Thanks for the inspiration. I had a Thermaltake TR2 600W to fit in a Z220 (slightly different model). Ofc didn't fit. But if I place it on the most top position, there's one screw fitting to the fan gutter, which I can then put a big screw (VESA) and sits quite tight! I also put some double sided strong tape, just for additional hold. :)

    hi,
Thanks for the info. I have used your video as inspiration and came up with a variant. I have bought a Corsair 850 watt gold power supply. I have cut out a piece of aluminium plate and mounted it to the power supply as an extension of the horizontal gap and managed to screw a bolt and nut connecting the plate to the tower. Than I mounted a nut and bolt to an aluminium strip on the lowest left corner and fold it to connect to the power supply which I screwed in to the power supply.. The computer started up great so now I'm going to look for a decent 2080ti for video editing in DaVinci Resolve.

Tried those 3M command strips, and after a few days, they failed, and the power supply came off. Unfortunately, the massive temperature variation from the PC and the PSU itself, will do this. I'm going to try Gorilla Heavy Duty Mounting Tape next, to see if that fares any better.

Great work. I'm working on my adapter and replacement power supply. My question is about the pin that powers that memory section. It seems to be a normal eight pin. Will that work. Getting a Rosewill ARC 75 with 20+4 PIN Motherboard Connector x 1
    +12V EPS 4+4 PIN Connector x 1
    6+2 PIN PCI-E Connector x 4
    SATA Connector x 6
    4 PIN Molex Connector x 4
    4 PIN Floppy Connector x1
Hoping this will cover my needs.
**Update** This upgrade worked for me! Got a 750 watt power supply in my hp z420!! Thanks!!

Thanks for the video, it's been very helpful! I've never done any work on my pc so when I bought a GTX 1070ti graphics card for my z420 and realized it didn't work right off the bat this video has been a life saver! I do have a question I hope you can help with, I bought a corsair 750W PSU and I've gotten the adapter you mentioned in the link but it still won't turn on. I've done the paperclip test and the PSU fan does turn on when I turn on the power with just the paperclip, so I don't think it's the PSU. The adapter I got, though, had one of the cables loose - it's actually the 2nd adapter I've gotten and the 1st one had loose/free cables too. Do you think it's not working because of the faulty adapter cables or something else?
    Thank you very much!

Hey Luke, please try the following trouble shooting steps.
      1. Re-install the original HP Power Supply and graphics card to verify that the system is working properly (if this doesn't work, let us know)
      2. Install the new power supply and adapter cable with the original graphics card. (If this works we know that there is either an issue with the GTX 1070 Ti Graphics Card)
Let us know what happens after you try these 2 steps.

Guys it's clearly the 8pin that is pinned differently to the other power supply you used, you guys got lucky and picked a power supply that has the correct orientation on the pins. he's going to have to test the pin out with a meter, work out what pins are wrong and then move them about. de-pin a few pins and move their locations on the connector cable.@@GreenPCGamerscom

Velcro Strips of any kind are Unnecessary IF You are Patient and Clever enough to CAREFULLY Measure and Drill TWO Small Holes in the Back of the Case for some Standard 6-32 PSU Mounting Screws, Slightly widening the Bottom Left Mounting Hole on the Left Side to Match the location of a Standard Power Supply Mount in that Location, and then, WITHOUT BENDING ANY OF THE CASES PSU GUIDES, fabricating a simple straight, flat piece of metal (I used an old 6 in. x 1 in. Steel Zinc-Plated Mending Plate available from Home Depot for $2.14) with Two Holes Drilled and Tapped for 6-32 PSU Mounting Fasteners, with a small piece removed from the Top Middle to avoid the Cases PSU Guide there as a Filler for the GAP at the Top of a Corsair 850 Watt Fully Modular PSU - Worked like a Charm and VERY Secure and Level

Thank you for the video! I recently bought the 850 watt version of your PSU, and I am testing it with a Z420 with 8gb of ram, E5-2670, and a 1080ti. It turns on when there are no 6-pin connectors attached to the PSU (for me that means no cd drive or hard drive). However, once i plug in ANY 6 pin connector (regardless of whether its going to a GPU or SATA/CD/DVD), the fans briefly spin and then shut down- and Ive tried with several known working cables. Is this a mobo short issue?

After effects relies heavily on cpu for rendering. You should consider upgrading your processor to increase the performance.

Hey Guys, so I just purchased an MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming 6GB graphics card for my Z420. After i had already purchased that i found your video where you recommend i upgrade my power supply to atleast 650w. My question is if i install the card about a week or two before i upgrade my power supply would that be ok short term? or should i wait on the gpu install until after i have my new power supply in place? Thanks.

Hey JT7166, does the existing power supply have the correct power adapter cables for your MSI RTX 2060? If it does, you can temporarily use it until you get the upgraded power supply. Worse case scenario = you fry the stock power supply.

@@GreenPCGamerscom wow thanks for the quick reply. The card has an 8 pin connector and power supply 6. I bought an adapter to go with it, I'm hoping that will work. Wish I found your site/page before I started buying parts. I'm a noob when it comes to PC gaming and upgrading pcs

Absolutely, we had one community member swap the Z420 parts to atx chassis so he could utilize liquid cooling. Thanks for commenting!

I do not know if this would work in an ML160 G6.

I dont get it man, hp z420 comes with a 600w power supply and the gtx 1080ti's peak power is 300w why is the system unstable then?
and you only upgraded to a power supply which has 100w more, how does that solve your problem?

    • @GreenPCGamerscom
      @GreenPCGamerscom  5 лет назад +1

With in game testing we were having intermittent shut downs with the stock 600W Power Supply under heavy load. You are correct, the extra 100w and additional power rails solved that issue for us.

Found out the hard way these junk piles only support SLI from quadro cards and not GTX cards. They make decent budget gaming pcs, but you are limited to 1 video card due to poor design decisions by HP

Hey Steven, that's a bummer, but also understandable considering they only sold the Z420's new with NVIDIA Quadro or equivalent AMD GPU's. If you upgrade the power supply you can install 1 x high end RTX or GTX Graphics Card. Thanks for commenting!
