Among the countless gifts my wife of 43 years has given me, one of the very best is John Prine. She saw him at the Earl of Old Town in the early 70's and was smitten -- by his music and his personage. She introduced him to me in 1975 when we were dating. He has been our constant musical companion for 45 years, seen him live at least 50 times. He became like a family friend. I play him in my office, while working around the place, walking, fflying, biking, almost anything ... more than everyone else I listen to combined, I'd guess. Hard to believe he is gone. So thankful we made it to Nashville for his New Year's Eve concert. John was at the top of his game. But John will always be with us. And unlike so many who have passed, we can hear his words as often as we want. That is something to be thankful for in this so sad time. Godspeed John Prine. Thanks for everything. You earned your rest.
@@Detectivepopcorn91 And of course, we thought we were the only ones in the entire world who felt that way. At least we know now that we weren't alone.
When I went to spend 6 months in Europe in 2006, one of the albums I bought was my first john prine album, Fair & Square. I listened to that album nearly every day on that trip. like a child playing a record over and over, I listened to it on every long train ride, when I would go out for long walks getting lost in new cities, at night in my bunk in some scummy hostel thousands of miles from home, or in a park sitting under a tree drinking cheap beer. Every song on this record is perfect, and ever song for me brings back waves of memories from all over Europe, not just of where I was at the time, but the sunsine on my face that day, or the cold rainy drizzle at night walking the stone alleys in a rain coat. Every song is a memory of exploration, personal growth, loneliness, happiness, joy; everything i experienced on the greatest journey of my life. Every one of his songs has a way for to connect to our humanity and shared experiences, often through humor, but sometimes through downright sad loneliness. After all they say we all die alone, and somewhere tonight, John Prine did just that in a hospital. Alone, but not forgotten.
Loneliness is a common theme in many of John's songs, isn't it. As you say, we are all ultimately alone, (though not necessarily lonely). I enjoyed your reminiscence of your time in Europe and how this album intertwines with that. Haven't heard it before tbh, although I'm familiar with John's earlier works. Listening now, and it's a lovely album. It is so sad how you describe the circumstance of John's death, which is tragically happening to numerous poor souls across the globe right now. Such very sad times. All The Best To You, David S
Very well said. I have read the great philosophers. But i have come to the decision today that JP was the best one. His words continue to move me, make me grateful for those in my life and enjoy my time on the planet. 💜💚💜
I am praying for you to recover and stay with us a while longer - I have a lot of listening left in my 71 year old ears, and I NEED for you to fill my soul with your beauty! I will be praying for all of your family and those of us who feel you are family to us too!
I've known about John Prine most of my music life. But in the last couple years, really got to pay attention to him and his songs. What a joy. Thanks John. Thanks so much. Peace be with you.
What an exemplary balladeer, with a life of service bringing us great verse set to music and some great performances with a generous heart. I just love his generous attributions to his fellow performers.

Your feelings are nicely expressed.
John prine comments are some of the best on the internet
This album, and particularly this song, saved my life. Sounds exaggerated, but it is that simple.
John has helped me along, and he still does
Me too

Your words moved me. Stay honest with yourself, if not, you're not really living, you're just passing time. Take care, man.
