I got goosebumps when he started talking about the Berlin Wall coming down. I was taught this history as a kid, but as an adult I comprehend it much better.
I’ve decided to watch his videos and the visual representation really helps me understand what was going on. As a kid, I remembered what happened but I didn’t comprehend the consequences of these events.
I remember watching the coverage on TV as a teenager. As an American of German descent, it brought happy tears and still does to thus day.
@@laurapeter3857how old are you now?
Yeah man, I'm from India.. and I've learned all this in school in textbooks.. never found them interesting or understood them properly.. watching it as an adult gives me chills..
Same here. You know what's really moving is the song "Wind of Change" by the (West German) rock group Scorpions. He literally wrote the lyrics in Moscow after performing at the Moscow Peace Festival in August of 1989, noticing the positive feelings that change and peace and an end to the cold war were on the horizon...they could just FEEL it. Sure enough, the Berlin Wall came down just 2 months later and the song became a virtual anthem for the entire change and hope that came with it. The Scorpions literally played the song for the 10 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. The video for the song represents much of this as well. It's abosutely moving. Few songs can give me those kind of goosebumps, but this one for sure makes the cut! I was also too young to fully comprehend all of it in 1989 (I was 13 or 14), but I could certainly grasp the tension between the USSR and the USA, and distinctly remember when the wall fell it was absolutely unbelievable!

There also have been some false alerts, detecting nuclear missles on both sides, when there were none. And they've pretty much had orders to immediatly strike counter attacks, if some missles came. And as you may notice, they just didn't.

The virgin stalin vs. The chad arkhipov
He was actually the highest ranking officer, a Commodore, who commanded the entire flotilla. That's why he also got a vote. Because while not the Captain, he did have a higher rank.
All the other subs only required two votes, that of the Captain and the Commissar.
Just imagine the odds that off all the Soviet subs it just happens to be to one that required a third vote. If Arkhipov had picked any other sub as his "flag ship", nuclear war would've happened.

2020: Dude, Uncool
welp, I want it too, and I know it'll come in about... 50 more years?
This enraged Oversimplified fans, who punished oversimplified severely.
So uncool
I thought it was it henry the 8th

A couple of fun facts about Vasili Arkhipov, the Soviet submarine officer. First, in regards to the incident mentioned in the video...Arkhipov was greatly concerned that his key would be taken from him by force, based on how motivated his captain was to launch nuclear missiles. So, he swallowed his key and told his captain that the only way to launch the missiles would be to cut him open. Second, a little over a year before that incident, Arkhipov was executive officer of the doomed K-19 when the famed accident involving its reactor happened. He, along with the rest of the crew, was irradiated as a result. Despite that, he outlived many of the K-19 crew, who died prematurely over the next couple of decades due to radiation exposure. I'd like to think that the Universe/God/whatever gave him some bonus years for saving the world.
Learning never ends,
so here you go, have some RANDOM comment trying to give you Fun Science-Times:
Veritasium is cool, but Hbomberguy is even better.
Practical Enginnering is also recommend-worthy,
just like Neil Red, It's ok to be smart, Oversimplified, CGP Grey, Tier Zoo, Kozmo, Sci Man Dan, Bob the Science Guy, Creaky Blinder.
And Legal Eagle and Cinema Therapy also are very educational, but these 2 are noteworthy for offering a very new viewpoint for old things.
@@slevinchannel7589 What about MinuteEarth?
@@ricardslisovskis2839 I aint familar with that one, but i love to get stuff recommended almost (but just almost) as much as i love recommending stuff to people!
@@slevinchannel7589 Thanks for the list! I would add Tom Scott, Computerphile/Numberphile and Robert Miles to the list, but CGPgrey is my firm favourite
@@chughes156 YEP!
Hi, APUSH student here. Your videos are incredibly creative, helpful and funny! They aid my love of history. Right now we are learning about the Vietnam War, and I would LOVE to see a min-war video on it if at all possible. Thanks!
15:56 “what could go wrong”
It did. It really went wrong.

"Where's the corruption"
"my first act as president is to pardon Nixon"
"Ah there it is"
This was amazing
This is why attempting to impeach Donald Trump was a bad idea. His VP, Mike Pence, probably would have taken over and got Trump off the hook.
And then there's Donald Trump who pardon a bunch of criminals at the end of his term.
This lore is crazy can't wait for you're next book
The part where the US gave Chad a sword and told it to fight Libya was so cute.
