show from the seventies before you watch the newer Muppet Films. It is five seasons and each episode is half an hour. You could zoom right through it in no time.
The man who plays Noah in Gonzo's dream was F. Murray Abraham who you saw as Saleiri in Amadeus.
Actually, Clifford was created for The Jim Henson Hour.
@@yosefdemby8792 Oh, I didn't know that. Thank you for the correction.
She should definitely watch the original series.
@@jamesmoyner7499 No problem.
