The fried apple pie was around for 24 years. I hardly consider that a total failure. I guess the producers of this video ran out of ideas. I think it was something else than it was bad for you. They were HOT inside. The fried cherry had a very appropriate joke about how hot it was: "It said on the side: WARNING MOLTEN LAVA". Considering that I had a fried apple pie in McDonalds in Austria several years after they discontinued it in America, I'm willing to guess litigation or some movement towards less fried options was the culprit.

Little known secret: Wendy's had to settle a big lawsuit when one of the employees who was HIV positive got caught punching the clown and dropping his sauce into the ranch dressing on the superbar. It happened in my hometown in Georgia in the early 90s. Every Wendy's had a superbar and suddenly they all stopped stocking them even though the bar fixtures were still in the stores for at least a year afterwards. Wendy's damage control kept a lid on the media so the story only leaked to the local paper. But once the franchise owners found out they immediately discontinued service for the superbar because they didn't want to risk a copycat incident.

Yes, they even had a modified menu that included things like a fried shrimp basket, and Dan Cortes was the spokesperson in their commercials. Unfortunately the table service idea crashed and burned, and I do not think it lasted more than a year. However, I do think BK and other places like Wendy’s that used to have the large salad bar, started to prisoner what has now become the common counter-service sit down restaurant model where we still order at a counter but the menu quality and price are more akin to a sit down restaurant - this model has become very popular because it both reduces huge costs for the restaurant in terms of employees, but also fills a middle of the market for when you do not have the time or energy for a sit down experience (lunch time or a weeknight dinner etc). I think the BK table service idea really lead the way in showing this idea could work.

I loved them also. There was a Burger place near my elementary that sold one that was even better. Yumm I want them back too. In the 70's it was a bit less condiments and was called a Taco on a Bun. I'd get one with a bowl of beans and cheese which also doesn't exist anymore.
