    Matt , looking forward to see how this “ Vitals app” goes. I own the Apple Watch Ultra and I also own an Ōura ring. My main concern is recording my metrics. It seems you have to sleep while wearing your watch in order to record wrist temperature and sleep metrics. I do not wear my watch to bed but I do wear my Ōura ring. Right now the ring captures all the sleep data runs it through the “Health app“ so I get all my sleep data. Hopefully they will do the same thing with the new Vitals app. But I still don’t know why you can’t calibrate your wrist temperature while just wearing the watch.

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  2 месяца назад

      Well I can’t speak to why Apple does thing this way but I have a feeling that it’ll mostly be for people who wear their watch to sleep. The Oura ring might be a better option (and more insightful with HRV) than this Vitals app in its current form. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

And people willing to pay $800 for race entry and $5000+ for the bike are probably willing to buy a different watch for their triathlon races. 🤷‍♂️

    Great video, new subscriber as a result!
    I'm on the beta and I'm torn with the vitals app, too. I'm not totally certain what to do with the data that it's giving me, other than the very high level "you're not working hard enough/you're working too hard" indication.
    Also, I'd love to see Apple give more guidance as part of Fitness+ how to interpret and adjust based upon the HRV data that the watch is providing. As a general matter, I think Apple could be doing a lot more with Fitness+ to teach on the use of data coming from the watch. I think Garmin does that better. The cynic in me wonders whether Apple doesn't do that because there's not really a scientific consensus on what HRV means and how it should change behaviors.

    Nice job on this video! 👏👏👏 I too am surprised Apple is not using HRV in its Vitals app. I am unaware of any other major fitness watch that does not avail itself of HRV to determine your current "state of Fitness." All Apple Watch 3rd party fitness apps that I use employ HRV. In fact, as far as I can tell, HRV is one of the most important metrics used by these apps. The Apple Watch, for all its merits, has really lagged behind other fitness wearables in the quality of its fitness information. They have left it to 3rd party apps to take up the slack. FINALLY the Vitals app is here to address this weakness. But from what I can tell, the Vitals app still has a way to go to be a worthy competitor to the information provided by wearables like the Whoop strap, Aura ring, similarly priced Garmin watches, etc.

    • @mlegrand

    • @leighrobinson
      @leighrobinson 2 месяца назад +1

      I can’t help but be cynical that they want to leave it to 3rd party apps despite the marketing fluff around the Ultra’s capabilities…
      I get Athlytic is pretty comprehensive but a subscription to collate the data I’m already sampling with my expensive watch? Forget it. The health app seems to be a 20 minute skin on a database by design and it leaves a sour taste.
      What is the actual point of the Ultra series if it isn’t actually going to tip towards being a serious training tool? It’s being badly let down by software and watchOS11 doesn’t really start to address that, imo.

    I have been using Watch OS 11 for about a month now. I also wear a Garmin EPIX Gen 2. The training load feature on IOS generally mirrors the Garmin training load from the graphs perspective. It would be nice to see the actual numbers in addition to the graph. I agree that having HRV as a daily metric should be part of the vitals. The check in feature works great also. Interested to see what Garmin’s Fenix 8 has which may be released this coming Tuesday, May 27th. Rumor has it that it will finally get a speaker and microphone which would be great. • @mlegrand

      It depends. I would do two things. Tighten the AWU and move it up away from the wrist joint when looking for accurate data and if possible wear a second watch connected to that HR strap to directly compare data when exercising. That should give you an idea of accuracy. I’d also suggest making sure the strap has a good connection by adding a little moisture to the two sensors that are in contact with your skin.
      The two data sets should not be vastly different. If they are something is up. It could be a thousand things but typically the strap is more accurate than the optical hR sensor.

After comparing apple to garmin in this regard, they are usually really close with this setting toggled on. For me, the most valuable info is found in overall trends and deviations in HRV. I find that a drop in HRV from my baseline usually correlates to faster burnout during the day or generally feeling less energetic and “well”. There are also some decent 3rd party apps that take this info and give you some more insights similar to what garmin does. I hope Apple expands on this in future updates.

      "The Blood Oxygen app on your Apple Watch will occasionally measure your blood oxygen levels if background measurements are on. This will usually happen when you are not moving. Depending on how active you are, the number of readings collected each day and the time between these readings will vary. Blood oxygen measurements use a bright red light that shines against your wrist, so it may be more visible in dark environments. If you find the light distracting, you can turn off background measurements." From apple support. It measurements are accurate but not useful unless continuously monitored. If you climb a mountain and want a quick snap shot of your oxygen saturation at altitude, it's accurate. Masimo also made this claim in their lawsuit. The issue is not accuracy but sampling rate. If it's a reading once a minute or at even greater intervals and you begin to snore and you oxygen saturation drops for 20 seconds, it will miss it entirely.

      Do any other sport watches measure O2 Sat continuously? I would think that would tank the battery severely.

      @@Testoflove-z7n - So if your spo2 dropped for 20 seconds you'd have a 1/3 odds of catching that dip. That doesn't seem completely useless to me. What are the sample rates of the finger clips that the hospitals use? They can't be continuous either. They're based on the same technology and used to diagnose sleep apnea right?

      @@mlegrand it is useless for sleep apnea. The hospital ones or even a cheap Amazon one usually sample at 1hz or greater. That’s a sample every second.
      “Sampling Rate: High Resolution pulse oximeters (HRPO) incorporate a sampling rate of >1 / second. Lower sampling rates can underestimate event amplitudes to apneas and miss events. This can cause an artificially low oxygen desaturation index (ODI).”
      Apple Watch can be even longer than once a minute. Essentially useless for sleep apnea.
