I wish we were neighbors. Lathe work is mesmerizing. Being an artist, I often tire of the same medium. I have been wood working since I was 17, making my first gun cabinet then. Made a lot of nice things on the lathe. My very favorite was a 3" dia solid cherry rolling pin for my grandma and it is still being used to this day. Love your work and just subscribed. Keep on, keeping on.

Hi Tim, Just saw your video on turning winged burls. To find the balance point for large irregular chunks if you have a reasonably flat surface lay the wood on a dowel or rod. Role the rod back and forth until the wood balances, mark the edges of the blank then draw a straight line on the flat surface. Turn the blank about 90 degrees and repeat the process. Where the lines cross is the center of gravity. Great videos by the way. Love em.
Wow Tim you did a fabulous job with that burl! I have almost the same burl from Bad Dog and have been wanting to turn it but have been cautious about turning it. Now I can see the process and thank you. It did look like paw prints on the bottom-just gorgeous!

RUclips suggested me this video and I didn't know what it was by the thumbnail and i've never heard the english word woodturning. So I clicked to learn and I was so surprised about everything but especially your love for the wooed and your precious humor, and I felt the same as watching Chef Ramsay cook, if you do the same you will end up with a mess. It looks so easy. I am a rock climber and we develop a special love for the variety of rocks, colors, stripes, hardness and the feel of it and you expressed that same wonder for your piece of wood. The end result was really beautiful. Subscribed.

It was a privilege watching this video, at last, someone who actually knows what they are doing, nicely kept workshop and safe working practices, with the minor offence of gripping the edge of the bowl whilst drilling for screw clearance, A thick leather glove would have helped and balance on wood shavings or beanbag, cost in time to make, about half a trip to the hospital. What a beauty. I looked at BadDogBurls and that wood at about that size is out of my price range. I'd have to skip a house payment to get one of those. At least I get to see what someone else makes out of such a beautiful burl.
Hi Tim, I am so lucky that I live in Australia. Some of these bowls are too big or odd shapes, many times they are too big so I have to route them out, it takes a little longer but they always turn out beautiful just like your bowl. Kind regards Steve Sayers SJS Wood turning Australia
great video. I've made a few of these myself (I'm in Australia and they are easy to get). however, I don't take the rough outside off. I turn a base and then turn the inside. mages for a great, heavy bowl with that rough textured outside. One word of warning, when sanding and polishing be careful. I spent 14 months with a large splinter in my finger that in the end had to be surgically removed after slicing my finger on the sharp edge.

Hi Tim, At times you cannot get our burls on the lathes, what I do is make a flat bottom and route the bowl out the same shape as the burl, then you can keep all the bumps on the bottom which add to the character. Love the video's. Kind regards Steve SJS Wood turning Australia
Finding the center of gravity would be best for placement of initial center hole. To do this, somehow clip a string or fine wire to edge of wood and hang it up. Mark where wire apparently crosses middle of intended bowl as if the wire ran all the way down width of piece. Do this from at least two or three angles around piece. This should indicate the proper placement of center hole...Note: this is the very first use I've ever found of college Physics class. Hope it helps!!
