I was 15 then, and am 26 now. It has been a long journey with Paramore and it's amazing to grow up with Hayley's adventure with the band.

I'm pretty sure Hayley said the song was about someone in the band during an interview. And light bulbs are the signal for thought. I think the light is supposed to signify the guys being ignorant by not having the light on them and that she isn't ignorant

When this song was new, I remember watching the music video with my older brother. My older brother who had thirteen years on me. My older brother who was and is a deeply queerphobic religious fundamentalist. One of those guys who listens to Christian metal and thinks that being a bigot is punk. I emulated him for a long time. To my shame he passed his queerphobia on to me and so as a young teenager I embraced his horrible beliefs. But slowly I managed to escape the worldview he helped instill in me. A decade after this song came out, only about two months removed, I confided in him that I was atheist now. He started to pull away from me. Eventually he went completely silent on me for a year and a half. During that year and a half I came to realize I'm trans. He decided unexpectedly to show up to this past Thanksgiving. I informed him that I was planning on starting hrt in 2023. His answer was to tell me nonchalantly and in no uncertain terms that he would not allow me to see his kids then. Specifically because he didn't want them growing to have any affection for a queer person, not even a family member. I say all that to say this song has a completely new meaning for me now than it did in 2009. Kind of uncanny how perfect the lyrics are actually, given this story. Makes it all the more meaningful to me.

I got to know them in 2007 with Riot, fell in love with that album, the previous one and then this came out and I fell in love all over again, this is my favorite paramore song by far... I was 20yo, coming out of my teenage years, middle of my nursing degree, living alone 300km away from home. This album blasted on my ipod every single day ❤
