Black cat peanut butter can never do you harm =D 5. Whippy Bar - Yes, we also call it "Marshmallow" I have no idea why the packaging states that =/ 6. Iron Brew - Not even I know how to describe that taste =/ 14. Forest fruit nut chocolate wada wada wada - Have the Cadbury's, it is MUCH better ={ 15. Biltong - IT IS NOT JERKY 16. Cadbury Cookie chocolate - HOW DO I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS!!!!! 17. Ginger beer flavoured Mints - HEY???? I didn't know that =/ 18. Peri Peri Peanuts - We know Peri Peri here as "F**K hot" chili from Durbz =P 19. Romany Creams - The biscuit your parents could "never afford" yet they always had 20. Sparberry - Nothing to do with Spar (Holland Supermarket franchise!) Just an excellent hangover cure! 21. Stoney - Hate it, won't touch it, never will like it!! Unless I am hungover and I need something to drink =P LOVED the video guys!!! As a proud Saffa (South African) I really applaud you for being positive and trying of this beautiful land =D But maybe next time, try our ACTUAL food ;) Not shop bought snacks =P
+James very well put. I laughed at the SPAR comment and relating that to a coke brand. But really apart from biltong as you pointed out the rest is just manufactured stuff you could almost get anywhere in a similar form
Samuel & Audrey Apart from authentic, you also made a pretty good selection. We also have our fair share of poor quality sweets here in South Africa and you didn't seem to select any. The only notable omission from your selection, as others have mentioned, was the Tempo. You definitely need to put that on your list for next time you visit.
I'd love to see a video compilation of who you guys stayed with and what travel companies you used on a map tour kind of thing...like from beginning to end. That would really be informative and helpful to other travelers!
Hey, love your video. Just wanted to enlighten you when it comes to flavors. I'm from Namibia, Northern neighbors of South Africa and our snacks are pretty much the same. When we say something is spicy, it doesn't necessarily mean it's hot, just rich in flavor. Hot or as you put it "spicy" is usually chilly flavor or just "hot". Hope you enjoyed your stay in SA.
Its so strange seeing things you eat often being tasted for the first time, I like how positive this is, although there is one major mistake, you didn't try a tempo bar
Sparletta must be named after the store where we bought it, Spar :) ha ha ha ha ha... I wonder if spar knows they have their own brand of drinks ha ha ha ha
You guys should tried ghost pops... I Really missed those when I was abroad... They stopped making them for a long while... Spicy tomatoe flavoured puffy crisps.. They used to be ghost shaped... Now They are just puffy.. Will try get a photo for you...
This is the best video I have found on South African snacks. Just taste and review the snacks very straight forward and not being clown or silly like other videos. I live in NY and my fiancée lives in Pretoria and I have tried some SA snacks but still need to try some other ones. I can’t wait for this Covid travel ban lifts so I can travel and check SA. Thanks for video
Finally, a video about SA snacks that actually use all SA snacks. Good Job guys. I hope you enjoyed our snacks. Samuel you should have tried and ask a older Afrikaans lady for traditional ginger beer. It's CRAZY STRONG.
Anyone who wants to try awesome South African food try the below mentioned: 1) Koeksister - Syrup coated plat wrapped doughnut 2) Vetkoek - Deep fried dough bread (Best with mince) 3) Bunnychow - Hollowed out half loaf of bread filled with curry mince 4) Boerewors - Very thick sausage (Beef and pork sausage mixed with spices) 4) Droëwors - coriander-seed spiced boerewors that has been dried. 5) Anchovette - Anchovies fish paste (best with toast) 6) Rusks - Large sweet crunchy crackers (best with tea or coffee) 7) Pap - Softly grounded maize (Once cooked its almost like thick dumplings of bread best served with gravy and meat side serving) 8) Biltong - as per the video. Dried meat that is spiced. The posters of the video only tried some of our snack and sweets. The above mentioned some of the best food we have to offer.
No problem, if you guys ever come through to South Africa again you need to try my list out. Cause our sweets are nice but if you truly want to experience our food you need to try them out. How was experience down here in SA? Where you in Cape Town?
Oh my gosh! Talk about a trip down memory lane! haha! I've eaten way too many of every single item you guys ate in my lifetime! haha. I'm vegan now so that won't happen again! lol!
Really enjoyed this show, fun seeing our food being tried out. Next time though Romary Creams and eat-sum-mors with coffee, you'll each eat a box full. Also with coffee try the Ouma condense milk butterscotch rusks, it's awesome. And one of our best dishes try ox tail "potjiekos" with stamp not rice.
I might be mistaken, but I think a "now" is a mars bar our version is the Bar-one. do you live in wilderness now? right around the corner from me. good spot to choose
akkiesedge Oh, that would make sense. Unfortunately, we were just visiting for a few days. Wilderness was one of our favorite spots in all of South Africa though :)
Piri-piri (peri peri) is just A spice, not a spice mix, it's a type of very spicy chili used in Portuguese cuisine that became popular and traditional in some African countries.
That Black Cat peanut snack is originally Indian here it is known as Chikki, it comes in variations of peanuts or Sesame seeds or Coconut etc etc .....
Lol, I can't believe I enjoyed watching other people just eat snacks. Since I left South Africa, I noticed how different snacks are. Should have had cream soda. It's definitely a favourite.
Yay I was hoping you would do a taste test, you need to try flings or corn curls and ouma's rusks with tea or coffee and a P.S chocolate bar, looks like u both are having a great time, what places are you travelling to.
Not from South Africa but know the best place in London England to pick up great South African food and drink as I fell in love with the country in 2014 and had to find a store back here in the U.K. Normal list for me 300 grams of biltong 100 grams of Droëwors and a bottle of cream soda
ive watched Ausie and US people tasting our treats, ive never seen a reaction like yours. Thank you guys it gets a bit personal when people do not like what I grew up to. All of those are awesome. They always say our treats are a bit to hard not considering that those things have been on transport for a couple of weeks. Yey Canadian People!
A little long, so I had to watch it in segments. But very enjoyable nonetheless. You both do a very good job at describing the snacks. Now I have a question for Sam... is ginger beer like ginger ale? Of course I've heard of root beer, but never root ale, so I'm wondering about it.
20alphabet Ha! I know what you mean. I'm still working on the transcript, in segments of course ;) It's quite a bit more potent than Ginger Ale. It actually burns a bit when you swallow. If you do like Ginger Ale I'd recommend trying it.
20alphabet Ha! I know what you mean. I'm still working on the transcript, in segments of course ;) It's quite a bit more potent than Ginger Ale. It actually burns a bit when you swallow. If you do like Ginger Ale I'd recommend trying it.
Peri-peri is a type of chili pepper, not a specific spice blend. So depending on how much they put in, it can be mild to really hot ... you got lucky :)
Where in SA did you stay? Sparletta is not made by Spar :) Next time, try the pink marvelous creations bar. It has pink popping candy that pops in your mouth, not sure if you have something like that in America. Nice video :)
Well Done! As an South African I'd say y'all did a great job presenting our Unique Treats. Not sure if you've had Milktart or Koeksister but if not make sure you do next time you here.
There are about 5 different flavours in the Cadbury range. They are about 5 years old give or take. My favourite one has tio be the one with the jellybean's in it. They are scrumptious just like the gorgeous Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in the video. Some interesting snacks.
Paul Lunn Thanks for letting us know about that! Since returning to Canada we've noticed these here as well. They seriously are scrumptious! Overall, we quite enjoyed the snacks in South Africa and had ample chances to sample them on long bus rides.
First time seeing this channel, no idea who you guys are but man for some reason the guy(Samuel i'm guessing) just has such a weirdly relaxing voice :| and I love how Audrey opens these packets with such perfection xD. Awesome video guys, next time you guys are in SA you should have a Braai! You guys are great.
Samuel & Audrey Just a quick clarification, the Now bar is a variation on the Mars bar, but made by Beacon in South Africa. In my opinion it doesn't match up to the Mars bar. I think the chocolate of the Now bar has a higher fat content and the bar as a whole is harder. Bar One is also a variation on the Mars bar, but made by Nestlé in South Africa. In my opinion it compares well to the Mars bar, although they are not exactly the same. I think the Bar One has more caramel and is sweeter, while the Mars has more nougat. I may be a little inaccurate in terms of taste and composition, as I haven't had any of these in at least six months, but essentially they are similar products made by different manufacturers.
Jou Mase You're totally right JM :) Once my partner made me do a blind taste test as we were fighting about whether they tasted the same or similar. I said similar, he said the same. We did the test and I nailed it! So simiarl but def not the same :)

Yaaaasss at the Diddle Daddle and Romany Creams! Spar-Letta and Spar are unrelated brands by the way :)
Next time you guys should definitely try Bar one and Tempo chocolate, Fritos chips, "koeksisters" (don't know how to explain them) and last but not least, Ostrich chili bites. It's biltong like you had but chili flavor and tastes a bit better than Kudu. Also if you're ever in SA again, order an Amarula dom pedro from any restaurant, it's to die for!
sparletta and the super market Spar are not related lol, next time try Creme soda. I enjoyed watching your video, mainly because I'm in ur continent and missing everything you have just shown. we happy you enjoyed 😁
I'm getting hungry! I live in SA so it's nice to see what people think of our food. I find it weird that they aren't as easily available overseas as they are here.

+James Sooo waar

Ah, that makes sense now. Our mistake.
I live in South Africa, and I still LOVED this video! Well done guys!
Tawanda Nhundu Thank you very much! We had such a great time visiting your country. We hope to return again someday.
Thank you so much for visiting our beautiful country. You should have had some koeksisters while you were here, but maybe next time.
Thank you! Hope we can do that next time. You're right about it being beautiful :)
You guys did a great job at picking out the authentic treats!
Vegan What Now Thank you! We kind of just guessed and grabbed stuff from the aisles...haha
I do not know how they managed to get a chocolate log in such mint condition...
+Matty Bhoy any one I've ever eaten is smashed beyond recognition
You know how i know its 5 o'clock....
The hadedas....
Nik Naks is the crack of the chips family.
Grrrr....Maritz Hahahah...good way of putting it ;)
I'd love to see a video compilation of who you guys stayed with and what travel companies you used on a map tour kind of thing...like from beginning to end. That would really be informative and helpful to other travelers!
Vegan What Now Thanks! That's a great idea. I think Audrey is going to do that on her blog ThatBackpacker dot com :)

Hope you had "koeksisters" while you were here.. 😊
Sjimone Hawley Thank you! Oh, we didn't get to try that. Next time for sure.

+Cheyenne du Plooy mm proud SAfrican here and I cannot handle iron brew. husband loves the stuff
+Abi Mollentze Guess you must be a Bru to enjoy the Brew, my wife is not a fan either
@@ch3y3nn309 Not a bru and I love Iron Brew!
Its so strange seeing things you eat often being tasted for the first time, I like how positive this is, although there is one major mistake, you didn't try a tempo bar
Ummm😂 here in South Africa we ALSO call it "marshmallow" 😂😉
Oh, thanks for letting us know :)
Proud South African ! These snacks are so normal ...I'm hungry now

You guys should definitely try Koeksisters. They are a kind of dough that is plaited and then absolutely, completely drenched in syrup... Soooo Good!

I am a South African living abroad. Watching this makes my mouth water!!! I want some!!
+TheStin777 Thanks! Wish we could send you some.
it is called Marshmallow in South Africa too
lol spar and spar letta are not the same xD
As a general rule of thumb if some cookie is too hard to bite into it is meant to dunk in some sort of hot beverage.
+Corrie De Beer Good point!
I'm from South Africa! Such common snacks to me :D
+MatthewEaton Official I know right! I just wished they ate biltong!!

We sure were lucky then!

Rudi Visagie Thank you! Oh, I'd love to try that :)
Anyone who wants to try awesome South African food try the below mentioned:

2) Vetkoek - Deep fried dough bread (Best with mince)
3) Bunnychow - Hollowed out half loaf of bread filled with curry mince
4) Boerewors - Very thick sausage (Beef and pork sausage mixed with spices)

7) Pap - Softly grounded maize (Once cooked its almost like thick dumplings of bread best served with gravy and meat side serving)
8) Biltong - as per the video. Dried meat that is spiced.
The posters of the video only tried some of our snack and sweets. The above mentioned some of the best food we have to offer.
+Plazmadawg ZA Thanks for this great list :)

How was experience down here in SA? Where you in Cape Town?
Oh my gosh! Talk about a trip down memory lane! haha! I've eaten way too many of every single item you guys ate in my lifetime! haha. I'm vegan now so that won't happen again! lol!
Vegan What Now Wow! That is really cool. Are there any familiar favorites that you can still eat now?
Samuel & Audrey No, only because i'm high carb vegan now haha. So I don't eat processed food at all. Plus I live in Colorado! haha
+Borrie Thanks for the suggestions! I hope we can come back soon. We really miss SA.
Hi guys!! I live in South Africa:) you should try: fudge, TOFFEE APPLES, KOEKSISTERS and VETKEOK!
Talisa Jasmin Sharkey Thanks for the great suggestions! I hope we'll be back again soon to try them :)
Hi Guys - the Cadbury Chocolate that Audrey was eating had pop rocks in them and the Sparletta is Rasberry flavoured.
+Alizane Van Der Merwe Thanks for letting us know! :)
I might be mistaken, but I think a "now" is a mars bar our version is the Bar-one. do you live in wilderness now? right around the corner from me. good spot to choose

Piri-piri (peri peri) is just A spice, not a spice mix, it's a type of very spicy chili used in Portuguese cuisine that became popular and traditional in some African countries.

Hahahaha...natural alarm clock.
Lol, I can't believe I enjoyed watching other people just eat snacks. Since I left South Africa, I noticed how different snacks are. Should have had cream soda. It's definitely a favourite.
Justin EightySeven Thank you! Also, appreciate the recommendation for cream soda :)
Justin EightySeven Cream Soda is the WINNNNNN!!! #Best
in the marvellous creations chocolate, the blue "hard candy" is actually popping candy, like pop rox.
Oh, that's what it is!
seeing that wonder bar brought back so much memories
Jarred Adams Oh, that is cool! I hope you can try one soon :)
You two are so Canadian, I love it. :)
+Ian Wilson LOL, thanks!
Yay I was hoping you would do a taste test, you need to try flings or corn curls and ouma's rusks with tea or coffee and a P.S chocolate bar, looks like u both are having a great time, what places are you travelling to.
Shari Venter Thank you! I really appreciate the suggestions :) We'll be traveling in Europe soon starting in Germany.
Samuel & Audrey OOo exciting, travel safe and hope u had a ball in south Africa 😀
Not from South Africa but know the best place in London England to pick up great South African food and drink as I fell in love with the country in 2014 and had to find a store back here in the U.K. Normal list for me 300 grams of biltong 100 grams of Droëwors and a bottle of cream soda
That is really cool to hear!

ive watched Ausie and US people tasting our treats, ive never seen a reaction like yours. Thank you guys it gets a bit personal when people do not like what I grew up to. All of those are awesome. They always say our treats are a bit to hard not considering that those things have been on transport for a couple of weeks. Yey Canadian People!
Thank you! I think a lot of the treats and candies you have are fantastic and we ended up missing them as soon as we left.

I have never eaten or seen the "chocolate log" and I keep seeing it in taste videos. Where do people get it????
It must be quite rare. We got it at the Spar in Wilderness.
Great video. Proudly South African and lots of love from Durban. I am so bored right now, this is my only entertainment at the moment.
Thank you! That is really cool to hear. We just had an overnight stay in Durban but would love to come back and explore properly next time.
You should really try a crunchie its a chocolate bar with honeycomb stuff in the middle. It's really good.
Marley Simpson Oh, we have those in Canada too :)
I'd adopt her in a heartbeat ! Sooo freakin' cute ! :) Loved this video too ! Thanks for sharing your South African discoveries with us !
SongsToTheSirens Thank you! The Chinchilla is really cute ;)
Peri-peri is a type of chili pepper, not a specific spice blend. So depending on how much they put in, it can be mild to really hot ... you got lucky :)
+Wolfie Inu Thanks for letting us know!
So touristy wearing those sandels XD love video guys
+ben nelb LOL, thanks!
In South Africa we also say marshmallow... mmmmallow is just what's on every beacon marshmallow product
Thanks for letting us know :)
Where in SA did you stay?
Sparletta is not made by Spar :)
Next time, try the pink marvelous creations bar. It has pink popping candy that pops in your mouth, not sure if you have something like that in America.
Nice video :)
Michelle Botma Thank you! We tried all of these in Wilderness.
Michelle Botma is correct its not made by Spar. Sparletta was a local soft drink company that got absorbed into Coca Cola SA
Well Done!
As an South African I'd say y'all did a great job presenting our Unique Treats. Not sure if you've had Milktart or Koeksister but if not make sure you do next time you here.
Lol yall should have went to township as well to try Malamohodu, sebete and Ditlhakwana. Lol you missed out😏
we have Mars bars in SA too :)...
bar one is the best version though
+Tarryn Proos We miss a lot of those treats now that we've left.
Why don't you do these types of videos anymore? They're so fun.
Ah, we'll need to revive this series sometime. We haven't done one since Argentina and Peru I believe.
I hope you guys tried some of our local craft beers! Some of the best beers out there!
Ripst0rm Indeed, we did get to. Agree with you - it's awesome.
There are about 5 different flavours in the Cadbury range. They are about 5 years old give or take. My favourite one has tio be the one with the jellybean's in it. They are scrumptious just like the gorgeous Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in the video.

Hiii guys you should try TEMPO BAR ...
kyle barnard Thank you for the suggestion! What exactly is that?
Samuel & Audrey en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadburys_Tempo My personal fav
Peri-peri is a chili pepper and the real thing is intensely spicy but South Africans like the mild version.
Interesting to hear!
+Issei Senpai Thank you very much! We actually did make a braai video as well :) We sure miss SA!

+ree life Oops! That's not a good one? We did enjoy them!
Great video!!! I really enjoyed it. You guys are really likable :) Come back soon!
+Celeste Bouwer Thank you very much!
We have Mars and Cadbury here too, & Peri Peri is African Birds Eye Chili. Not a spice mix.
Cool to hear!
I'm from South Africa 😁 Love this!
Thank you! We had a great time in South Africa :)
who else was let down when she got starberry creme soda instead of the green...
Haha!

+Kobus O Thanks for the suggestion! I hope we can come back and do that.
Thank you for sharing such an amazing video! It was enjoyable to watch.
cece Don Thank you for watching!
those birds that flew by are called, "HADIDA"
Thanks for letting us know!
That Now! bar you had is actually called a Bar One,i think they just made it look like that because it was their anniversary or something :)
Jeanné Smit Oh, that makes sense!
Samuel & Audrey Just a quick clarification, the Now bar is a variation on the Mars bar, but made by Beacon in South Africa. In my opinion it doesn't match up to the Mars bar. Jeanné Smit A Now bar is SO not a Bar One!! Now's have been around forever! But Bar Ones are better :) Mars are tasty too!
Krüger Otto Thanks for letting us know :)
The blue candy in the Cadbury chocolate bar, are pop rock candy
Oh, thanks for letting us know!
You literally picked 80% of the worst tasting snacks we have, haha. Biltong and Iron Brew is kickass though!
+Duan Strydom Oh, that's too bad! What else should we have included?
Next time you guys should definitely try Bar one and Tempo chocolate, Fritos chips, "koeksisters" (don't know how to explain them) and last but not least, Ostrich chili bites. It's biltong like you had but chili flavor and tastes a bit better than Kudu. Also if you're ever in SA again, order an Amarula dom pedro from any restaurant, it's to die for!
Omgoodness that Niki coconut bar. Looks fantastic. I love coconut and the only chocolate bar I have seen here in the States is Almond Joy
One of our favourites is a German Ritter sport coconut bar. Sooo yummy!

I'm getting hungry! I live in SA so it's nice to see what people think of our food. I find it weird that they aren't as easily available overseas as they are here.
Thanks Tracey! We sure enjoyed trying everything.
Ive had the scottish irn-bru (imported). Tastes way different from ours
Interesting to hear Nelis. I guess we're not as familiar with those flavors.
the blue stuff in the marvelous creation chocolate is supposed to be popping candy
+Vuyokazi Mthethwa Ah, that makes sense! Thanks for letting us know.
Love this video :) Sparletta is actually a part of Coca-Cola South Africa. They stock it everywhere, not only at Spar.
Thank you! We appreciate you letting us know about that. Kind of a silly mistake we made.
