    Cool project Tim. I put out 6 bird house on my property several years ago. They all have 1.5 inch diameter holes. I don't get any birds wanting to move in, but every one of them has flying squirrels in the winter months when the leaves are off the trees. The flying squirrels love my bird houses.

      If you want chickadees, don't put a perch on the front. The perch encourages sparrows and the chickadees don't need it.
      I'm going through turn one if these. Great idea and great work.

    Good project for inexperienced turners like me. Several tips I didn't think of like choice of glue, entry hole size and lose the perch. I made a birdhouse from flat boards but no occupants, I suspect the hole size is too large. I'll try a new one like this. Thanks for the info Tim.

    Nice looking birdhouse. But, for the record, it's not always a good idea to fit a perch. The small birds that are likely to use a small birdhouse don't need a perch and it makes it easier for larger predatory birds to gain access to steal the eggs.

    I would have never thought to put in a drain hole! Great tip. This project is on my to do list. My only question concerns cleaning out the inside after a season of birds living in it. Would having some way to take off the top to clean it out be a feature to add?

  • @anaphylaxis2548
    @anaphylaxis2548 2 года назад

    That’s cute! If it’s for actual birds a perch might not be the greatest idea because it might allow predators to have a place to climb to get inside at the babies.

    Tim, Regarding brittle CA. Have you looked into the No VOC Foam Safe CA such as BSI Super_Gold+. I tried it because of the VOC issue, and found that I liked the fact that it is somewhat flexible when finished. I use it to glue pen tubes into my pen blanks, and other quick jobs when I have a concern about its durability. I have been impressed so far (or it's all in my head) :)
    Downside is it is more expensive that traditional CA.

    Tim Great videos, you are one of few woodworkers out there that use the blade guard on the bandsaw properly. I see so many people that have 6 or 8 inches of the blade exposed above the work. I cringe every time I see that. Keep the great videos coming.

      We actually cut the perch off a few weeks later. We saw a bluejay grab a chick out of another bird house that had a perch. I used to like bluejays...I agree about cleaning it out. I have to use a hook tool to get the material out. Kind of messy.

      @@woodturningwithtimyoder Thanks for reading my post .We have seen this with some of our old birdhouses now all have perches removed. Hard to tell buyers why the perches are no longer when you see them being sold with all the time.I'm working on one now like yours and trying to come up with a cleanout.

    Hi Tim, very nice video and bird house. I've made several bird houses in the past but I have t made one on the lathe yet. I just started turning last January and still learning. It's been rather fun but I do have issues with end grain tear outs. Do you have a video that explains in more detail about how to prevent this and how to best use the tools? Thanks and you just earned another subscriber.

    Love the birdhouse. One thing I found interesting in this video... You referred to yourself as a woodturner, not a woodworker. An interesting distinction, as I thought woodturners were woodworkers. I am a woodworker who makes clocks, furniture, turned bowls, pens, etc... I'm curious as to why you differentiate the way you do.

    I know this video is 3 years old, but I have a question regarding the design. Are the inner dimensions perhaps a bit too deep? That is, if baby birds are born inside, are you sure they are able to climb up the curved slope wall of the birdhouse in order to get out and learn how to fly? It seems quite steep for a baby bird.

    • @RonFarberNewman

    Hi Tim, really enjoy your show. What is your opinion on the sanding tool you used in this episode versus a friction bowl sander (that isn't powered by anything but the piece spinning on the lathe) or even a flapping sanding disc (which may be too aggressive for what you're trying to achieve)?

    Mr. Tim Yoder, I have the greatest respect for you, I saw you make beautiful pieces and I always admired you for everything, even your sense of humor, but to my incredulous surprise you made a mistake that I never expected of you, ... and at 14:10 something happens and I knew it would happen, the worm screw was stuck in the chuck but not pulled out, it was not the tool nor The aggressiveness of the cut that caused the problem, ... with all due respect I say, I did not want it to happen but I expected it, all the best from amateur, ...

    • @duallygsd
      @duallygsd 7 лет назад +2

      Good catch Paulo! I had just gotten the chuck a few weeks before (this video is over 3 years old) and had not had the worm screw slip before. At the time I just thought it came loose but you are right. I had not pulled the worm screw forward before tightening. Since then I try to point out that little trick when I use the worm screw.

      The standard bed starts around $6,700. But it goes up from there if you want to add on extra things like 3 horsepower motor, tilt away tailstock... things like that. I must admit every time I go out to the shop I smile when I see that lathe sitting there. It is a wonderful machine.
