  • This was the first season in college football where a the AP Poll named a national champion after the bowl games. It might sound strange that they didn't do this forever, but the new poll made the bowl games even more exciting with higher stakes.

Very late comment, but it's great to hear Tom Osborne as an assistant at Nebraska, who along with Bob Devaney, developed the I-Option offense that would dominate College Football for the next 3+ decades. BTW, would you consider doing a video series on offensive formations that changed College Football forever, like the Notre Dame Box/Shift, Wing-T, Wishbone, Veer, Run & Shoot, etc. Also a formation that doesn't get enough Pub but has to be mentioned is the Blitz-T, which was a Shotgun-style pass offense co-developed by Howard Fletcher of Northern Illinois (then a College Division program) and a coach in the pro ranks that you all may have heard of named Tom Landry. Anyway, love your videos!

Michigan State was number one not because it was before the bowl but because the coaches looked at the talent and competition. Not at fan reaction to a bowl game

According to the AP writers' themselves, they chose not to vote after the bowl games in 1966 because No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 2 Michigan St. did not participate.

Even if that is so, it doesn't account for the decades of not having polls after bowl games when they were needed. 1950 is a good example as I went over that year too and how polls were done at Thanksgiving even though regular season games were still left to play. Thanks for watching!

Really appreciate these videos and your clear passion for the sport. I hope you don't get discouraged by lower view counts on certain vids because there will always be options and intrigue for a channel like this.

Thank you! These comments help me not feel discouraged. But thank you so much I'm working on more stuff coming out this month.

Nice review. A few things: 1. Duffy's last name was pronounced "Door-it-y"; 2. You never updated UCLA's final regular season record to 7-2-1. That's significant, because if they would have been 8-1-1, then beat Mich. St., they might have jumped Bama. 3. If Nebraska and Bama would have tied, Nebraska would have probably won the NC because they were they only remaining undefeated team, even with that final tie. BTW, I can remember watching that entire day with my Dad. I was 8 at the time and fell in love with college football. He ended the night very happy, being a Bama grad.

I didn't update because I believe I was showing their record after the final poll which was before the Rose Bowl.

I would love to see a video about the Southwestern Conference. Also the UCLA vs Tennessee game you mentioned definitely is why you don’t want to put the refs in the position to decide games no matter the reason. SEC refs have been a problem with bad calls in recent years. Also as a Texas Tech fan we definitely have been a very penalized team, we have recently been able to limit our penalties though with is good.

Thanks for watching, besides the old PCC which I did a video on, the SWC is my favorite old conference. So I might do something on the SWC but it will probably be a long one, lol. But thanks again

Arkansas was the true national champion in 1964. But it's another bama title they claim that they really didn't have a right to.

    • @WrongedSports

Yeah I believe I mentioned that, but I'm just going by the AP national champion not my own choice but I understand

An interesting topic could be Alabama from 1964-66. They won one national title because there was no post-bowl poll, (1964), won another because there was one (1965), yet had their best record in those years in 1966 (11-0) and finished third behind Notre Dame and Michigan State. Years like those would eventually result in post bowl polls and much later, playoffs. @@WrongedSports
