  • How to change a rear wheel bearing without buying an expensive $120 wheel bearing separator tool kit. I make my own out of a large 6" bolt and coupling nut (and some washers).
To remove the wheel hub from the old bearing, I used the large bearing separator as a backing plate and some replacement lug stud bolts to press it out. In hind sight, I wish I had just borrowed a slide hammer from my local auto store. I would have resulted in fewer trips to the hardware store and saved me from messing up the threads in the wheel hub. But I learned a lot from that experience.
    The tools I used are:
A large bearing separator from Harbor Freight
Two M14x1.5 50mm bolts from Home Depot
    36mm 12-point socket from Sears
    E-Torx sockets from Harbor Freight
3/4-10 6-inch hex bolt from Home Depot
3/4-10 coupling nut from Home Depot
1" washer and 2 7/8" washers from Home Depot
    Good luck!
