Spectacular video, thank you. I've known about this climb for ages, and can't believe someone finally recorded it. Thanks for taking on these lesser known but insane climbs and documenting them for us. If you're ever in Switzerland again, I can recommend Alpe Galm or Sankt Antönien as options to film. Incredible, little known climbs.
Mike - your videos have always had a special energy, a reverence for the place and for the sport of cycling. Many years on since watching your first video, it's great to see you still making these masterpieces. Bravo Mike. Keep doing your awesome thing, it's great. Edit: Did you stay at the top that night after the climb? No way you descended in the dark. The night sky from the summit...I hope you laid there for hours watching it without getting too cold.
Another beautiful video. I can't imagine doing anything like this. But then again, I'm old enough to be Michael's dad. At the same time, I certainly couldn't do anything approaching this climb even when I was his age. Inspiring in so many ways. I love this channel!!
Brilliant video. I did this climb in April 2024, it’s an absolute beast and I had to stop and push a few times. I bet any of my strong cycling mates beer for a year if they could ride the whole thing without stopping 😀🙏
What an insane climb and an insane effort, Mike! This topped them all in terms of difficulty packed in a relatively short distance. Still not sure how you stayed upright at 1-3 mph, much less were able to talk. You are definitely a beast on the bike! Well done!
Ugh! I'm tired and tired and tired. My sofa is completely overheated just for watching you. This hill is for an out-of-body experience. Congratulations Mike! Fantastic!!!
Great job! Few have done this climb and it is great to give it the notoriety it deserves. It is one of the hardest climbs in the world I have ever done and I hope that other's get the opportunity to travel to the Canary Islands and take on this beast.
Thanks! I was just about to get onto the trainer for another round of (virtual) climbing. Had to postpone when I saw that you shared a new video! Now, I'm even more motivated! And NO, I wouldn't be able to do 31%, I'd fall off backwards.
Well done Mike, every time I see that concrete surface it means one thing: suffering. What a ride and journey - the edit is epic too, doing that solo was incredible! 🙌
Exactly. The wrinkled concrete is a sure sign you’re in for a hard ride! Thanks for your appreciation, pulling this together solo was quite the challenge!
@@TheColCollective 100%, I do some videos on my own (nothing comparable to yours though!) and for sure I can understand the effort of pulling this out solo. I can see lots of hours invested in doing it but the final outcome is fantastic so thanks again for sharing it 🙏
Mike you are a Beast! and The G.O.A.T! Many thanks for another fabulous video, so much work in it, what a piece of art, your poetic soul in every picture. You even make this particular area ok....aside from the coast, it does look like an environmental disaster! I hope you are feeling better, best wishes of health, sending you vibes of strength. Take care, and thank you again.
Thank you, Mike. Long time follower of your channel. Ever so glad when I see you have posted a new "adventure". I have done quite a few of the Pyrenean and Alpine climbs that you have had on the channel. However, soon to enter my 9th decade I think I'll give Animas a pass.
This was crazinness Mike! They shot up to 30%, it was essential to adapt a more appropriate geometry of the gravel style frame. The beautiful island, beautiful places with its astronomical viewpoints and its steep caves by Mother Nature;)
Well done Mike !! 👏👏👏 I've been living on this wonderful island for five years, but I've never ridden the ascent of Llano de las Ánimas, one of those where you really stake your soul. 😵💫 Mike's choice of a gravel bike was excellent for both the metric development of the ratios and the width of the tyres., but given the lethal gradients a MTB would also have been suitable. 🚲😉 In any case, the island offers even more brutal ascents in certain sections, albeit shorter ones. El Tablado, Las Cabezadas, are two of the steepest rough concrete climbs, with peaks of over 30% (impossible to asphalt them, too narrow and steep). 😲
What a climb! Having followed in your Pyrenean footsteps quite a few times as you know this one leaves me speechless. Pic du Midi and Refuge de la Gliere were hard enough - not sure i am brave or good enough to follpw you here.....lol.
You’re very welcome and thank you for your appreciation towards the production quality. I can’t even begin to explain how hard it is to try and film these climbs without a second or third pair of hands to help ease the load.
Muchachos is super beautiful made hard by its length and something you’d likely repeat. Ánimas is one of those climbs you kinda want to do but afterwards you’re like “yep, enough is enough”.
Simply an amazing climb! Yes, you are definitely insane for doing this climb. However, we do appreciate your effort. As always your video is stunning and don't make us wait so long for the next one.
Great question. I think Animas is the hardest road climb and Nebelhorn the hardest climb overall. I tried riding Nebelhorn on the same gravel bike and literally couldn’t turn the pedals!! The off-road adds another element again!
Hi Mike. Great video once again. Quick question: I see you have a 2x set up on your Cannondale. Is this a preference over a 1x setup and if so what is your reasoning. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed the video! For the gearing my only rational was that it’s what was on the bike I had with me in La Palma! I’d have gladly taken a 1 x setup for a lower gear or even my MTB had I had it with me! 😅
Absolutely! I met an astronomer up there with a telescope who let me see some of the distant planets. Would have never had that experience if I hadn't grovelled up Animas!
Another crazy adventure! Don't know what's more scary, the brutal ascent or the possibly neck-breaking descent, especially in totally exhausted condition. One should better start earlier to not have to descend after sunset. ;)
I doubt going down off it was a whole load of fun either ! What is at the top actually some sort of viewing point or some sort of thing the farmers make use of ?
Oh yeah speaking of obscure climbs, Superbagnéres is back for a TDF mtn finish. After I watched your video a few years ago I went and climbed it. Should be an epic finish 👍🏔️

Big thanks Adam!! Hope you enjoyed the vid!
I don't think I want to do this climb! Chapeau!
Thank you so much for your support Paul. You’re obviously a lot smarter than me opting out of this climb!! 😅
Thanks!

I reckon you’re pretty safe with that bet!!!! I filmed this in April so we must’ve been pretty close to each other! 🤩
Congrats, one of your best shot and edited videos. To film it and do the climb is amazing. After watching, it’s not on my bucket list.
Thanks so much Kevin! Good luck when you tackle this beast. You can do it!! 💪🏼

Thanks for your appreciation. I think I’ve somehow honed the skill of grovelling up a hill one handed with a camera in hand 😅
The fact that you can do that and also talk, while suffering up a 30% incline is just SO impressive!
Breathing out of my rear end! 🤣
I couldn't handle even riding down that climb!!! Amazing! Big thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!!

There was one scene where you could really see how steep this climb is. Looked like a 65* angle.
Unreal and a stellar effort Mike !
Cheers Peat! On some parts you look up and immediately think “is this actually for real??” Bonkers climb!
Incredible. The ride, the effort, the scenery, the skies and the climb! My lungs and legs were hurting in sympathy at the 25-31% sections. Chapeau sir
Thanks for tuning in and your support!! 🐮
Chapeau fella ! Getting your breath back on 15% HARDCORE !
15% felt strangely easy in comparison 😅

Awesome and inspiring video as always Mike, thanks for sharing with us these amazing climbs!

Glad you enjoyed the video! Definitely won’t be as long to wait until the next vid!
Congratulations🎉, finally a new video 😊. A big like before watching. You made my day.
Thank you for watching!!!!
Fantastic video ! That climb looked absolutely brutal, fair play for getting to the top 💪
Was a real struggle that one! Worth it for the views!!
Very cool Video. Thank you very much for the impressions
Glad you like them!
Good job, Mike! From one of the 4, now 5.
Great Video. Congrats for always entertaining. I can feel your pain and your accomplishment.
Thanks for tuning in! 🌋
Fantastic video (and effort ) Mike … I’m happy if you want to stick to the more beautiful climbs with easier gradients 😂
Hats off mate!
Good to know!!! 😅
huge congrats for this ascent! great job!!!
Thanks for tuning in!!
Men the video editing is so much qualitative!
Thank you, it’s a massive workload to film and edit solo. Glad you appreciate it 🙏🏻
Excellent
I think my ánima would depart before I get to the llano if I tried to ride this "climb" 🙂. Brutal, but inspiring as always Mike!
Was an absolute beast Pablo! Hope you’re well?
Cool that you are doing some of the more niche, yet more extreme climbs. Pjamm has a great data base on insane stuff like this!
Cheers Lars! Yep Pjamm is a great resource!
@@TheColCollective cool that they’ve also commented on this video. Some of my favorite sources of cycling inspiration convene!

Nice to a new video from you, I always enjoy your content … how did this one compare to the Nebelhorn?
Great question. I think Animas is the hardest road climb and Nebelhorn the hardest climb overall. I tried riding Nebelhorn on the same gravel bike and literally couldn’t turn the pedals!! The off-road adds another element again!
Fantastic. Thanks.
You’re welcome Robert!
Liking the gravel bike Mike. What model is that ? Great vid by the way
It’s the EVO SE. Happy you enjoyed the vid too! 🐮
Absoluetly Insane Mike , you absolute Lunatic HAHA Chapeau ,How did you get back down ?Helicopter?
Slow ride down in the dark after some well deserved star gazing 🌟
Hi Mike. Great video once again. Quick question: I see you have a 2x set up on your Cannondale. Is this a preference over a 1x setup and if so what is your reasoning. Thanks.

Amazing! Did you ride back down with new brake pads? It looked crazy hard going up, but coming back down would scare the heck out of me.
Definitely had to be cautious on the way back down!
If it weren't for your videos as proof, we average mortals wouldn't be able to call you "the man, the myth - the legend"! Well done Mike . . .
You’re too kind by half ☺️
Well done, the stars at the top make it worth it.
Absolutely! I met an astronomer up there with a telescope who let me see some of the distant planets. Would have never had that experience if I hadn't grovelled up Animas!
That looks absolutely savage
An absolute beast Dave!! Kept saying to myself “is this actually for real?” 😅
Bad ass climb!
You’re right there!!
Two things I learned from this video; 1. Never do this climb and 2. Schedule a vacation in La Palma.
You are absolutely right with both of those points. Can’t recommend La Palma enough! Ánimas on the other hand 🙄
i see a new col collective video, i watch
Thank you so much!! 🐮
Another crazy adventure! Don't know what's more scary, the brutal ascent or the possibly neck-breaking descent, especially in totally exhausted condition. One should better start earlier to not have to descend after sunset. ;)
Yes, I definitely recommend finishing before sunset. Takes me a loooong time to ride and film so often have a nice sunset to enjoy before darkness 😅
@@TheColCollective Must all fit together. Looks also count. And it looks great! 👍
😊
Jeez, that looked seriously tough. As I was on my absolute limit on the Angliru I think I'll give it a miss 😀
Angliru is a beast, Ánimas somehow seems to up the challenge once again! Bonkers insane ascent!
What a monster effort Mr. Mike, chapeau mate 🦵💪🦵💪
Just a question, what gear were you using??
I was on 33x36. Would highly recommend lower. MTB gearing or even a MTB is the way on this one!! Easier on the way up and down!
@TheColCollective in Spain when you see that concrete roads, you know it's going to be steep 🦵💪

Uhh, breathtaking!!! Hope, you had descent not on the bike
Glad you liked it! As I was filming on my own with no support I had a pretty sketchy descent back down in the dark. Worth it though!

I know I keep bugging you about this, but how about filming the descent as well.
It was pretty dark by the top. This descent didn’t have a lot of flow, just a case of going steady all the way.
😮 congratulation riding that spot !, but the ketones surely will not help you :-))
I’m not sure anything can help when the gradient is that steep! 😅
