Super cool! I was talking to a local that organised the running race up Nebelhorn. Epic mountain!! Wry happy the video brought back good memories to you 🙏🏻
What a performance😊 this is truely amazing. Just a few kilometers away from the Nebelhorn is the way up to 'Alpe Schlappold'. It starts next to the Skiflying Hill 'Heini Klopfer Flugschanze'. It's 7km long, gradient about 12% and it is really beautiful but highly exhausting. The road is in acceptable condition, mostly made of tarmac, there is no gravel. The landscape is a dream...have you heard of this climb?
Oh nice, that's where I am from :) I walked up there a few times, but never saw someone go up there by bike, respect! Usually, I go there in night time, so I have the peak to myself at sunset, when the cablecar is not running yet. Can get really crowded up there. And most times, I choose another way down, because of the surface: road, gravel... not great to walk on. Once in winter, I got my sled with me and went down with it, before all the skier and snowboarder even had a chance to come up :D
I did the exact same route on foot with my brother in september of last year. We started from oberstdorf at 9:40 in the morning, and we arrived at the summit 4 hours later. 1 hour of that in total was made up of us sitting around catching our breath. Even on foot the steepest sections where you are going up on both gravel and tarmac were difficult to navigate because every time you put your weight on the back foot to step forward it would slip on the rocks. At some points I think we were questioning why we didn't just take the cable car up, but finally standing below the summit cross, taking in the view and knowing that we were one of the few people there who had actually walked up the entire way was oh so worth it :) We thought about walking down again, but with how steep some of those sections were and with the gravel we were sure that we were going to take a bad fall on the way down so we opted to take the cable car, which was 28€ (!) per person, even though we both already got the students discount, which I thought was a very steep price (haha). I think it's an insane idea to try and go up the Nebelhorn with a bicycle and I definitely would've thought it to be impossible if I hadn't seen this video, amazing work!
Thanks for sharing your journey! Big respect!! Very sensible taking the cable car down. I saw many hikers slipping over as they descended, it’s so loose and easy to lose one’s footing. By the time I finished it was dark so I had to navigate the descent by head torch. Was very relived to make it down ok. What an adventure!!!! 😊
Going down is even worse, I would not recommend. Did it twice. Fortunately, there are various beautiful hiking trails to get up there and back down again.
@traumiweber6600 definitely, I went uphill by bike last summer and wanted to go downhill by cable car, but it's not allowed to take a bike within the cable car. It was quite horrifying to constantly having to apply the breaks, but not so strong that the bike gets into slipping over all the loose gravel under the chairlift above the traverse. In my opinion the section between 1500 and 1932m is more a hiking trail, which can be "rode" on a bike by a "stop-and-go" method. The most fun is when people look for the route in komoot, komoot lists that section as 100% tarmac. There have been people which showed up at the start of the section with a road or a gravelbike and instantly regretted it, it's impossible to get over the loose gravel with road or gravel tires let alone the gear ratios of road bikes.
@@GatlingJackDEI haven't done this climb, but I love how the people take a look at your crankset to see if you have an ebike and look back up in amazement^^
Hi Mike, I appreciate your new video style. Still motivating, but breathing when talking and peddling 300 Watt is more familiar to what I know, just pushing an av. of 150 Watt during the day -:). I train on my wahoo for the ventoux and other rides to come, inspirited by so many of your videos. Like the Bordères, Soulor & Aubisque. Thank you for your work and the love you put into it. Greetings from a neighbor of Oberstdorf. 👋
I got up there on my road bike with road tyres, so slowly my garmin didnt even record I was moving ! if your ever over that way the area of saxon switzerland south of Dresden has some stunning climbs shorter but sharp ! and then a ncie flat river cycle track to recover.
It’s crazy steep. If you lose traction it’s over, like walking a tight rope. One slip and you’re gone. Saw many walkers slip over coming down too. Never seen anything like it! 😬
Big congratulations 👏👍 I did it in 2001 til höfatsblick 2100m a.s.l. without pushing the bike online biking. And I felt very bad for one week. It is crazy steep. You cannot bike down. You have to go. Never pushing the mtb Andi
I know that route, cause I rode it myself last summer. To put some water into the wine of the video here. I see a break after you passed the traverse in the middle of the serpentine section. It's also not sure if you had to get off the bike in the only gravel parts of the way. Multiple turns were shot by an outside camera which seems to be moved each shot. Meaning the rider must make additional breaks every time he moved the outside camera to different turns. To conclude: That you "made" that route at all in the first place is an achievement, but it's not a so-called "red-point completion". Only a few riders in comparison have made that route by bike, but it's important to mention that the route is including this video here only "achieved" with multiple breaks and getting off the saddle. It's an "achievement" but not that kind of an "achievement" it is made here in the describing text of this video. It's still not proven that someone made the ascent without ANY break from 1540m (just before the turn to the 35% ascent beside the mountain creek) all the way up to 1932m (cable car station). Cable Car: bikes are NOT allowed, neither in uphill direction nor in downhill direction. I wanted to take the cable car downhill after I made it uphill with my bike. They said "not allowed". In my opion the route doesn't qualify for a "nonstop bikeroute". In the German speaking bike community it's mainly seen as a "stop-and-go" route which doesn't qualify because it's not possible to make it without any break or stop in it. Some years ago there were a few comments by hotshots, that "you could cycle up the section with roadbike gear ratios without any break" 😂, which of course were the most laughable comments about that section and if it qualifies as a "nonstop biking route". I only can say that it's not fun in any case to ride that section uphill, it's torture. The only way one can prove he or she made it without ANY break would be a completely uncut video from 1540m to the 1932m showing a person cycling uphill without any kind of getting off the bike, no matter if it's caused by loosing grip within the gravel or sheer exhaustion. Up to this point in time such a proving video doesn't exist in RUclips. Therefore those two top climbing points of Germany which have been proved to be makeable without any kind of getting off the bike are: Osterfelderkopf 2032m by mountainbike and Alpe Schlappold 1740m by roadbike
Thanks so much for the comments and valuable feedback, especially regarding bikes not being allowed on the cable car. I had no choice on the day as it was deserted at the summit and the cable car had stopped for the day so only one way down…..by bike. With regards to riding the serpentine section to Hofatsblick without stopping, prior to filming this video I made two attempts to familiarise myself with the climb. The first was on my gravel bike with 33x36 as the lowest gear. I was grinding such a low cadence at times it was faster to walk 😅. My second attempt was on my mountain bike with 52t rear cassette so a much lower gear which is highly, highly, recommended. I remember on that attempt riding the steepest sections up to Hofatsblick (1932m) without dismounting. This is where most riders finish the ascent but I continued up to the summit at 2224m. This last section is pretty rough in places but still rideable. I remember clearing all the steepest sections without dismounting but on an “easier” section (I put that in inverted commas as it was still a hard section) I lost traction and had to put a foot down. Such a shame as I’d hoped to ride the whole thing but I wasn’t going to go back to attempt it again at full speed (I was chasing the KOM on that attempt). So although I put a foot down in the section from Hofatsblick to the summit I know it’s possible to ride it all with the right gearing, pace, legs and a bit of good luck! The third ascent was for the video. I filmed everything solo, so had to stop multiple times to capture each shot, drone, static and POV shots. It’s why I arrived at sunset, self filming takes a very long time and riding up with a bag full of cameras and equipment was a lot harder than my Strava attempt despite taking about 6 hours longer! 😅 An absolute beast of a climb! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did! 💪🏼
@@TheColCollective Ah okay, I see now how the video was made in that style. So you're 2nd attempt with 52t cassette mountainbike is definitely an EPIC and very special achievement 🙌👍 I started with a 51t shimano XT cassette hardtail. I had to take like four breaks within the serpentine section. I wasn't fit enough to clear it without them and in hindsight I had not the right fitting tires. I had crossbike like tires, which weren't "full" mountainbike tires. I'm thinking about trying it again sometime in the future, but that would require me a kind of specific practice for that section. With my "regular" training routines I wouldn't be fit enough to make it without several breaks and I underestimated the huge and constant amount of gravel in the upper section. All in all I found it to be a very exciting experience. But totally different from "classic" and well-known biking routes in the alps. It's just not a "pleasure ride" where you kind of moderately cranking uphill while looking to the side easily and enjoying nature. I wouldn't recommend the route at all if someone is looking for just such a classic and well-makeable route. In this sense I don't see it as a regular "biking route" rather a specific and extreme challenge in uphill bike climbing. In comparison with other extreme uphill routes from other youtube videos my guess is that it could be arguably the most difficult one, because of the combination of extreme steepness and the extensive gravel which gets more and more going uphill to the cable car station. Of course there are a few other extreme steep ramp routes, but as far as I know not combined with such a lot of gravel on the surface. Meaning standing up and cranking is impossible on most of the serpentine section.
awesome! Did you ride the Grüntenhütte? It's nearby in the Allgäuer Alps and also has some very steep gradients. Daniel Friebe wrote about it in Mountain Higher.
Are you from England??? Do you know the Hardknott Pass? I have a video of the Lake District on my Tacx Home Trainer. Yes, the south of Germany is perfect for biking. (Black Forest, Allgäu, and in the east Berchtesgaden, (Eagles Nest) Königsee. There is a lot to see.

What an impressive effort and a stunning vid! Thanks for showing this one. I was wondering how you made it back, because night is coming in very fast in the Alps and with the rout it does not look like something you do in the night. Did you stay for the night up there? Love all the workouts with you at Wahoo System and they always get me, even when I am looking for some relaxing ride, it is hard to resist to go on a ride with you.
Thank you for your appreciation, happy you enjoyed the video! I made it just before sunset, unfortunately there’s no lodging up there and no bikes on the cable car (they were closed anyway). So my only option was to ride back down in the dark, definitely not recommended!!! Stay tuned for more On Location videos, including a series from Bavaria! ☺️
Thanks for your appreciation! Downhill was tricky to say the least, had to go very cautiously on the steepest sections. They are very loose and in the dark, well everything is more scary right? 😬
@@TheColCollective oh yeah, and that's the whole package... we'vve been on holiday there in 2022 and my son is 12 years old now....he'd love to do that ride this summer. 😀
Hi, I am curious if you notice any sign that indicates motorbikes are not allowed on the road? I am planning to ride until the 'mittelstation' then take the lift. Do you think is that allowed ?
When I was in my running prime in 2005, I ran up the Nebelhorn from Oberstdorf- and back down. I reached the summit after 1:44 hours, and I had the worst cramps of my life on my run down 🙈😂 cramping hip muscles are no fun at all… So, while these ramps a good challenge for any trained individual, I very much doubt it’s the hardest climb in Germany.
Phenomenal effort, well done Mike! It must have been hard, you got off a few times which I'd never seen you do before lol. Stunning video too, thanks for posting it :-) What was the descent like?

🤩
That looks like a nice rewarding challenge. Onto my bucket list it goes 😁
It’s a huge challenge. Low, low, gears are crucial!!! Good luck!! 💪🏼
35% 👏 nice work, enjoyed the mtb content 👌
Super happy you enjoyed it! First video on the MTB! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Really Great Job. Respect for this Climb! 👍🤙
Thank you!!!! 🐮
Thank you so much for your message! So great to hear! Looking forward to bringing more vids out soon 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
this came up as a suggestion. Amazing video. 34t front chainring!?! and 20+ % grade. Well done.
Thanks for your appreciation David! Road just kept getting steeper and steeper!! Certainly needed the MTB gearing when it hit 34%!! 😬
Fabulous video Mike!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
The reaction of the hiker when he saw you climbing up - unpriceable!
A big kudos for mastering this epic climb!
It’s super slippery on that section. In fact you see the hiker almost lose his footing, fortunately they stayed upright!
priceless*, there is no such word as "unpriceable".
I got up there on my road bike with road tyres, so slowly my garmin didnt even record I was moving ! if your ever over that way the area of saxon switzerland south of Dresden has some stunning climbs shorter but sharp ! and then a ncie flat river cycle track to recover.
Well done and thanks for the tip off on those short sharp Swiss climbs. 🙏🏻
Absolute insanity... Chapeau for that one!
Pure insanity in a mountain! 🤪
Insane! I couldn't even walk that 😵💫
Iove your vids Mike 🙏
It’s crazy steep. If you lose traction it’s over, like walking a tight rope. One slip and you’re gone. Saw many walkers slip over coming down too. Never seen anything like it! 😬
That decent looks worse than the climb itself!
Yeah, it was tricky getting down!!
Much prefer the cable car and then skiing down it haha. Great effort, I always wondered what it looked like without snow.
Cable car is a fantastic option!!!! 😅
Big congratulations 👏👍
I did it in 2001 til höfatsblick 2100m a.s.l. without pushing the bike online biking. And I felt very bad for one week. It is crazy steep. You cannot bike down. You have to go.
Never pushing the mtb Andi
Huge respect Andi! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Congrats Mike. If anyone could do it, you could. Not much left to conquer . Thanks.KB
Thanks Ken! The search continues!! 💪🏼
Great bike climb and mountains.
Bavaria blew me away! 🤩
Incompatible with life. Chapeau !
😂
Nice Lefty, very well done, you didn’t manage to show quite how hard it was though…I suspect there aren’t many rider who can manage that….well done
Meaning the rider must make additional breaks every time he moved the outside camera
to different turns.
To conclude:
That you "made" that route at all in the first place is an achievement, but it's not a so-called
"red-point completion".
Only a few riders in comparison have made that route by bike, but it's important to mention
that the route is including this video here only "achieved" with multiple breaks and getting off the saddle.
It's an "achievement" but not that kind of an "achievement" it is made here in the describing text of this video.
It's still not proven that someone made the ascent
without ANY break
from 1540m (just before the turn to the 35% ascent beside the mountain creek) all the way up to 1932m (cable car station).
Therefore those two top climbing points of Germany which have been proved to be makeable without any kind of getting off the bike are:
Osterfelderkopf 2032m by mountainbike and
Alpe Schlappold 1740m by roadbike
An absolute beast of a climb! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did! 💪🏼
@@TheColCollective Ah okay, I see now how the video was made in that style.
So you're 2nd attempt with 52t cassette mountainbike is definitely an EPIC and very special achievement 🙌👍
I started with a 51t shimano XT cassette hardtail.
Way to go bro, kudos to you, it was a real pleasure to watch this video
Thanks for watching! Super happy you enjoyed it!! 👊🏼
Mike, you're always a star, but for once I can say you sounded like me clipping my toe nails!😅
Congrats Mike, well done . . .
😅 Yeah, that was a toughie, just like clipping the nails! 😜
awesome! Did you ride the Grüntenhütte? It's nearby in the Allgäuer Alps and also has some very steep gradients. Daniel Friebe wrote about it in Mountain Higher.
Not this time, but sounds like the perfect reason for another trip!!
@@TheColCollective I did the climb to Grüntenhütte with my roadbike ( 34/28 !! )
Whoaaaaaaa! 😯
Great video Mike 👍🏻😎
Thank you!! 🙏🏻
Now THAT'S climbing. I have a 35% grade section of trail built on my property, and it's 100% mind and gut getting up. But I'm at sea level.
You know the feeling! It’s like climbing a wall!!!! Just had to keep grinding and grinding and grinding!
What a climb!
absolutely bonkers but fantastic at the same time Lol
Bonkers at the time, fantastic after. Definitely type 2 fun! 🤩
Nice challange :) If you want another serious challange try to ride Scanuppia :)
Ooooh yeah, it’s on my hit list 😬
@@TheColCollective do not forget good gearing :)
Absolutely!!!! 👍🏼
Yes, I’ve ridden Hardknott, along with Wrynose, proper British beasts! 💪🏼 Loved Bavaria, looking forward to returning one day!

Amazing. The weather and sun surely added 10% more, right?! 😅
Certainly did! Got pretty intense up there!!!!! 💪🏼
I HAVE NO WORDS..........RESPECT!
Thank you kindly 🙏🏻
You have to try the Rauschberg, also in Bavaria but in the east.
Greetings
Thank you for the tip off!!!!
This would be a fantastic MTB or gravel race venue 🤩
Absolutely, the region is spectacular!
real champ. greeting from bad tölz /bavaria
Thank you kindly! 🙏🏻
What a superb video. It really makes me want to go there. Shame about the disgusting muzak though. What's wrong with the sound of tyre on road/gravel?
Glad you enjoyed the video 😊 What was it you didn’t like about the music? Always good to make note of the feedback for next time. 👌🏼
Thanks
Thank you so much for your support! Truly appreciated 🙏🏻🐮
Super epic man 👍😀
Thanks Bob, the hardest yet!!
Great video once a again
Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
Sweet Cannondale Scalpel. Perfect choice.
Definitely the right bike for the job this time!! 🤙🏼
@@TheColCollective really looking forward to what is coming. Happy you made it back save and sound!
I did it on Skis in winter during covid....did actually the top section twice ..... veeeery long day.
Super cool!!!!
Really epic and inspiring....great rider and nature love.....but how was the downhill?
Thanks for your appreciation! Downhill was tricky to say the least, had to go very cautiously on the steepest sections. They are very loose and in the dark, well everything is more scary right? 😬
@@TheColCollective oh yeah, and that's the whole package... we'vve been on holiday there in 2022 and my son is 12 years old now....he'd love to do that ride this summer. 😀
Hi, I am curious if you notice any sign that indicates motorbikes are not allowed on the road? I am planning to ride until the 'mittelstation' then take the lift. Do you think is that allowed ?
WOW that's all I can say and also, truly, theirs nowt like a Mike Cotty Col Collective film 🙏😎

Thank you Mike you are a great inspiration to all cyclist many thanks for all past videos and new ones to come
Thank you so much for your message, truly appreciated. 🙏🏻
Well done for your effort on Nebelhorn 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@TheColCollective Thanks! The good old days… I‘m far from that shape today, ruptured my Achilles tendon in 2006 and never really recovered
😢
Perfect and brilliant.
Big thank you 🙏🏻
Hi Mike ,you are a monster climber . So glad to see you in Germany . You rocking the race hardtail . Best regards from cologne
Did a test on the gravel bike but was grinding an impossibly slow cadence. MTB for the win!! 🏆
I guess some locals have to cycle this daily to get to their office ... kidding ... excellent achievement, greatest respect.
😂😂😂
Phenomenal effort, well done Mike! It must have been hard, you got off a few times which I'd never seen you do before lol. Stunning video too, thanks for posting it :-) What was the descent like?
Timed my recovery stops to do some filming 🤫 Descent was super sketchy as I had to do it on the dark! 🤦🏼
@@TheColCollective Well it certainly made for a fantastic video - a work of art! Glad you made it down safely. You must have been able to fry a few eggs on the disc rotors!
! @benben-my1rk Oh yes, those rotors were well and truly heat treated!!
Fooking hell man. Well done.
Thanks for your appreciation 🙏🏻
What’s more terrifying is to go back down it on those sharp steep bends and gravel forget it you’d be a goner for sure
Absolutely!! Got to take maximum caution, especially in the dark 😬
Awesome, thanks😊
You're welcome 😊
