Surprising to find this ranking on this channel. High on Fire is very oldschool and almost the complete antithesis of modern metal. It's very raw and not sounding processed as most metal sounds nowadays with all it corrections being done afterwards.
Baghdad, 10,000 Years, and Blood from Zion - what a freaking nuclear start to a debut album. AoSD will always be my favorite, but they’re all good. Glad to see this band getting love on the channel!
Such a heavy band. Albums a little "samey" as Pete suggests, but in the right mood they kick ass! 1. Death is This Communion 2. Snakes for the Divine 3. De Vermis Mysteriis 4. Electric Messiah 5. Luminiferous 6. Blessed Black Wings 7. Surrounded by Thieves 8. The Art of Self Defense
I adore High on Fire. Matt Pike is an amazing guitar player and metal ambassador. My top three albums are Snakes for the Divine, Surrounded by Thieves, and Blessed Black Wings.
Goddamn I love High On Fire. Best modern band of the past whatever. Thanks for doing this Pete! Wish Des was still in the band but that's the way it does. 8. Surrounded By Thieves 7. Blessed Black Wings 6. Luminiferous 5. The Art Of Self- Defense 4. Electric Messiah 3. Death Is This Communion 2. De Vermis Mysteriis 1. Snakes For The Divine All of these albums are great FYI. Just certain albums are B tier, some albums are A tier, and some albums are S tier.
I have several, but not all. For me that first album is my favorite. I got it when it was released and was blown away. Something totally new, for me, and didn't sound like anybody else. Just awesome. Hats off to Matt Pike!
De Vermis Mysteriius is my most recent CD and yeah it's killer. I might have put Messiah a little higher, but I agree overall. Amazing band, killer records!
Being an old doomer and SLEEP fan, I prefer their earlier works. Saw these guys a few times back around the turn of the century. If I had to list... Blessed Black Wings, Art of Self Defense, Surrounded By Thieves, and Death Is This Communion ..which honestly is the last HOF record I'm very familiar with. Matt's an old METAL soldier who's faithfully carried the torch and flown the flag for decades now. Very approachable and down to earth fellow to talk music with. Last time I saw em they closed their set with Venom's Witching Hour!!! ...nuff said
Thanks for the ranking. These guys reside in a place all their own. Definite Motorhead, Slayer, doom and thrash influences, but no one else really sounds like them. My top album is the debut: "The art Of Self Defense". After that, "Death Is This Communion", "Surrounded By Thieves", Luminiferous, and "Blessed Black Wings. Can`t go wrong with any of their albums.
Long time favorite. I've seen the band over 40 times. Early days are my favorite, the first three albums will always be my top three. Seeing them in those days was like seeing a band that combined Sleep, Motorhead, Celtic Frost and SLAYER. None more metal.
For me 1 Mysteries 2 Blessed Black Wings 3 Electric Messiah 4 Snakes for the Devine 5 Surround by Theievs 6 Death is this Communion 7 Art of Self Defence 8 Leminifetious
Thanks for the ranking! Discovered HOF at Sweden Rock Festival 2010. I remember walking away from one of the stages (but have completely managed to forget who I saw) when I, from across the festival area, heard what sounded like a tank battle. I´d been on my way to take care of a bodily necessity but that sound awakened the cat in me. Once at the stage, Initially I was a bit surprised that it was just a trio that created a veritable Pandemonium. I then stood for the three quarters of an hour HOF had left of their gig (without wetting yself) and remembering being happy as a pig in dung of what I experienced as an alloy of Black Sabbath and Motörhead. Have seen them three more times since. On stage Mike and the guys are a force of nature. My three favorites are (but in no particular order): Snakes For The Divine, Death is This Communion and Blessed Black Wings. So, many thanks for the ranking!
Yesss!! I missed those guys last month. I got to know them at the time of Death is this communion. Heard a couple of tracks and went to the concert. Man they blew me away that tour. I play that one and De Vermes Mysteriis the most. But really like most of their stuff. The last one Electric Messiah was a bit of a letdown for me. But before that was Sleeps's The Sciences which completely rules! Awesome album. All albums are good to fantastic but they're not the most consistant band. Quality varies within albums, but when they're on fire you can't match those guys. Matts guitar playing and Des drums are on another level.
what a great band! I met them in 2009. Since then I always listen to them. a trio that looks like a stampede. no mercy for the ears. 1 -Snakes for the divine 2-Death Is This Communion 3- Of Mysterious Vermis 4-Surrounded by Thieves 5- The Art of Self Defense 6-Luminiferous 7-Blessed Black Wings 8 - Electric Messiah
1. Snakes for the Divine 2. Death is this Communion 3. Blessed Black Wings 4. Surrounded by Thieves 5. De Vermis Mysteriis 6. The Art of Self Defense 7. Electric Messiah 8. Luminiferous
High on Fire is a legendary stoner/doom metal band and Matt Pike is an amazing frontman and guitarist. Here would be my ranking: 8. The Art of Self Defense 7. Electric Messiah 6. Blessed Black Wings 5. Surrounded by Thieves 4. Luminiferous 3. De Vermis Mysteriis 2. This Is This Communion 1. Snakes for the Divine
I love Sleep and Now im starting to check High On Fire ...usually I buy the song I like the most on Downloading mp3's I just made a hour playlist of alot of the albums Thanks as always Pete!
Best way to describe High On Fire is if Motorhead formed 25 years later and was influenced by The Melvins & early Metallica. Took me a while to get into at first because a big departure from Sleep. Hard to rank due to consistency and don't have an album in discography that is head and shoulders above the rest nor do they have any duds. My top 3 Death Is This Communion Blessed Black Wings Snakes For The Devine Favorite song 10,000 years
Been listening a lot to High on Fire and Church of Misery lately....and in both cases is hard to make an album ranking, most of the stuff is fantastic.
Thank you for ranking Snakes for the Divine so high - such an incredible record and my personal favourite. Seems to not get nearly as much love within the stoner rock community as their earlier stuff but so damn good!
Not heard of them before this live podcast but get a sense of Tony Iommi influence in Matt Pike's playing at first glance. Definitely be listening to more of this band. 😯🇦🇺
1. Death is This Communion 2. Blessed Black Wings 3. Surrounded By Thieves 4. Snakes for the Divine 5. De vermis mysteriis 6. The Art of Self Defence 7. Luminiferous 8. Electric Messiah
Great band!! Interestingly your favorite has always been by far my least favorite so I now have a curiosity to revisit and see if something sticks with me or I gain an appreciation cause as of now it’s the only album of there’s I don’t like. Great content
Hey Pete, Loved this episode. Love HOF and Matt Pike!!! I'm listening to Cult of Luna.....any chance of a 'Ranking' for them........or maybe Tool.........or Eyehatehod or maybe Destroyer666??? Excellent channel either way, Regards from England mate🤘🤘🤘
Hey Pete, if you truly believe the curse is real as you say, you must get a copy of Snakes For The Divine that has the bonus track called Mystery of Helm. It’s a phenomenal song. It also has two bonus live tracks of Eyes and Teeth (live) and Come Down Hessian(Live). It was a Best Buy exclusive when it was first released in 2010. I hope you are able to find it if interested.
Where the hell does Pete find the time to even listen to all of this stuff? This band and genre isn't my cup of tea, but leave it to Pete to cover all the bases
@bryanmcfadden4071 many fall for this kind of word of mouth hype , do your homework and find out who the true riff - masters are ! Start with Dave Brock of Hawkwind , someone who Matt Pike would get on his knees and praise ! Also the few ideas that Matt ripped off from Hawkwind - do your research !
@@bryanmcfadden4071 while he may not be the most original player on the planet, a lot of us enjoy what Pike brings to the hard rock and metal table so let those of us enjoy his schtick for whatever it is that it brings us…Hawkwind rules as well imho and enjoy them as much as I enjoy tons of other music including High On Fire, Sleep, etc…if people want to heap praise on Pike that’s their prerogative to do so whether you feel he’s the worst player in the world or not

I was a bit skeptical when I saw the video, but you pretty much nailed it, great taste!

Just listened to AoSD today I thought it was amazing
That bass at the start of 10000 years is just mad!

Fun fact! Mastodon met at a HOF show (well Bill & Brann met Brent & Troy)
This band is relentless. Pure unrefined metal!
Great band I have 4 of their albums I actually just got their 7th album yesterday and looking forward ro the other 4 to get in the future
Great ranking, I like the wicked sound of the debut, talking about sludge could you do a ranking for unearthly trance?
Great list, no weak albums to be found in their whole discography..De Vermis is also my number one
Been listening a lot to High on Fire and Church of Misery lately....and in both cases is hard to make an album ranking, most of the stuff is fantastic.

Frost Hammer & Fury Whip are two of the coolest songs ever, Matt Pike sounds like Lenny on steroids.
Romulus and Remus - two brothers , founders of Rome .
Thanks for this only bought one so far
High on fire ranking!!! 🔥 This would be a tough one for me. Enjoy all their albums! Would love to see them live...with Clutch
I love this band and Sleep too, but I don’t have most of the latter post-Relapse era. Have you ever considered doing a Living Colour ranking?

Would be nice a SoT review of Pike vs. The Automaton by the way.

Hey Pete,

I’ve already done Tool actually.
Must of missed it I'll go and check it out!!!!
Thanks,

I know it’s not high on fire, but what are your thoughts on kalas? I feel like everything Matt pike touches is at least interesting.

first four are great, then the concept stuff lost me
HoF couldn't put out a bad album if they tried.
Dii is amazing - ill disagree on that
Good music but I've never liked the guy's voice. There are some much better bands around imo. Cheers.
