1. Stratus - (Billy Cobham) 2. Led Boots 6:50 (Jeff Beck) 3. Hells Bells 11:28 (Bill Bruford of Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, UK, Roy Harper, Bruford, etc) 4. Loss Of Control 15:13 (Van Halen) 5. The Stranger 18:45 (Tony McAlpine) 6. Nightmare Cinema 22:50 (Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater, Black Country Communion, etc.) 7. Hell's Kitchen/ Lines In The Sand 28:38 (Dream Theater)
At times I can detect Mike slipping between rush or drag in his timing, but only at times! In the end I prefer his clear organic approach whereby he can ligitimately fase in and out of perfect time but only at times where his spirit for musical expression allows. Overall he is so spot on but unlike his Managing replacement in dream theater portnoy has the ebb and flow of jazz musicians and classical alike. Portnoys true timing prowess has alot to do with his experience in arranging dream theater pieces in his career. As a result, his ebb and flow is elastic enough to let the music breath when appropriate,ie push or pull the feel when necessary, yet precise enough to never obscure the pulse original. Portnoy is so significant in the bands he has played with sound more human and less over rehearsed. One last mention, sherinian nails the original keyboard sound from that Cobham record! Most authentic to the original here
Amazing, Extraordinary, Tony MacAlpine is a monster with them

Repost the song list with the original performers: 1. Stratus - Billy cobham 2. Led Boots - Jeff Beck 3. Hells Bells - Bill Bruford 4. Loss Of Control - Van Halen 5. The Stranger - Tony MacAlpine 6. Nightmare Cinema - Derek Sherinian 7. Hell's Kitchen / Lines In The Sand - Dream Theater

This band is the best parts of DT, Planet X, and Steve Vai's band, and I might like it more than any of the above mentioned. This is quality stuff! I drifted away from the whole Prog thing over the last decade and I'm fricking tickled to just now be discovering this collab. Seeing Portnoy take on Apocalypse and make it his biatch raises my respect level so much for the dude. I'm glad this happened.
TRUST AND BELIEVE MIKE CAN PLAY VIRGILS LINES AND VISE VERSA.. AND ? THE BAND IS TIGHT AND THE BOTTOM END IS IN POCKET. JUST FRIENDS HAVING A GOOD TIME. THESE ARE WAY PAST THE WHOS BETTER AGE... THEY ARE ALL GREATS IN THIER OWN RIGHT.
Every time Tony mcalpine builds in a solo to the point where he hits an awesome vibrato and holds the guitar up and out with feeling, I always think that he should be wearing a helmet
Of all Mikes post Dream W.Dogs, Sons, this was my favorite. Screw vocals these cats just need to go instrumental trio. IMHO. I hope they are back together 🙏🏽
I hope they do a studio lo. I bought the live cd a few years ago then nothing happened ?? Pornographers & Sheenan are great together and Tony is a killer guitarist 👍🏻
If he was a movie star or political leader his death would be investigated and every detail of his activities leading up to his infection would be public knowledge. But we will never know. Can only be sad that it happened so quickly. 😢 He was a great guy who was very humble in his final years.
holy crap....to remember all those notes..i have the DVD from 2013 , this vid was recorded when? they need to do Edge Of Insanity in its entirety & more Sherinian solo stuff, great post, thanks
You do know the first piece is Stratus by Billy Cobham (from his 1973 album Spectrum), right? Massive Attack sampled the bass, guitar and drums for Safe From Harm in 1991. The original bass player was the incredible Leland Sklar who's played with just about everyone.
Nice to see you all got together ,about dam time,I was asking for many a moon .If you plan to hit the road or just a Cd please let me know.Love the choice of tunes you boys decided to play.Take care guys and do forget let us all know, cause we are all interested.
Gotta say I did NOT see that Mahavishnu cover coming! I played the record with that song for my friends in high school and they flipped out because of how good it was.
Having strayed away from prog metal and bass playing over the last years, this brings me the feels... Taking the ol' six stringer to have a bit of fun (and cringe over my now sloppy techinique *Sigh*). Thanks for uploading this, Jonathan!
Macalpine has a sound that is really amazing. I know he plays well but that tone!!!
Four absolute giants. Excellent all over, but man, Billy is really in the pocket all the time. He just can not not groove! Love it.
1. Stratus - (Billy Cobham)

Fourt monsters not only metal , fourt monsters of MUSIC
Thanks !!!!! ROCK ON 🤘🤘
Mike Portnoy is human metronome....with feel!
The drums and bass sound incredible together! Perfect sound recording
Daryl Smith 100% agreed. He puts a lot of feeling in his playing. The best drummer imho
Check our Tony MacAlpine's mid 90's live shows with Mike Terrano on drums. Portnoy could take some lessons.
@@AlphSlayer Someone in a comment of another video said that Portnoy style is organic. Love this one.

the best part of planet x is missing - Virgil Donatii - Portnoy can't play his lines, let alone play Billy Cobham's...

Insane, fucking amazing.
Nicely done on Loss of Control by VH. About the only way we'll ever get to hear it these days.
...Jeff Beck - RIP...!

Bill endorses a good many products these days , but I still see that 1980's Pierce amp in that smaller rack , lol.

Wonderful! What a combination of talents!
The band is flawless live. My God what musicianship.
Gotta say I did NOT see that Mahavishnu cover coming! I played the record with that song for my friends in high school and they flipped out because of how good it was.
Did not hear a Mahavishnu cover... you may be referring to the "Billy Cobham" song "Stratus" that Jeff Beck covered for years.
@@jirusjirus9322 ah yeah, i meant stratus by cobham
OMG what kind of Massive Attack is this? 0:23
Any band that does Cobham is a band I listen to
