- In September 2021 I had the incredible honor of visiting the home of Dr. Eugene Blackstone, and giving a concert on the astonishing 137-rank, 7430-pipe, residence organ: the third largest in the world. This introductory video will give you a tour of the home and organ; and sets the scene for the concert I gave as part of an afternoon tea event. Read more about this amazing instrument here, as well as a link to the full playlist from this recital. (I was lucky enough to visit again this year, and another recital video-series is forthcoming!) www.blackstone...

The last great voicing work by the late John Hendriksen. He told me a lot about this instrument, and how he wanted me to come to Ohio and hear and play it. Unfortunately, he passed away before I could do it -- but hearing it here brought back wonderful memories of the times we spent together. (He was the final voicer of the organ I play at St. Paul's, Altus, Oklahoma ). I shall always be grateful for the chance to experience his magnificent talent and his wonderful friendship. I'm so happy his work lives on in this instrument.
Actually, John H. Hendriksen's final work is the 4 manual 80 rank pipe organ, his final 'Opus Magnum' which he completely voiced for me in Buffalo, NY. His last work installment over the course of our 23 year project took place in June of this year. Imagine him still voicing at the age of 91! Soon after returning to North Pembroke John became ill and he died on July 30, 2023. My instrument contains 70% recycled AE-S pipes, with new pipework from Tom Anderson and incorporates Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1244 as its antiphonal division. The Blackstone organ was John Hendriksen's second-last opus. Mine is definitely his very last. Peter Macander
Wow I really appreciate fine music. I can listen to some of this in my sleep, beautiful inspiring and living alone in the future. Thank you.
What an incredible organ and place! I'd definitely be thee for the afternoon tea :)
. . . I might just leave the odd cream cake for you to sample! Beats Hauptwerk any day!
It really is amazing and Dr. Blackstone is such a gracious host!
Awesome! It’s the perfect combination of beautiful architecture and organ! The pipes are works of art like sculptures, the view from the window, and your beautiful playing are truly amazing! What an enviable moment! Thanks for sharing! Jerry 👏👏👏
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
😊Beautiful @ Jerry Martin Organ Music 🎶 🎵..
Thank you so much Julian!!
I remember when this house was renovated to accommodate the additional pipes❤😂😂❤
Well, that really throws Hauptwerk out of the window. A beautiful sound, unique circumstances!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it! More to come from my trip up there!
Beautiful performance, and I’m grateful for you bringing this hidden gem of a composition to light!
Thank you so much!!
The whole setup is astonishing. The fact that it’s also located next to the beautiful lake is just the icing on the cake! Hopefully I’ll get to see it for myself some time
Really looking forward to hearing you play there, and of course a proper BiS recording!!!!
Nvm *see* it for yourself, you need to give a concert on it! It will be worth the drive up there. (please come next summer so I can also go to Cedar Point 🙂)
This building and the organ are looking really great and fitting perfectly together. Thanks for your video Jerry.
I appreciate it 😊 Thank you for dropping by
Wow, what an amazing installation. Lovely sounds (those strings!), gorgeous console, beautiful view ... plus afternoon tea facilities. A rather large slice of heaven, right there.
How about a sample of this organ so it can be played in private homes… oh wait… fascinating installation and perfectly voiced for the space. Brilliantly played piece too! You musical medics are quite an act to follow!
this is totalley awsome.
WOW!!!
What a magnificent house with breathtaking views, both inside and out! The organ is just awesome. In my dreams . . . ! ! !
And wonderful playing, Jerry: bravo!
Glad you enjoyed it! Such an amazing experience to play there - looking forward to sharing more!
what an absolutely amazing marriage between overall visual design (layout) and the instrument's superb voicing. if I hadn't seen this little video, I would have thought it was all part of a dream, but no, here it is before my very eyes and being played so beautifully, Jerry. what a great deserving venue (if possible) for part of a BiS tour. I'm sure, too, that Richard wouldn't mind, as I wouldn't, putting this beautiful work of art through its paces. Thank you Jerry.
Thank you so very much Trevor! I agree - it will be wonderful when we get our BiS USA tour organized!
I just posted on the Lang Sonata video, but thoroughly agree - this organ is an absolute gem. It sounds fantastic, and the organ console is stunning. I'd love to see more of this organ on BiS!
Whow!! How crazy and impressive in one! I think you are smiling all the time while sitting on this great instrument. Thanks for this great and very nice video!
Wow 🤩 that's impressive, the instrument, the beautiful space and the playing! 👍👍👍
Awesome building, i am totally impressed about the beauty of this place.
Thank you so much 😊
Such a very modest residence...
Very impressive indeed, Jerry. My dad owned a historic mansion in Portland, OR in which he built a 3 story enclosure that housed a 3/24 Wurlitzer theatre organ. It spoke into our 50 foot living room. Dad was an Oral Surgeon so actually an Engineer. He didn’t know how to play but loved the silent films from his youth. I, with my perfect pitch did the tuning and helped with the installation. In our neighborhood there were several homes with organs. Neighborhood was called Organ Hill. But none compared to the uniqueness of this home and organ. Fascinating!
Wow - thank you for sharing that story! Wonderful to hear!!!
Very impressive. I’m laughing at all of the “face diapers”
Yep, still at it. A doctor's residence, so.......
Wonderful. I didn’t know about this instrument. Thank you Jerry.
You're very welcome - thank you so much!
Fantastic video! I wonder about the effects of shifting sunlight on tuning- like Crystal/Christ Cathedral.
A definite challenge! But they do keep thermometers througout and a significant air-handling system to try and keep the temperature/humidity controlled!
Very, very nice!
I’ve had friends that have been there. Incredible!!!! 😊🎶😊
Thanks @OrganGuyPhil 😊 It is an amazing place!!!
Thank you @Jerry Martin for sharing this wonderful musical space.
You're very welcome - thanks for dropping by!
wow, it's a home :) Just read that the original version of the organ was built in 1988 in Vestavia Hills Alabama, then it was moved to the current location in 1997.
Tommy Anderson built , assembled and voiced the pipes for this work of art . One of Tommy's first pipe making projects after moving to the US is the auditorium organ. This is the result of unlimited funds. And I give Hendrickson an eh, for voicing what I am familiar with. Just got his nose in everyone business . But I'm not an expert.
Wow!!!
Famous instrument indeed
Thanks you😊
I have actually heard of this magnificent organ before and have seen some of the other videos available online. It's fun to now know someone who has performed there. What an experience! What was it like to play, tonally and acoustically? It's very dry, of course, but it still sounds warm.
It's an amazing experience - surrounded by sound - and so much opportunity to have dialog with parts of the instrument. The acoustic in there is almost 2 seconds - all special acoustic treatment throughout. Very special indeed!
Wow Jerry!! I thought that was going to be a Hauptwerk organ. I'm ever so slightly envious of the owner, or is it yours, in which case I purely jealous 🙂
It's such an amazing installation - a lifetime labour of love by Dr. Blackstone: more to come!
This house must be worth $25 million...
Well, this home organ might actually beat the Gummi… 😂😂😂
Someone has a lot of money!!!
