The main issue with this comparison is that it matches settings rather than *sounds*. Pot and component variability, even between two gold Klons or two Ikons, can lead to somewhat different sound with identical settings. Use a looper and match the two sonically…when you do this you should find they're as identical as goldangit. (I've done it, BTW.)
I've played many klon centaur pedals (silver, gold, manhorse and no manhorse) and they have all sounded a bit different so to compare a klone to the original can only make sense when comparing the same klon that they used to base the klone sound from. Imo
Judging klons is all about the mids. NO ONE has gotten the mids/low mids right yet. I personally like the sound of the archer better but they do not sound anywhere near the same. The Klon has that low mid push.
Danthehorse Not with finer points of balance like this. It's a subtle match of the feel and behaviour and the sound. You can't EQ your way out of subtle dynamic behaviours that are as much about how the pedal responds to pick attack, how it "sticks" to the fingers and how it sustains and dies off across the spectrum.
shnobel 'm from Brazil , very short their videos play already a while , I'm now riding one set 's pedals ! .and your videos help a lot congratulations! continue with this work , always divided his knowledge with us. I have a doubt in this new world of the pedals ! " and so much delay ," which ta until a knot head I like the style as Steve goes, Joe Satriani , SRV , David Gilmour and others which Delay would you advise me to buy ?.
Hi, Both pedals are great sounding. Nice grain, with a great organic feeling. It sounds like the original klon is a bit lows/mediums friendly or slightly more darker or compressed with more harmonics. But both are fantastic. It seems that both of these pedals created also some buzz that's odd.. Or maybe the buzz came from another part of the sound chain... Is the archer ikon true bypass?
Output levels didn't seem to be quite matched. Moreover, you are not going to be playing alone. So the question is : how will it sound with other instruments? Though the Klon was warmer alone, it may be muddy tin the mix.
The Archer seems more high mids to me. A bit more raw. It might cut more in a mix. But the Klon is just immediately well rounded and projects a fullness that's not just about more low end and low mids ...
Why did the Centaur become so valued? Is it really the only way Jeff Beck sounded like Jeff Beck? He could have picked some other pedal and the same thing presumably would happen.
Very close indeed, it appears to me that the Archer has a bit less gain than the original at its maximum settings. Shnobel, would you say that the Ikon is the closest clon to the original?
wow, there's still a BIG difference in tone for me between the two. The Archer sound thinner and a little quackier. The Klon has a nice low thump with really rich overtones. Is it really that hard to clone a Klon exactly? I mean, this comparison sounds like two totally different pedals for me even if the diods should be the same. I would buy the archer within a second if it comes 90% close to the original Klon but this one... sorry, nice try, nice color but not worth it.
I feel like he is using the pedals incorrectly. With a mid hump overdrive like a Klon or Tubescreamer, you need to be going into an amp on the edge of breakup. Unless you are stacking pedals, you generally put the output around 3pm and the drive round 9am. There are many ways to get a good sound, but you will rarely see anyone use this type of pedal with the output low and the gain high. For most, that is an example of how not to use an overdrive.

100% Correct on this observation.
Exactly what I was about to say. You get a real comparison.
look at the treble setting. I think setting the ikon a little darker would bring them closer
Really dig the Rimrock Mythical Overdrive

***** nailed it ;)
***** Good EQ pedal would even things up, be useful for much else too.
***** I'd bet no two gold Klons would sound alike either.
Danthehorse

Bit close to warrant a few grand.

They sound rather different to me. The Klon seems warmer and bigger, with more mids. But the Archer isn't bad either ;-)

Roman, could you make a shootout between the MP Sweet Honey and the Archers by Rockett? Or even the SH and the Klon?
Why did the Centaur become so valued? Is it really the only way Jeff Beck sounded like Jeff Beck? He could have picked some other pedal and the same thing presumably would happen.
Did you have the Klon running into the Ikon? These are buffered pedals, one pedal is going color the other.
great comparison but still love my Boss BD2, through a AC15 ..heaven
mmm... Thought it would be a lot closer than this......
Ikon + EQ pedal
D P3 now 10 times less, welcome to 2018 folks
@@burninglcd Welcome to 2022 Klon is 5K Ikon is 150 Ikon ALL day !!!!!!
@@rickw5024 ugh this is sad
Archer sounding a bit thin in comparison
THE KLON just seems to have more presence. like those other guys say more low mid push
Very close indeed, it appears to me that the Archer has a bit less gain than the original at its maximum settings.

espinela Do your homework, bro.
I like the snap of the Archer a bit more.

Klon sounds creamier and little bit thicker sounding but they are close.
We need a Timmy vs Klon

Maybe it needs more Doubly ?
Definitely! Played on amp that goes to eleven!....ya know, for when you need that extra
two word review : Shit Sandwich
Voicing is close enough to frame it with an EQ and get whatever you want
Gonna stick with my Retroman DumBox. Nothing touches it.
Yeah, more low mids in granddaddy, dont think the Archer's treble could fix that. I place the Archer between the Soul Food and Mr. Goldie.
The Archer sounds a bit thin in comparison to the legendary Klon, nothing compares or beats the Klon. But the J Rockett is a great pedal
I have an Archer Ikon and it is sick!! A meat factory! For $189.00 you can't go wrong!
if you EQ it properly they will both sound the same...
The Klon does sound slightly better to me, but £3000 better no way , I’d still buy the Klon if I won the Euro lottery though 😄
Klon makes the Archer sound weak
Klon is much more open sounding
Ikon has more definition.
Sorry Shnobel. You're good, but the following is still the greatest Klon comparison video of all time:

archer more dry than klon
