In this video, Dr. Berg talks about the ketogenic diet, women, and hormones.
    1. Decrease insulin - when you decrease insulin by doing intermittent fasting and the ketogenic diet, you are instantly enhancing certain fat-burning hormones.
Insulin is a fat-burning hormone and it has the power of preventing the fat-burning process. In the presence of insulin, all the fat-burning hormones are nullified.
By lowering insulin, you enhance these certain hormones:
    • Thyroid Hormone
    • Growth Hormone
    • Glucagon
    • Adrenaline
    2. Increase bile production - it helps to convert the inactive form of T4 to the active form T3. It also increases the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
    3. Increase dietary fat - provides the raw material for steroid hormones.
    4. Decreasing insulin will also decrease PCOS.
    5. Running your body in ketones greatly supports the brain. Ketones are neuroprotective.
    6. Decrease pancreas stress.

I’ve had an irregular period since my 20s and now I am 47. Ever since I started Keto and an IF, my period is so accurate now.
One thing really important is that my tonsils were so huge that doctor recommended to remove them surgically. Guess what?
With Keto, the left side of tonsil is literally gone and the right side became so small which make me to breath alot easier.

Hormonal fluctuations still occur whilst doing Keto healthily. A week before my period I am unusually more hungry and have to eat a little more. After I can return to 2 meals a day and happy I.F. We arnt like men. We have to finely tune our needs to our cycle even if it’s a healthy cycle. 🦋

It depends on the individual. I did start to lose my period after doing keto for a year. I realized that I needed to add more carbs, like sweet potatoes and beans, one week before my period to balance my hormones- help my progesterone production.
I believe that my loss of period had much to do with increase of testosterone.

If anyone came to me with this nonsense of CLEAN Keto eating being detrimental to women, I would tell them since starting keto, my peri-menopausal symptoms have drastically decreased and my cycle has even returned to a regular timetable and stopped being a little sporadic due to the change in hormones. I LOVE keto, LOVE Dr. Berg and love the 46-pound deficit that my body is enjoying. I’ve never felt better or healthier.
Dr. Berg, this change I decided to make by starting keto four short months ago is all because of you!! Thank you for your wisdom!

Women with PCOS who have regular periods pre-keto will actually have irregular periods on keto. It happened to me. Those with irregular periods pre-keto will help them tremendously. I've gathered a lot of information about that. Now I have no clue why it's good for women for irregular periods but bad for those with regular ones. Doesn't mean I'll stop keto though.

Well I have to tell you that I started to follow you about 3 weeks ago or so!! by then I was like 95-99% plant based, I decided to go plant based because I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and I have some nodules in my thyroid as well, so when I started to watch your videos I decided to increase only more good fats (vegan fats) so one day I decided to incorporate salmon to my diet again I must say that even though I’m not doing the full keto diet I got my period back today!! After nearly four months without it!! 😱😱😱 Unbelievable
And I was a little afraid because as you said many people doctors and “experts in health” say keto diet it’s not good for women, and specially for people with thyroid diseases

Now I can relate to that. I had medical report about me diagnosed with PCOS. I did ultrascan and my reproductive organ were perfectly normal until I took a blood test to check the abnormalities of steroid hormone. It appeared that the androgen level is exceeded the normal range followed with high insulin level. Since then I used IF + KETO diet to improve my health and amazingly, my menses started to come regularly after not having menses for two years.

Found this video after reading a few online articles, which basically scared me away from keto. I quit drinking alcohol 37 days ago and have been eating animal-based/keto since November 6. I've lost 8 lbs so far. I started researching decreased estrogen due to keto diet because I've experience regular periods with a couple days of spotting in between, which is odd for me. I feel better after listening to this. I started IF back in 2019 (and have maintained it and the weight loss from it up until this point) in combinatiom with quitting alcohol for over a year, and lost 25 lbs!! The weight fell off of me in just a few months. 5'8" female always called "big-boned" and "curvy. " Can't wait to see how I feel after a few more months of keto/animal-based!

My hair started falling out and I suffered from insomnia for two months. I didn’t lose any weight at all. • @lillypod1337

You mentioned hair loss and insomnia....omg let me tell you, at times I was so scared (i already have fine nordic hair) that I was willing to stay chubby just for the sake of hair. And the insomnia lasted for about 2 straight months. I doubted all of this, but wasn't willing to completely quit because I was desperate to heal my severe brain fog and general misery. I came to the conclusion that fat-soluble vitamins gets flushed out rapidly during keto/IF and it was the vitamin D that causes the hair loss. You need to take Vitamin D !!! The insomnia at night had a lot to do with blood sugars dropping slightly low and my liver hadn't been exercised enough to release glycogen to stabilize this over night and keep on sleeping. Every time I would hit REM (not Delta, the deep sleep) it would wake me up. So basically I slept in 2 hour rations through the whole night, every night for 4 months. I've been doing this for 6 months now and the excessive hair loss seems to have stopped, I have noticed a ton of new follicles and stubbles of hair on my scalp (pokey little stubbles when you run your fingers over the top of your scalp). My believe is that my intake of Sea Kelp regenerated new hair follicles (Iodine regenerates and nourishes hair follicles) and most of the nutrition went into that rather than holding on to old hair, making it seem like I had hair loss (scary). Keto is not as important as intermitten fasting, because IF induces autophagy, which allows cells to open and let the old out and the new in, therefor nourishing every cell in your body, even the hair.

Much needed.. should have added that hormone imbalances do cause blood sugar rises even if on keto. I've been keto for nearly 3 years now.. love it..won't ever stop this lifestyle. I test blood sugar daily for years and going thru menopause I've seen my blood sugar goes up even while doing everything right during those fluctuations. If women aren't careful and pay attention, you could be insulin resistance and diabetic in no time even while living keto. Just a word of caution.

@@Vita_V89 keto is good for pcos..keep it healthy fats tho... Estrogen seems to affect how the body reacts to insulin. Watch the phytoestrogenic foods. I'm going thru menopause and am learning that had I not be watching blood glucose closely that I could be heading toward insulin resistance which leads to diabetes. The keto lifestyle has helped keep things in check and now I've added intermittent fasting during the hormone fluctuations. I feel women should know this and test Blood glucose every morning fasted and eat those things that keep it stabilized as much as possible.

Okay, here is my keto question then. If I am eating more healthy fats, I will produce more estrogen, correct? Since I am postmenopausal, I am not making progesterone, correct? So, does that not increase my risk of migraine which is often caused by hormonal imbalance? What say ye? Won't eating more fat cause estrogen dominance? So interested to hear your answer to this dilemma. Thank you!

have multiple fibroids and I am so confused over what to eat. The consensus is I should eat no animal products, no bread, no grains, no rice, no potatoes, etc. Only some vegetables and fruit. I have tried this and I am naturally underweight. This diet put me in severe weight loss. I started eating pumpernickel bread with peanutbutter to keep my weight up between smoothies and salads. So I'll certainly still be VERY careful with my carbs.

It gets better! This happens to me in the beginning because of the carb to no carb adjustment. Probably a bit of candida die off.

How do we figure out optimal protein & fat intake - especially for losing fat. Should one lower fat intake to burn our own body fat?
