This cord is not necessary if you have a Garmin GPS which also can connect via bluetooth to the Garmin Drive app--that also connects to the Garmin Live Traffic information.
You are absolutely correct, but only select models of Garmins are compatible with the Bluetooth App link. Even if you have such a model of Garmin your phone must be On at all times while driving, you also must have an unlimited data plan, and if you reach a spot where they have no cellular coverage it will not give you any traffic data.
