  • In this Michigan fishing video we are jigging for king salmon! We have both gone lake fishing for king salmon before but neither of us have ever gone vertical jigging for king salmon before so we made arrangements with Dustin Lehnert of Swift Waters Guide Service to go out on Pere Marquette Lake in North West Michigan and learn how to go jigging for king salmon! In this video I show you our salmon jigging set up as well as the salmon jigging lures we used that day and tips on the salmon jigging techniques that we used to have success while jigging for king salmon.
    This was our first attempt a king salmon fishing in 2021 and it was a treat to get the first king salmon of 2021 early in the season. Jigging for king salmon was just as much fun as we expected it to be and the fight of a fresh chrome king salmon is unlike anything we have experianced in the past. The Michigan salmon run in 2021 is expected to be a good one and the Kings are bigger than usual this year. A new state record king salmon was caught recently out of Lake Michigan and rumor has it the average size this year is big! Pere Marquette Lake salmon fishing seems almost to good to be true but the fish stage up in Pere Marquette Lake before making their run up the Pere Marquette River and this offers the opportunity to jig for king salmon in a smaller body of water where finding King Salmon is less of a needle in a haystack type of situation. Lake Michigan king salmon fishing can be great as well and some people go vertical jigging for king salmon on lake Michigan however most people are trolling on Lake Michigan. Trolling on Lake Michigan is effective but not nearly as fun as vertical jigging for king salmon. When a king salmon hits one of your salmon jigging lures the power is explosive and the battle is epic!
    If you want to see what salmon jigging lures we were using to jig for King Salmon make sure to stay tuned till the end of this Michigan king salmon fishing video! I love Michigan king salmon fishing but river fishing for king salmon is a whole other ball of wax. if you are interested in salmon jigging or more specifically salmon jigging Michigan lakes this is the fishing video for you.

    How far off the bottom do you jig? Just however high up you see them on sonar? And do you ever pound the bottom?

      @@aaronbuttignoli8710 I generally drop it to the bottom and then lift it a couple inches off the bottom and jig there. If you have a good fishfinder or live scope and you see them come in higher or low real up to where they are and jig there. If you’re fishing, just stay on the bottom. I like to occasionally sand and find that that can get their attention sometimes. They definitely can get keyEd in on a specific color so change colors frequently and until you start connecting with fish and your jigging periodically. They don’t always like the same presentation, but as a general rule, they are going to hit when it’s fluttering on the fall. You want to keep your line tight on the drop so that you can feel them grab it, but even if you don’t, when you go to jig the next time you’ll bury it in their mouth. I also generally find that real big jigging motions fast and hard tends to produce more than a smaller subtler jigging motion.

    Nice video! I've been jigging the last few weekends without any success. I will try moving more and hopefully, the temp drops in the lake.

      Yes I believe the fish move in and out of there the stage before running up the river so if you catch the ones that are staging before they go they are active feeders but a lot of them are just swimming around trying to figure out where they’re going and what they’re doing. Timing is just about everything I guess.

    Jeez tighten up the drag some more isn’t the fight part of the fun?

      @ReelMichiganAnglers  3 года назад +3

      It was incredibly tight but when they wanted to go they still could go. I’m a light drag kinda guy myself and people give me a hard time about that often but it hasn’t done me wrong as where heavy drag or reels with bad drag have cost me fish. Thanks for watching!

      @@ReelMichiganAnglers i live south near st joe when do you guys start jigging there ? Ive never jigged for them just troll but this looks so much more fun. Do you ever jig out in the main lake or just in the inlet ? Ive not heard of manny people doing it down here but we are not too far from you, I’m sure if it works there it would work here. Having the lake between the main lake and the river sure helps stack them up I’m sure. Ive walleye and pike fished there but never salmon
      Great video, sorry for all the questions, i love to learn new things

      @@Jaredeck365 Any rivermouth or lake near the mouth of a river should work as well as the peers and harbors. The season basically started last week and should go for another couple weeks before they all move into the river. Fishing should be hot over by you I’ve heard so much good things about the Saint Joe but I have yet to fish it.
