quite a few gotchas on z440 and they aren't really even worth it anymore either unfortunately but the ram is pretty cheap on z420 - hp refurb kit is value king generally speaking - shop around #chair desk #pool noodle
There is a part on the Z440 side panel lid (I don't know what it's called) that keeps me from using it to close the side panel and shield the PC's interior (I have an Asus Gtx 1060 with 6GB installed), so I was wondering if it's okay to remove it so I can't play on the computer with the motherboard and everything else exposed.
Have you ran into any issues installing the m.2 to pcie adapter in older computers? I tried installing one on an old gigabyte board and it would not recognize the drive...
So far I haven't had any issues. Maybe just by chance, because I know some older computers don't recognize them. There's also other potential issues, like the m.2 SSD itself. I know some of them don't play nice with certain computers. It may be possible to try the install on the m.2 drive on a different computer and then throw it into the one you want to run, to see if you can boot from it after Windows is already on the drive. Also sometimes updating the BIOS helps. Seems like a lot of factors with them so it's hard to say how, or even if, it might be possible.
since you work with a hp z440 workstation for editing just like me, the problem I faced with the cpu heat was the size of cpu fun. What I don't really understand how come they put a 90 mm fun to cool a 12 core xeon processor? this is foolish, it is needed at least a 120 mm fun to cool this thing but another problem occurred, the 6 pin fun is not compatible with all new 4 pin funs already in the market.
You're my new favorite. You crack me up! You get a like and sub for personality. I could care less if you know anything about computers. I just became a Z440 enthusiast and am doing all the upgrades and having a blast. Can't wait to watch all your stuff.
I have one. $240 au. E5 1620v3 16g k2200 ssd. Moving to a E5 2683 v3 + another 64g, nvme pcie and a gpu closer to 8g ddr5. Extra costs roughly CPU $70, ram $150, gpu $200, nvme 1 tb Samsung 980 series $200. Still a good buy comparative to today's machines. All that just to watch RUclips hahaha. Can upgrade, but can't use. Cheers from Sydney Australia.
Is there enough room between that front cover and case to fit a fan? I'm running a 140 fan it that orientation partially so the rgb is more visible but it still seems like a few of the prebuilt I've had apart have room there and you'd still have hdd caddy if you wanted them later
That is a good question, and a good idea as well. It is tight though, looks like a little over a half inch clearance in there. The front bezel has some plastic tabs that would have to be cut off which wouldn't be a big deal. But then it would still have to be a really thin fan, and possibly need to cut out some metal. With some dedication it looks like it could be possible, though a close call. Either way that definitely sounds like it would make a fun project!
Just come across your channel after buying me a Z440. I just love your no nonsense approach 😂😂. I'm lookin at the Nvidia quadro K5200 upgrade... from the K4200.. any idea if i will notice a visible difference ? and will i need the RAM fans installed. I'm thinking yes... but it would be great to know i'm not chucking more money away... Cheers 😊
😄 I appreciate that! I haven't used the k4200 to say how significant the difference would be, but the 5200 has been pretty solid for me in terms of editing video, which is what I mainly use it for. I would say it largely depends on what you plan to do. If you plan on doing some gaming, you might want to hold off for something a little better that is more geared in that direction. Even if gaming is not a concern, it might be a good idea to wait a bit and try to find a card that is more of a leap forward beyond 4200 to 5200. But again, that is entirely personal preference. The only time you would really need the RAM fan is if you are filling all 8 slots. And even then, it just throws a BIOS message that you can skip. I would be surprised if overheating is an issue with that specifically. If anything, you could probably drop another cheap case fan in there somewhere if absolutely necessary. Thank you for watching!
Hello friend, your channel is very good, what connector does the fan that you put in the middle front part occupy and where it connects, I want to put extra fans that are not HP.
I'm not totally sure on that one, haven't used the z620 before. I imagine the header would be the same, but I know the z440 fan sits in kind of a custom cage that locks into the case. Don't know if the 620 fan would be the same. Most likely, there is some way to make it happen, I've used double sided tape to stick fans in before 😄. Probably wouldn't recommend that though. Anyway, sorry I don't know for sure, I just haven't worked with that model.
@@LowcastleTech Thank you for responding. I'll try placing it in the case again and see how well it sits. It does have a cage/case it sits in so I'll see if its secure.
Great vid I would say it's FAN-tastic Har Har. Love your thinking outside the box or would that be inside the box, Ah hell whatever!!!! Go get-um Lowcastle.
Not yet. I tried taking it all the way down to a single 4GB stick of RAM though, and still had issues. So that made me think it's not memory related. But I will give that a shot, will try anything at this point. Need to test other components as well, it is really weird and unpredictable as far as when it happens, and what components I connect/disconnect or swap out. Part of me wonders if it is the power supply because it is one of the few consistent things when testing. Would make sense for the shutdowns/restarts but not so much for the freezes. The pool noodle was my go-to solution, the fact that it didn't work is really troubling.
@@LowcastleTech My favorite thing about these is being able to pick up a Xeon E5-2683 V4 (16c/32t) for something stupid like $25, if it is the CPU. Even more stupid is how I use mine to run a bunch of instances of Evercrack...
Does anyone know the pinouts for hp z440 18 pin connector? I just blew my psu and replacement psu costs like $200, yeah i know there are 24 pin to 18 pin adapters available but they are taking like 2 months to deliver and even then there is no surety it will not get lost in transit or something and this is my only pc i have so if anyone could provide me the pinout i can build a Frankenstein adapter to use in the meantime
Is the problem gone now? If not, did you change the paste on the north/south bridge chip as well? Maybe also change the thermal pads on the mosfets and set a fan towards it if needed.
It has been really weird to troubleshoot. Adding the cooling elements helped with the temp, but I'm starting to think the software I'm using just doesn't like something about the z440. I tried swapping out just about every component. Finally, just got fed up and moved the hard drive to a different z440 that I know has been working without issue. This caused the problem not to happen as much but I had one random restart while using the video editing program specifically. It could be that the hard drive itself is the problem, but I bought it new, and it wasn't flagged by any of the diagnostic checks. I have used the software on a different PC without issue, but for whatever reason it is the combo of that program and the z440 which seems to cause trouble. It is very strange. Anyway, I do appreciate the tips, if nothing else it is something to keep in mind for future builds/reference.
@@mealot7613 The RAM is ok, I took it down to a single stick and ran it, even swapped that out and ran with a different stick, same issue. I was also thinking it might be the PSU, but I put the hard drive into a completely different computer with all different components. Oddly enough I had the same issue, but not nearly as often. So it either has to be the hard drive, or just something with that specific program that crashes it out having some kind of conflict with the build. The hard drive was new though, and all checks are good, so I don't know. On the other hand, the software ran fine when I used it on a different model in the past. So, it has been driving me a little crazy trying to diagnose this one.
Have you looked at Windows 10 Crash Logs with Event Viewer? If the program has a problem it will show up there, it will also show problems with drivers for pc components etc. Go to configuration screen, open security and maintenance, and then under maintenance you can display the reliability and problem history. If its software related it should show up here.
Also if you are having crashes, you need to check the windows, system or app logs. Look for critical errors around the time the PC crashed, should get something specific about which component overheated or if it's just the app crashing then you can start googling the error codes
I did check previously but all I was getting was improper shutdown messages in the logs and couldn't find any detailed information about the cause. I will have to look into it more though, I just glanced over the critical errors and didn't really dive in or run any codes from the details tab. I've tried so much on the hardware side I'm almost wondering if the PC just doesn't like something about the program at this point, even though I've ran the same thing on a computer with way weaker specs. Going to have to do some more digging, or just slow down the rendering if it keeps it up... Or I could always just launch it off a cliff.... 😓😂
@@LowcastleTech also check the other codes before the unclean shutdown. Usually you will get BSOD, the PC will reboot with a bunch of messages of the startup, then a message of the prior shutdown not being clean
🙂 My thoughts exactly! So far it seems to have helped. But that being said, the freezing was super random before, which is part of what was making it difficult to diagnose.
