    Here are a few corrections from this video:
    Apple is doing a fair amount in addition to duel band GPS: New satellite and signal models plus new custom positioning algorithms make optimal use of available satellite signals. They work together with onboard sensors and Apple Maps data including road, bike, and trail routes to better measure your actual workout route and distance.
    For Apple Watch Ultra to be a dive computer, a user would need to use Oceanic+ app (third party) to get a No Deco Planner, a Logbook, and dive stats. The Depth app is used just for shallow water activities.
    I called the second low power mode "Low power with reduced accuracy" but it's actually called "Low Power Mode workout with fewer GPS and heart rate readings”

    I absolutely love my ultra. I am a regular guy. I don’t run. Dive. Any of that. Although I do like to adventure,hike and walk I can’t wait to use it in the wild. But everyday use is still….just an apple watch but I do love it.

    • @mlegrand

      Yeah, in a lot of ways it’s just an Apple Watch but it’s really that paired with nicer hardware. (compared with the other options) I think it justifies the higher price point. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

      @@ernokivesrinta1655I know how u feel mate, I also have extreme anxiety, depression etc but I have the ultra & just because it’s sold as a rugged outdoors tough sports watch doesn’t mean that it’s not also the BEST on the market for apps etc. also it’s great to use as a sleep monitor as I can lose track of that very easily as I literally have a zero regular sleeping pattern. The ECG is also good to ensure I’m not having any issues tied into my illness’s. I hope 🤞 that u can start to feel better soon & maybe make a trip out to the local shop even if u don’t need to buy anything (this is me giving advice to you when I don’t even follow it myself 😅) Have a great day & take each day as it comes.

    I had the Fenix 6X for 3 years, and wanted to give the Ultra a try before I went for 7X. Main reasons is the smart aspects. Apps and communication.
    It did work for that aspect, but actually wore both watches for 2 days to see how the training and health monitor worked.
    I went for cross country and the Ultra did not record distance and GPS. Weird. Workaround is to choose run!?
    I bought 4-5 apps to try to mimic body battery and that felt like a jungle. Spent about 100 bucks and it didn’t come close to the presentation of stress, HRV, body battery on the Fenix.
    The big test was about 2 days in with two watches and I got the flu. Fenix showed significant raised levels in stress that evening and HRV dropping the same night.
    I then realized that Ultra is not what I need yet and I appreciate the stress monitor and body battery too much on the Fenix. The Ultra did not show those signs of getting ill but maybe it was too short of a time wearing it?
    Some day, I hope there’s a hybrid of what Garmin and Apple do to cover all my needs. For now, a Fenix and iPhone will do it.

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  Год назад +5

      Wow, this is really good feedback for people to consider when thinking about buying the AWU. I agree with you that Garmin is doing some very interesting things with body battery, sleep tracking and HRV. I could see Apple leaning into more heath predictive stuff with body temperature, HRV and blood pressure. 🤷🏻‍♂️ We’ll see. Maybe Watch OS 10 will give us some clues as to their future direction next fall. 🤔

      Agree with this. Just sold my Ultra. For me, it was Garmin Connect vs Apple Health. Body battery, sleep score, training readiness, recovery are all better and more insightful than what Apple Health has to offer. I also like the 5 days of battery life vs the 3 that you get with the Ultra. I have the Epix 2 and I never even think about battery life. On the flip side, the AWU is a much more stylish watch. I like the look of it better than the Epix but not enough to switch.

    Great follow up, really appreciate your thoughts and insight. I have been a Garmin person for years, currently have the Fenix 6XPro and a Coros Vertix2. Use the Garmin more as I like their eco-system better. The Apple watch Ultra really peaks my interest and I do like having buttons an not a touch screen. The touch screen seems to sensitive and has the opportunity for inadvertent mistakes. Thanks for your work and look forward to more videos.

I think I will stick to my Garmin for training, as it just all works together, but I’m longing for the day that I can have effective text messaging or phone calls from my wrist in addition. Nice review. It’s the best watch I have owned. For my wrist size (just over 7) the size is great and no button push issues. I’d encourage anyone to get the black blue ocean band if they buy. The trail loop is super comfortable, but they get dirty real quick (even the grey black). Just my take, I don’t use my trail loop much anymore, you can wear the ocean band anywhere, the blue black even looks good in an office.

      Yes! I'll mention that in my watch band suggestion video that I'm working on. My trail loop got really dirty on the orange pull tab. I tried cleaning it the best I could but I don't think it'll ever look the same. I know the Alpine loop can have the same problem. The Ocean band might be the best value option when picking up the AWU. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

    I was gifted the Apple Watch Ultra for Christmas which has been a huge upgrade from my series 3. I don’t fall into the category of ultra running, but I do train for sprint, Olympic, and for the first time this year I’m training for a 70.3. The best thing I’ve noticed so far is the touch screen responsiveness after a swim. My series 3 was basically useless once the screen was wet which threw off brick sessions and distance data during an open water swim or race. I have done many pool swims since getting the ultra and once I unlock the screen I can swipe and end/pause the swim workout with almost no glitching. Super job with improving that aspect. Can’t wait to try out the multi-sport mode once it warms up a bit in the Midwest.

AW gives basic calories and HR info when working out, no insights at all about workouts, sleep tracking or wellness, not to mention combining all those stats to give you excercise loads, recovery metrics, hrv status, body battery, sleep score, etc. If you like those stats then no matter the intensity of your workout, get a Garmin (plus battery life is on another league). Glad to hear your well-informed triathlon training points on this! I am an apple user but the lack of complete sports, training and health tracking integration is a big minus for me at this point in life. But at the same time I want to connectivity convenience offered by the Ultra while out running or swimming when I don’t bring my phone.
    One of these two companies has to get the other side of this equation locked down. I suspect Garmin will do it at battery life expense but lack iMessage integration because Apple will not allow that. And Apple won’t do full health/sports/training integration because there are disparate apps for that.

    THE BRIGHTNESS is brilliant when diving in murky water and in caves, when you even shallow dive viability can be 50% what it is at the surface. Also when in the outback where there is only star light having a bright light at hand is brilliant. Look outside your own backyard to see the value of so many of the nicknacks on the watch, like the Walky talky app when there is no cell coverage.

I remember it felt like the old bulky Suunto watches. It also feels a bit heavy on my wrist while running. I prefer to have my wrists lite, and I felt that I could feel it knocking on my wrists. I swim masters also. I'd say stroke type detection is hit and miss for both Garmin and Apple I'll try to do a more detailed comparison at some point but what I like about Garmin is the drill mode. You can put it in drill mode and then select the distance. You can also use that mid workout to fix any mixed up laps if needed. Then you'll end up with the correct distance even if you're doing one arm drills or something else that the watch can't detect. Apple expects everything to be automatic. Just turn it on, swim and it'll do pretty well at calculating the distance. It might miss drills but it'll now account for kick sets. I'd probably stick to the 255. That watch in particular did extremely well in my best open water swimming watch video.

    They sell screen protectors for these watches and they are almost impossible to see if you do it right. They work well. Apple Watch bands lack variety & durability. The issue with accident button tapping is common with classic watches. Try a tactical military watch and that has scratch production. I find plenty of leather, metal, rubber, & cloth bands on the internet for sale. This is the first Apple Watch that I would buy. Titanium & crystal glass face are excellent materials for longer time of use on one watch. Classic watches ,such as Tag Huer, last years. These materials ad value. Question is the Apple software longevity. How long does the battery last? How much does a battery replacement cost?

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  Год назад

      I know that this battery isn’t easy to access. So I’m guessing it’s expensive to replace the battery. Lithium Ion batteries only last so long. 2-3 years 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  Год назад +1

      Hi Robert from Sweden, I think this is going to be a tricky call. The Epix 2 is probably the better choice for road and mountain biking. For example, you'll get mountain biking specify metrics like Flow and Grit metrics for how smoothly your biking on the trail. The mapping is also significantly better on the Garmin. I do think you'll miss all of the smart features that you'd get on the Apple Watch Ultra. The Workoutdoors app might be good enough. (assuming your power meter is Bluetooth compatible?)
      In an ideal world, you'd combine the two and use the AWU on your wrist and a cycling computer like the Garmin Edge 530 or whichever Edge computer Garmin is releasing next.
