People always love to talk about how stupid the Cold War was, but when you really understand history, you realize it wasn't so much stupid as inevitable. The two sides were just too terrified to actually fight each other, but also were driven by powerful ideals and political commitments that wouldn't allow them to just back off.
It really is sensical. You have very strong beliefs that you believe fully for good reason but you also don't want to kill a whole bunch of innocent people over it, regardless of which side they're on. Or in the case of Russia, you don't want to get overthrown by your own people or blown up.

Yeah, I mean, in my history class, we are at the Russian Revolution, and we had to do an esse(?) about Stalin/Lenin, and even if it was oversimplified ;), it helped me în what their intentions were.
UK: I'm sure I was taught all of this but the only thing I remeber from history lessons was America, Russia and the German wall. This video taught me a lot as to why wars that I knew of existed.
But later when soviet union desolved they reveal secret documents and there was saying those torpidoes were actually fake (Cuba Crisis) so if he had pressed the button it might not have declared a nuclear war more like an accident... (with a lot of damage)
There's one more guy that saved the world from nuclear holocaust. If you're interested google "the man who saved the world". There's even a movie/documentary that came out in 2014.
I think he deserves a little more than that for preventing nuclear annihilation of most of humanity. He should've won all Nobel peace prices for the next decade at the very least.
Oversimplified uploaded 2 videos at a time which meant many people stopped working for half an hour. This led to more economic downturn. Then they replayed the videos for their friends to watch. This led to more economic downturn. The people then realised how he got them addicted and didn't give them more. They protested and this led to more economic downturn.
Somehow you forgot to mention President Ronald Reagan and his fameous speech from the West Berlin side of the wall, in which he implored "Mr.Gorbachev, tear down this wall." It was a monumental speech at the time and impossible to forget.
