- Here is a preview of my Online Painting Lessons. You can visit www.timgagnon.com for more information and to sign up. Please email me at tim@timgagnon.com if you have any questions.
This preview shows a short demonstration on simple puffy clouds. The technique is to just use an opaque white paint and allow the background to show through in some areas to create shadows. A simple technique that can be mastered after a little practice.
Thanks for watching!
I have a feeling this isnt as easy as he makes it look....
It's exactly as easy as it looks.
For him anyway.
This tutorial is now 11 years old but I think the best one I’ve seen 👍🏼 thank you!
40 seconds in and it's a better cloud than I can paint in an hour -_-
THIS IS THE BEST TUTORIAL ABOUT CLOUDS, I HAVE EVER SEEN, THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH
Tim it would be nice if you replied to some of the comments sent to you, I would be very much interested to the question from Christopher Gilbert - what brush?, wet etc.. looking forward to your reply
tim why didn’t you reply to mariette?
Tim please reply to this
@@sinekae222 Yes, this is very frustrating. He also mentions using "Liquid White" in the video, so I'm wondering if it'a actually an oil painting lesson that is mislabeled, or if he's using a fluid acrylic of some kind. But I've never been able to achieve this effect, and the technique is very straight forward, so I'm convinced there is more to it, and he's leaving those critical points out of the video.
This is brilliant! I just haven’t been able to paint clouds. Please could you tell me what brush you used? Thank you 😊 Sharon x
can you show which type of brush you used , I think many time the type of brush is also important.
That's exactly what I'd like to know!
a harder and shorter one, i presume
Thanks!
on another video about painting clouds the guy said to use a filbert brush. He's the guy with a very southern accent, his brush was a bit bent because he said he didn't take care of it. He also used different brushes, like a 2 inch brush and just used the edge of the brush, Bob Ross uses the same size brush and also paints clouds that way, too.
a filbert brush would be good to use, also i bought a 1/4 inch brush recently that is rounded but expensive but great for painting clouds, i think try using different brushes like a fan brush, too. Remember these vids are ok for tips but afterwards everyone will find what works best for them, it's trial and error no matter what these people on these vids recommend.
I've painted for 10 years, and in this 10 years, I always have trouble with clouds. Really appreciate this!
O.o
That cloud is bad ass!!
I was watching and was like, "Awesome!!"
But then you kept going and going an woahI!!! I LOVE it!
EXCELLENT tutorial!!!!
thank you for sharing this!!!
The best clouds tutorial I've seen so far. Thank you.
In art I’m doing a nice ocean scene with some clouds, I’m thinking about adding a shark fin, but idk. This video helped me. Thank you!
So did you add shark fins?
Oh great.I know after this lesson that I wait for my paint to dry a little.e,and use less paint on my small brush.I can paint nice fluffy clouds now.thank you .
Thank you very much for this clearly explained technique, I thought it would be near impossible to paint clouds!
I might have a go... : )
I love this video, it is both inspiring and educational and if I can one day paint as beautifully as this then I will be fulfilled beyond words, thank you for a beautiful cloud!
So many people asking what brush the up loader is using takes me back to when I was learning photography (over 35 years ago eek!!) and everyone needed to know what aperture and shutter speed the photographer used to take a picture. Now that I am getting into painting its the brush size and is the paint wet. History repeating itself!! Maybe I'll stop painting because I don't know what brush is being used or watch loads more youtube videos....or maybe I'll take a general pointer from this video and go and try different brushes and wet and dry backgrounds and discover for myself - that sounds fun. Which takes me back to my photography where I actually only improved when I got out there and started taking lots of pictures and then I didn't even care what aperture/shutter speed another photographer used...most of the time I could pretty much guess correctly by the look of the photograph.
Thanks that was amazing
This is an excellent tutorial! Thank you for sharing your talent. Gifted artist and teacher!
Ok everyone, it turns out I had bought a cloud painting tutorial from Tim like five years ago, and forgot about it. I'm re-watching it now. It's not this exact video, but it's similar. So here's the deal: he uses hog bristle brushes, usually filberts or rounds, and he does use a mister bottle to keep the paint a little more workable, with four or five drops of a slow-dry medium in the water bottle.
Very nice and I think it needs a lot of patience.
I really like your clouds. I plan on signing up for your class. I'm new to acrylics and am wondering what brush you're using, a bristle type? And do you have extender in your paint?
Great tutorail, thank you. I'm getting back into painting after many years and this has really helped me remember some of the technique used for clouds. Thank you!! Please keep them coming... God Bless!!
Tim brother I use too pain till I was 15 , 16 years of age and I quit because I got busy with life ,now I m 41 I just saw couple of your videos. And inspired me to paint back again. I thank you from heart. I learn so much from your videos. Keep up the good work buddy. Lots of blessings.
I like the way the cloud was without adding all that white, but still very nice and thank you for taking the time to teach us. Good work!
Thank you very much. I love your tutorials... I love art and I'm taking my skills to the next level after your vids. You are simply amazing...
Gagnon. This is the best cloud tutorial I've ever seen $1,000,000 thanks.
Totally amazing!
It seems so easy. I'm going to try my first painting. I wonder what the result is gonna be. So far I only did pencil drawing :)
Thanks for sharing. It is really great! Good presentation and lesson for starters as well for those who struggle painting clouds.
THANK GOD !!! A painter that is simple, direct and walks you through it in such a manner that is totally understandble! After watching so many other tutorials on acrylics and especially "clouds" ... I got it with this guy! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are a jewel !
@sepohnekorb If i may answer that, you shouldnt. You want your acrylic paint as dry as possible (which the reason why he uses very less paint and spreads the ammount he has). You want the pigment white only, and you spread it only to make up for the extra water the pigment has in paint.
Me after first initial white layer: Wow! Amazing it looks like a cloud!Oh wait there more....
After second layer of white: Wow! Ever more like a cloud! Oh man...more?
Final layer: This guys is a genius! Its a cloud!!! O_O
Wow Tim, this is great. I am just overwhelmed with your generosity and teachers heart. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us beginners.
Thanks! I wasn't so sure on the painting of clouds. I'm a drawer, if you know what I mean.. I specialise in pencil drawings and now I'm trying out acrylic in different ways and this really, really has helped me! :)
HI, Can you verify what you mean by liquid white? I cant find it here in the UK, and I'm wondering if it is something like Gesso... Thanks for all the vids, great help...
@wcbombers21 Its nothing more then a white base coat with a stretcher. mix somne white with some water and washing up liquid till its thick milk looking and u will have the same..
I just painted my first cloud. It is far from where your cloud is but I am happy that I had the courage to start in the first place.
I enjoy the way you teach, perfect for the beginner. I also would like to know your brush size? Thank you.
Shavauna Ronan it is probably 6 no. but it depends from brand to brands
While I'm not intending to work with actual paint, this did wonders for my technique in Corel Painter. Thank you for the tutorial!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
umm, it really depends on the size and quality. u could buy cheap and low quality ones at the dollar store, or packs of them for crafts. but really, if u use them well, and only buy the ones u need, like a large, medium, and small brushes, instead of buying every single individual brush, it might just cost about 10 dollars. an thats not bad if u get a really good quality one made with horse hair.its kind of like buying a leather wallet intead of paper.
What I dont understand in this demonstration how come at the beginning when I do the circle and than continue with is brush and that the circle still white even if he goes in the circle whis is brush where is very white ... the white doesnt change,. Hope you undersand what I mean I am french ...I tried it but didnt work. Anyway
@Donu7M4st3r Those 12 people that are now 20 are jelous, you find that big time in the art world: but the thing is they are not able to take a good lesson along with critisim to become the best that they could have been or could be. That is how you learn. take care Muki
Actually - the "liquid white" Tim is referring to is Apple Barrel White acyrlic paint. I have purchased his lessons and this is the liquid white he recommends. If you google "Apple Barrel white paint" you will see the type I am referring to.
What kind of liquid white do you use here? Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question but I see a lot of different ones at the stores and don't know what each is for. Also, do you have to use liquid white for these clouds? Titanium white wouldn't work?
i'm also new... these can be easily found if you goto a book shop, or something like that.. the price did not matter really, just your likes, the more expensive ones holds longer and are more smooth(in my opinion..)
u have a pretty hand! hehee....but seriously...thanks for posting. it's exactly what i need. i'm very much an amateur painter and always have problems with clouds and they end up looking like off-white blobs.
This was the best video on how to paint clouds that I came across !👍🏾🎨❤👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 You are a super teacher !😃👍🏾
Thank you so much, I'm glad I could help. Thanks for your comment!
Amazing Cloud !!!..I need to try harder
Iv'e called every art store here in Los Angeles for 'liquid white'. and nobody seems to carry or even know what that is!!! So are you just taking a piss mate??
what is 'liquid white'. and who makes it?
Beautiful, but what kind of brush are you using. The brush is so important. This technique cannot be done with any brush.
I am a beginning painter. Tim's technique he shows here has let me paint the most satisfying clouds since I've started. I have searched the web, books and everything I could think of. But this lesson here has been the best for me. Thank you Tim so much for this. I'm really enjoying clouds now. I took up painting for stress relief. Now painting has given me some stress! But this has taken a lot of the stress out of it. What really nice clouds you can paint with this.
amazing that you've managed to hold top comment for a year!
@stuart8965756799 maybe you can buy drawing books :) but dont try to add oil on piece of paper.. lol.. (painting is basically use oil paint or acrylic)
sir, i just to ask, should i add a little amount of water to my acrylic paint? thanks... i like the way you paint the clouds :) thanks for this video..
Liquid White is from the Bob Ross collection, it's oil...grrrrrrr.
Yes that's what I was thinking hmmmm..
You can also get Liquid White for acrylics. :) Mine is by Bob Ross as well.
@@stephaniehebert8924 So maybe that's why I'm having trouble...I'm using Titanium White.
Hi Tim, thank you for this, can I ask is the background dry before paint the cloud?
@wcbombers21
Hmm maybe he means the white paint in a bottle which is more liquid-ish than the white you find in the acrylic tubes :-)
@PrisonerInMyOwnHell you'll get there :) practice practice practice!
what exactly is 'liquid white'. when I try this with acrylic paint, it dries too quickly to blend as you do. What am I doing wrong?
This is a wonderful video. However, I can’t make out what kind of brush you are using.
It works the first time I try. Thank you!
this video was WAY more helpful then my actual art teacher. thanks
so fucking long to paint a cloud! i paint much better in half of that time, even less!
Could you comment on the color and technique you used to paint the base of the canvas prior to the clouds?
Very good 👍example. What brush are you using
In the beginning did you use circular motion or just painted? Also, what type of white did you use?
what kind of brush were you using?
What paint are you using? Do you have any acrylic paint lessons and how much? Do we go to your website 🤔
@juriaan13 ...Thats what I figured but it just seemed that it was special lol.....Thanks!!
@alimahadtheman thanks a lot for answering my question sir. now i know what should I do.. :)
@PrisonerInMyOwnHell same here mate, and i m 19 . lol but do hope to imrove if possible lol
I have seen many clouds with very sharp edges, even from the windows of airplanes.
@Lisssy182 as u can see, it looks like he is a using a short, and round tipped brush.
Know what? A lesson involves teaching. That means using your words to explain what the hell you're doing.
at the start of this video you say 'liquid white' surely that is for oil painting not Acrylic?
I love this Tim!
I always learn so much from you.
Thanks for the AMAZING videos!!
What brush is used? A round brush? And why do you use liquid White instead of titanium white?
Am i the only one who see a man smiling in the clouds?
Thought it was just me..
Okay we are not tripping
are you using a filbert brush? or will other brush shapes work for this
When I paint a cloud, I end up with the pattern of the canvas at the edges...im really not keen on this look, how do I get rid of it with out going over and over the clouds again and again ? I have primed the canvas twice and was hoping the pattern would be smoothed out, but it hasn't really. I cajt see if you gave this as the camera is not close enough...is this normal? As I know a person viewing it would be much further away than I am when I'm painting. Thanks so much. Jenny...btw, I'm doing a moody sky's where the whole sky is many clouds all across, all blues blacks, greys..so my sky is almost completely covered...and what brush are you using please. You make it look so EASY!
If you use a misting bottle and lightly mist the canvas it'll make it smoother and not so chalky. That way it doesn't pick up the pattern of the canvas as much.
Is this video mis-labled? Liquid White is an oil medium. I hear people say you can get liquid white for acrylics, but I haven't really found any. I know Brenda Harris has one called White Blend, I believe, but that's now what he says he's using here.
@XxMorriganxX yeah this guy spent 10 mintues alone just on the clouds
The best I've seen. Straight forward, but realy effective. Thanks.
I've watched this one so many times I couldn't remember if I already commented 🙂 Excellent Tom, thanks!
liquid acryllic
hey man. liquid white is a liquid mostly used on oil paintings it lets you blend the colers together more easy it is vary hard to find in denmark to. trust me! but liquid white was used and develloped by bob ross and you can get it on his webside. :) hope it was helpfull
I just wanted to learn how to paint clouds. Who the fuck is bubz?
It depends on the type of brush you want, there are the Chinese type, round and easily broken, good for drawing lines. Fan brush, good for drawing grass, normal brush, good/medium in just about everything, especially the smaller ones. A set usually costs about 10 bucks i believe... but there are better ones, which costs more, you can buy a medium brush, and cut the hair to make it smalle, fitting to your use.
Does this technique work with acrylics?
And as far as this artist not answering everyone's questions....maybe he's too busy making artwork to be on youtube every five minutes. If that's the case,I applaud him!
+Lenee He sells online lessons or DVDs. Be thankful he gave free tip lesson. : )
I just rated as 5. I love it!
For crying outloud, what brush?
@derrick4508 You probably have too much paint on the brush :/
Thank you for teaching us. You are very good.
Speaking of Leanrdo Divinchy, that is what I would like to achieve one day but I'm to old to get there. Good goal though lol.
Try using "flow improver" .. Newton and Windsor do it 7 is available in most good art supply shops.. Hobby Craft stock it. . Hope this helps!! :)
@sugarstorm05 it's acrylic paint, not water colors. No water.
In the beginning did you use circular motion or just painted?
Best tutorial about clouds, you made it so simple but yet with quality
Thank you very much for watching and commenting!
Is this actually acrylics? I’ve tried this a few times with straight up acrylics and messing around with retarder to help slow down the drying process to mimic oils, and it just leaves fish eyes on the canvas. Straight up acrylics dry way to fast to spread the paint around like that. And I can’t find anything called liquid white in acrylics, just suggestions on how to make it. So far none of the concoctions have worked in making the paint behave this way. Any suggestions on what paint to get or how to make it would be hugely appreciated.
hiya
type in magic white acrylic paint,
shows you how to make it.
x
No she did dream tree, misty forest and a other painting with trees... but she mentioned gagnonstudio in each video. I guess this was the first video from him that they clicked on...
@HugsPlease If you have a wall with a smoother type of paint on it, it might be a little harder to get the effect, but it is possible. I've made clouds on my wall in my room :) You can use a large sponge to get the effect but keep it fairly dry with not so much paint. This way you can over lap and continue to go in areas that you want it to be really faded. The key thing is less paint for fading :) hope this helps you
