I am one of the people who have started collecting and fixing up vintage sewing machines. I actually just bought two different 99’s and it looks like neither one has been used in ages. I will be cleaning and “waking” them up. Thanks for your videos. I really enjoyed watching them. I’m with you in thinking that this is the way they used to do things. Play around and adapt.

Looking real good! The volume of all these pieces that comprise the three garments, makes me wonder how they traveled with them. Many steamer trunks, I guess.
Gorgeous work! 😍 “I am a jello person” You and me both. But jello can be quite fabulous. Have you ever seen a vintage jello cookbook? Both fabulous and frightening. I’ll take it.
Thank you Lauren! I have been served a savory jello (veggies and tuna in a clear jelly base) before, and as an only so-so reformed picky eater..it was a difficult time 🤣
Thank you Marie! I'm afraid I haven't seen it, and really I'm just not very into regency costumes for myself unfortunately. I don't like empire waisted things on myself, so that rules most of the early 1800's out for me eek!
I love this saga, I hate to see it end....but wait, I am sure there is another in the future, right? And you are no way a lazy person. Putting bias tape on raw edges that won't even be seen is not the work of a lazy person. What a weird style it was. Make it bigger, no bigger. NOT BIG ENOUGH. Didn't they knock things over whilst walking around a room? I mean, shoot, I knock stuff off racks with my purse in the store.
Thank you! More costumes in the future for sure! And I certainly wouldn't want to wear one in an antique shop, I'd be buying a lot of broken glassware 😅
So glad your videos wandered into my queue! Lovely, the yards of green silk are delicious! Looking forward to catching up on old content while you finish this one!
Such a beautiful set of garments! First crawling around on the floor; kneepads. I like the cheap grey molded foam ones with a piece of elastic and velcro to hold them on. I don't even notice I'm wearing them a lot of the time. They make so much difference in padding and also still allowing for a bit of slip so you can slide around the floor to move. You can slide around even easier if you get ones with hard plastic on the outside, but then they're heavier. I wish I'd gotten some much earlier in my life. Second bustl-i-er bustle: Add shorter double ruffles between the long ones to hold them up more. Gather a strip the same width or maybe a little wider than the previous ones in the middle instead of near the edge and sew it down between your rows of gathering stitches. The short ruffles will take full advantage of the stiffness of the fabric, without going over the point where it starts to "flop"
Thank you Ull! I'm afraid it wasn't my knees that hurt, but like my core and like...tendons in general? 😂 I just fall apart and ache a bit as a whole eek!
Ok. Love your intro!!! Love your beautiful makeup!!! You must be using 10-12 yds of that fantastic fabric ‼️‼️‼️💚💚💚. Love your videos!!! Totally amazing 💚💚💚
Beautiful work! I see a huge black bow in the back to give a stunning look to your project. Just a thought...again brava for such a beautiful project! You've gained a new fan!!!
I love that you use an old Singer 99K. I have started to learn to sew on my great grandma's hand-crank Singer 99 from 1938. When I first got hold of it I thought I would want to replace it but that machine is an absolute little star!
This skirt is very luxurious looking and I didn't realize that even though thick to sew the construction is quite simple your gown could almost be armour with that strong silk and it's beautiful
Wow! Wow! Wow! Gorgeous! And the overskirt doesn't look bad either 🥰 Wonder if horsehair braid looped on top of the bum pad would help with the bustle situation? Still looks good as it is. One day I hope to buy silk taffeta, but that might have to wait until I win Lotto 😊 Looking forward to the full reveal. This is an exciting project. When this panini is finally over, I reckon we'll be celebrating with lots of Balls, Fairs and as much fun and frolic that we can fit in. Stay safe and take care. Sending best wishes to you and yours from Down Under 💚🌹🇦🇺😎
That overskirt is fantastic. I can't see any color difference in the back portion so your method of combining the different dyelots works. Your ballgown bodice sounds wonderful can't wait to see it in the next video.
I think the extra pad makes a pretty well visible difference. Especially with the bustled up over skirt it gives a quite dramatic effect. Gorgeous work and presentation as always :)
Such glorious insecticidal beauty...this overskirt is magnificent....I can only dream about the fabulous embellishments that you have in store for the final ensemble...tremendous dream project and such a privilege to watch you make this amazing costume Bianca...🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸🕸
yesss, finally a new video about the cicada gown!! also just in time to calm me down before sleeping, i've found your videos to be very calming for me and i like to watch them to relax, because they're the perfect mix between kind of off topic talks (like your thoughts on traveling in the recent lemon dress video), pretty pictures, vintage goodness and sewing knowledge!
The green is easy on the eyes, once I learned to make my own bias and it is the only way anymore. Your Singer 99 is a workhorse. I have a Singer 99 in cabinet that belonged to my mother-in-law, she rarely used, once to make curtains and it is like showroom new! Cant wait to see the finale.
Forgive me if what i try to explain doesnt make sense. Like how the lobster tail has the two sides connected together to sit over the bum, and then the round part sits out, can you do a similar thing with the over skirt piece, to make the edges curl in and not show as much of the black underside? Gorgeous as always, and i shall also miss seeing this fabric.
I love how your videos probe my piano brain in unique ways. When you had the silk laid out on the carpet, all sectioned off and such, it became a visual for how when I am learning a new piece of music, I have to kind of do the same thing, sectioning off structural passages within the overall form, working out fingering, texture, planning it all. I'm not sure what the musical equivalent of a big bustle is, maybe more bums in the seats at concert halls? Also, those historic pictures you showed at the beginning somehow made me think of the French composer, Ernest Chausson, whose music I like and am now listening to (Concert for Violin, Piano & String Quartet op. 21.) Seriously, this turned out very well and I look forward to the top part in your next video.
I think the bustle pad adds a certain shelfness to your bustle, compared to the more gentle curve of the lobster tail by itself! I love this dress and it’s so beautiful. You are so totally right, though, that if you’re going to be extra might as well go all the way XDDD
Simply stunning a truely beautiful gown, I love it. I also love your definition of 'deceptively simple', I stand in awe of your skill, there is no way in this world that I would ever be able to do it - my head was spinning! I laughed about your cat scratch. When I had my wee Ginnie (named after Ms Weasley of course) my arms and hands were usually covered in them. I adopted her as a feral kitten and, although it took a while, we became the best of pals. I'm sure my work collegues thought I was self harming 'tho! xx
Bianca, you continue to outdo yourself! This is absolutely gorgeous. And I love what you've achieved with the floof in the back there. I bet when you add a few more ruffles it'll fit your taste and vision perfectly. I've really enjoyed watching your series and it's actually helped me solidify my own plans on my own wedding gown. I am significantly larger than you, but the beauty of this period is it's the silhouette that makes the garment look great, and anyone can achieve that at any shape or size with the assistance of padding! ^_^ I was so torn between an 18th or 19th century style gown, but your cicada dress is so gorgeous and some of your references have inspired me. My vision is still a fair bit different than yours, but thanks for the tutorial because it will help immensely.
@@TheClosetHistorian haha that's fun! I saw a recent image of an extant garment that had pockets in the bustle and, from 18th century, the panniers and I thought that was genius! Keep your silhouette but have your sandwich too!
Is there an age -- yes, yes there is. Contrary to what the Montessori school would have you believe, yes, there is. The cutting and wearing of the green is brilliant. Does this bustle make my but look furniture like? Why, yes, yes it does! Ah, the days when women were centaurs. I am loving this, by the way. I also like how you could gather up the sides of the chevroning into a low bow and create the lobster effect of 1876 and 1877. Can't wait for all the rest. Stay well.
I love and appreciate your commitment to a shelf bustle. I can see the difference, but they both look wonderful. Godspeed on having the shelf butt of your Victorian dreams. 😂
I like sewing just fine, but what really love is tinkering with and using vintage machines. People pay fortunes for new sewing machines when the best machines ever made are sitting in thrift shops. I got my best machine for literally 99 cents a pound from a scrap metal bin. They last forever, you can maintain them yourself, and they look so cool.
Hi Bianca!! I’ve really enjoyed this series, gonna miss it after next vlog.. This fabric color is just so mesmerizing, like you said ‘would love to have a vest made to wear’.... 💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
I love the chevron using the silk grain! What really helped my bustle create a shelf was changing the pattern to move the fullness up closer to the waist. Maybe you want it bigger overall though! Stunning nonetheless
Very clever solution to the differing shades, really leaning into the optical illusion of shifting grainlines. It adds to the magic of the whole ensemble. Just wondering, because I'm not up on the historical details, could you put padding of some sort beneath your lobster tail? Could it be that everything is getting weighed down as you add layers? I don't know. I'm sure you'll figure your rump out.
I’ve been wondering if you’ve heard of author Gail Carriger. First, because your bustle gown (could it be a transformation gown given the different bodices and skirts) reminds me of characters in her first series The Parasol Protectorate, but perhaps you’re a character from your own fiction. Second, because you’re also a writer, and she also dresses vintage. Of course I’m not sure what genre(s) you write, but Miss Carriger is very genre crossing/mixing: some historical steampunk, some contemporary, but all fantasy or sci-fi and mostly comedy (and all lgbtq+). As a reader I’ve learned a lot from her blogging her writing process, and of course enjoyed the world she’s created.
I love her Finishing School series!!!!! Such good writing and I love the characters. I haven’t been able to find the Parasol Protectorate at my library and I’m so mad about it
Alas though I do believe I have heard of the series before, I have never read any of them and am generally unfamiliar with the author. I did try to write a Victorian vampire novel myself once, but the plot wasn't working so after years of trying I gave up! I'll get back to it one day...
If you want a 90-degree *shelf* to enhance your *lobster* tail bustle, would that be a *continental shelf?* #MumJoke Seriously though, let me say that this is one complex and magificent piece (especially by today's low standards of fashion). I hope you can someday find a Ball worthy of it!
Wow!! This skirt is AMAZING!!!! This is the party (evening) skirt to go with that party (evening) top you will be making in the next video!! I think I like this one for the evening anyways lol 🥰🥰Love love love!!! Oh. Just make a smaller bum roll or double rolled bum pad to place under your ruffled pad. That should give you the "shelf" look you want!
That green is so beautiful I could cry
Same omg
"Arse-nal of bustle pads" That comment made me snort in my tea.
Every time there's a new part to the cicada project I fall in love with that green silk more and more!
I'm going to miss working with it for sure!
Your patterning skills are really shining through with that chevron! The sheer volume of fabric would be overwhelming.
I do love the result though. I like big bustles and I cannot lie.

@@TheClosetHistorian Hahaha. I love the idea of sewing as exercise!
Nice how you puzzled as much skirt as you could out of the fabric you had left. Quite a sport I like, too 🤩🤩

Thank you Penny! I wish my brain worked in musical ways, instead I could barely get by sight reading a bit in choir class back in my youth 😅
That is just stunning! The apron and bustle add so much drama I love it 😁
Thank you Brentt!
I think the bustle pad adds a certain shelfness to your bustle, compared to the more gentle curve of the lobster tail by itself! I love this dress and it’s so beautiful. You are so totally right, though, that if you’re going to be extra might as well go all the way XDDD
Thank you! I mean if you're going to have a silly cage tied to your back, it might as well be a giant one 😂
I'm sure my work collegues thought I was self harming 'tho! xx
Thank you! ❤ I lifted her off of my bathroom counter and she didn't appreciate it 😅
Oh my gosh, the basic stitches inside the dark trick is genius oh, definitely going to use that
Bianca, you continue to outdo yourself!
Thank you Darcie! ❤ Padding is magic indeed! I added two more pillows to my bustle pad after this even ha
@@TheClosetHistorian haha that's fun! I saw a recent image of an extant garment that had pockets in the bustle and, from 18th century, the panniers and I thought that was genius! Keep your silhouette but have your sandwich too!
Awesome as always!
Thank you!
for one brief moment i heard "bussy pad" and then couldn't unhear it. o_o
Stay well.
Thank you Michelle! I always dreaded "sit on the floor time" ever since grade school, as my legs fall asleep nearly instantly 😅
Yeeessss! I love it!
Lol I am also a jello human. Floor crafting is definitely out for me. I'm thinking I need one of those fold leaf tables.
Thank you Reina! I dread projects that are too big for the table 😅
I can't sew but still watching :D love your voice
Thank you! ❤
Very impressive! Do you also have a video of making a top?
I love and appreciate your commitment to a shelf bustle. I can see the difference, but they both look wonderful. Godspeed on having the shelf butt of your Victorian dreams. 😂
I want to rest a tea tray on the thing 🤣
I like sewing just fine, but what really love is tinkering with and using vintage machines. People pay fortunes for new sewing machines when the best machines ever made are sitting in thrift shops. I got my best machine for literally 99 cents a pound from a scrap metal bin. They last forever, you can maintain them yourself, and they look so cool.
Hi Bianca!! I’ve really enjoyed this series, gonna miss it after next vlog.. This fabric color is just so mesmerizing, like you said ‘would love to have a vest made to wear’....
💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
Thanks Deana! I'm going to miss this silk too 💚
I love this series, it inspires me so much in my sewing endeavours!
Thank you Jeffrey!
I love the chevron using the silk grain! What really helped my bustle create a shelf was changing the pattern to move the fullness up closer to the waist. Maybe you want it bigger overall though! Stunning nonetheless
Thank you! I ended up adding another two little pillows to it 😅
"Arse"enal? Snicker...I see what you did there. Cheeky! ;)
Wonderful! Can't wait to see it all!
Thank you Ela!
Thank you! You can indeed wear padding underneath the lobster as well, but I ended up just adding two more "pillows" to achieve a shelf-ier situation!
If you want a 90-degree *shelf* to enhance your *lobster* tail bustle, would that be a *continental shelf?* #MumJoke
Seriously though, let me say that this is one complex and magificent piece (especially by today's low standards of fashion). I hope you can someday find a Ball worthy of it!
Thank you! 💚 One day I will at least hold a Halloween party or two myself I hope!
Awesome video. I always wondered how they made that apron!
Kim🇨🇦
Thank you! I added two more pillows to the bustle ruffle ha 😅
I absolutely love this. So beautiful.
Thank you Debbie!
