After Rex got his Bio Advanced Mind Invaluable Control Enhanced Chip Removed, was pressumed dead, Not only Appo got Promoted to Commander but became New leader of the 501st Legion Clone Troopers.
He wasn't created at the time of the rots but my theory is that he painted his helmet like the 332nd and when it came time for order 66 he didn't have his original helmet so he took a regular 501st helmet

Appo took over the 501st when Rex was sent to Mandalore as Commander Rex
After Rex got his Bio Advanced Mind Invaluable Control Enhanced Chip Removed, was pressumed dead, Not only Appo got Promoted to Commander but became New leader of the 501st Legion Clone Troopers.
I wish Appo had a more of a distinct appearance as a Soldier in Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith.
