Saturday night double feature! Don't miss the 223 video I posted along with this one: ruclips.net/video/Kwamhc5Do68/видео.html
The 300 blackout series sure is lonely! What's the status of testing Puflon in subsonic loads?
Not Your Average Joe 300BO lonely? He's done 72 videos on that horrible round. I'd say he's beaten that dead horse as much as he could/should.
Johnny's Reloading Bench I love the Grendel cartridge, but I've found that it is a little more finicky with heavier bullets in the AR platform than in the bolt actions! My Howa mini bolt and Ruger American Predator will shoot almost all heavy (130+gr) loads with decent accuracy, while my ARs I really need to find the "sweet spot" with powder weight/COAL to get them to shoot decent groups.
I also personally avoid ALL CCI primers like the plague. I run Federal GM205M (not the AR version, the standard match) or the Remington 7 1/2BR primers for accuracy loads. I've found them to be the best in my guns with my loads so far. I tried the CCI BR4 primers even and didn't find them to be as good in my loads as the other two match/BR primers.
jimhans1 Haters are just going to hate -lol. It was 300 blackout that kicked his channel off, it must be good for something. Lol
Not Your Average Joe I still love 300 Blackout and I'll be doing more in the future. Just too many things going on right now. 300 Blackout is a ton of fun and it's a great short range deer cartridge. Free/cheap brass, cheap bullets, cheap powder charges, subsonics that cycle...I'd still recommend it to anyone as long as they understand what they're getting. It's got a permanent home on this channel.
Holy shit. I'm legitimaty the first person watching this. As I sit at my bench priming 277WLV and 7mm08.
I just glad to see someone with the passion in the 6.5 Grendel that I do. Thanks for doing this. I had been wanting to try this to the point that I have 200 140 grain ELD Hornaday but no choice on powder yet. I wanted to try the Vihta Vuori for awhile now but can only find it for about $45 a bottle.
Finally another video.lol.... my days are boring since I have watched all of your videos... KEEP EM COMING
I’m just super stoked to see two videos in one day. Thank you Johnny!
All results are useful. Waiting on the edge of my seat for the harmonics videos. I’ve been interested in this effect since the Browning BOSS system was released.
Love seeing more Grendel! I'm sticking with the cartridge for hunting.
I have been using VV powders for almost all my reloading. And the N5XX powders are like this, they tend to give great velocity but the accuracy is out of the window.
For the 6.5x55 the N160 was best for accuracy but N560 was for velocity. You could get 300 FPS more with heavy bullets without much cruncyness.
for the grendel i have mainly used the n540 for velocity in 140 grain bullets, mainly for hunting where ranges are low (150m at most) and targets are relatively large.
N140 is much better suited if you want a combination of speed and precision.
I starting playing with the 6.5 Grendel about a month ago . Bca 18" heavy fluted stainless barrel . I have the same problems with groups going from sub moa with a can to almost 3 moa without . I have limited local access as to component selection . So it is nice to see someone else trying different combos . I have had the best results so far with Hornady Black 123gr "factory loads " . Since I have a 1/8 twist I am going to give these 140gr bullets a try . So far it seems to like the heavier bullets for this caliber .
Anyone ever heard of an 8.6 Creedmoor, this is totally off topic...6.5 Creedmoor case shortened and shooting 300 grain .338 subsonics. It’s like a 6.5CM 300 Blackout thing.
I'll be getting my lee press next month, can't wait to get started.?..
Look forward to the harmonics testing even if it doesn't include the limb saver. I just hope you get the results your looking for.
The week you took me up on the Limbsaver offer i worked 63.5 hours. It was faster to order and have it shipped. Plus only $2 more than shipping alone. Since i knew i couldn't make it to the post office it was the fastest way to get it there.
Hope the new job is working out too. Take care...Wreck-n-Crew
I will definitely be including the limb saver! I really appreciate you sending it! I ended up finding the large size at my local shop and picked one of them up as well, so I'll be testing both. I think the small will work well on the Compass and the large on the Ballistic Advantage Creedmoor barrel. If I had to guess, I think the limb saver will prove to be the best, cheapest, and easiest fix for all this crap. It won't surprise me a bit to see some huge gains with them.
I love this video. I haven't had much luck with 140 grainers in my Alexander Arms Barrel 20 inch. However I haven't tried the N540 and I will now! What has traditionally work for me is XBR WITH SIERRA 123 grain bthp.
My 24" Brownells/Satern barrel loved 123's but this one is a little pickier. The 123 SMK is only okay with the powders I've tested so far. I've got a huge box of them so we'll be returning to them soon enough with the Grendel.
I have been told the main reason a suppressor effects the bullet travel and accuracy is because the gasses and debris keep pushing the bullet after it leaves the barrel. That seems correct, since the powder, gases and particles are traveling much faster than the bullet itself. This pushing happens while the bullet is not supported by the barrel so it can effect the flight path for a short time/space, the suppressor mitigates those effects by capturing this pressure wave and debris.
One might postulate boat tail bullets also help with this turbulence by keeping the pressure off the back of the bullet to some extent.
"Good powder and a good bullet sometimes aren't gonna shoot well" never a truer word spoken, having that exact issue with my custom built 7mm RM with RL22 + ELDX + Norma cases and 71/2M primers :(
I think you’re going to find some very interesting results after all these tests
Hey Johnny let's get the LUMP on the end of that barrel and see what it does
Great video my brother ..keep on keeping on
Keep the grendel coming buddy! Would you consider a howa 1500 6.5 grendel for testing?
I am pretty committed to the AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel, so a Howa is probably not going to happen. I've been looking at some other stuff in the Howa, though. They are all on sale at Brownells right now and it's everything I can do not to buy a couple. I think Full.Lead.Taco has a 6.5 Grendel Howa if you're looking for information. Here's a video of him shooting it: ruclips.net/video/LNNAM8xdG08/видео.html
ya might want to check the clearance between the barrel tennon and receiver(mic both) there may be a bit of slop causing the inaccuracy here a bit of gasket seal should help fill in the gap if there is excessive clearance
Perhapse the supresor stops the gases overtaking the bullet when it leaves the barrel and therefore not affecting stability can i suggest a muzel brake to add to your testing
Great Vids look at Mosin Nagant it has a bullet impact shift without the bayonet ! So Do The Flash Hinder / Muzzle Brake have something to do with Weight at the end or Do they vent and add weight to the end ??? !
Need to make some more grendel videos!
Have you seen the new sierra bullets, tipped gamekings only at midway, they are called the gamechanger, also a .224 60 grain tipped matchking that sure looks like a butt kicking bullet.
Thanks for all the info on all your Grendel videos I have watch all of them. I been in the works of building my first ar and building it as a Grendel. I bought a full assembled AR in 556 so I'm just building the full upper I have a Aero precision m4e1 with a 17in Grendel Hunter handguard and I'm going with an 18-inch barrel I just haven't figured out who to get my barrel from with all the confusion of what Grendel is what Grendel throat and type as you know but I think I'm going with a Sanders arms 18in match grade barrel with 5r rifling(they don't say who there barrel maker is but they sent me an email saying that it has the Grendel Saami specs). I'm also getting into reloading which I have never done before. Is there any way you could give me a list of what kind of equipment I would need for the Grendel. I would like to replicate your set up or something similar at the moment all I have is a bench and some nice calipers.
The 123 grain ELD-M would work very well in a grendel. If it were my horse to ride I would shoot the 123 ELD-M when I wanted to reach out and touch something.
123gr is the classic Grendel bullet. I think Hornady released the 123gr A-Max with the Grendel in mind specifically, and their factory ammo is 123gr A-Max (now ELD-M) and 123gr SST.
You can't go wrong by sticking with 123's, which is exactly what I did in my earlier 6.5 Grendel videos when first starting out in the cartridge. My first Grendel (24" Brownells/Satern barrel) liked the 123gr Sierra Match King in particular. That gets boring after a while, which is why you'll see me trying some other things these days. Also, this Faxon barrel hasn't shot the 123 SMK's or 123 Lapua Scenars particularly well so far. I'll get back to them eventually.
Could it be ya have a bigger surface area as in the crown of the suppresser vrs the normal crown of the barrel
I would love to know what you recommend for a new hand loader, for reloading needs for the 6.5 Grendel. The Lyman Digital Scale was garbage. I love Varget in 30-06 and H414, using Hornady 165 SST bullets. Which was for hunting, not punching paper.
I'm very curious about this grendel round, thanks for what you do. P.s. I just got a 7mm 08 bolt gun, do you have any info/videos on converting 308 military brass to 7mm08. Thanks
How about the 120GN ballistic tip and the 123gn ELD for the 6.5 Grendel? love the vids.
Hey Johnny, in my testing with 6.5G and AA2520 my stdev numbers went to crap when using the CCI #41 primers when compared to the CCI 400's. To reduce the ejector and extractor marks you may want to adjust the dwell time and slow the action down. A heavier buffer or spring may be all you need for when you're running the can at hotter loads.
spektrum841 or he can keep doing it correctly and just use the adjustable gas block with the correct standard weight Carbine buffer and spring.
Heavy buffers are only necessary on a full auto to counteract bolt bounce on shorter barreled guns with NATO loads.
33 mm case length will not provide enough charge for 140 gr. I’d go lesser. Need some velocity. The 6.5 CM is ok for the 140 with 47mm case.
Awesome to see more posts brother. Have you unpaused your Patreon account yet? I was thinking that if you still have all of your old RUclips content saved somewhere that you could upload them all, a series at a time to Patreon in case your channel here gets nuked. Just an idea.
I did 140gr nosler bthp with tac not the best group but not bad. if I can find primers again then I'll try finding the sweet spot if I can. Don't need 140gr but thought can't hurt to have it if it works
When is the next 6.5 Grendel reloading video? Is Varget a powder you would consider for the cartridge, possibly with the heavier bullets?
Have you heard of or know much about Shooters World Powders made by Lovex? Looks like midsouthshooterssupply.com has a nice sale going on for their powders.
Hey, Have you tried reloader 16 in the Grendel? I'm curious if you have. Great videos and keep em coming. :)
Johnny, you started out the video by saying that you had primed the cases with the CCI 41's by mistake. I never caught whether you thought it might be worthwhile to try a load or two (out of the ten) with the Federal (?) primer that you had used previously, and see if it made a difference worth mentioning.
The nosler 130gr RDF looks good
Any chance of testing barnes bullets in the grendel
Ejector marks can be misleading. Would the same rounds show damage in a bolt rifle? Consider changing the buffer (not necessarily the gas setting). Ripping the case out early (timing) can cause the back pressure and marks you are seeing. Also, shorter COL will require less powder, along with a magnum primer - you can achieve the desired higher velocities.
I guess you should do better with fired formed brass
And better primers
Thanks for the video 👍🏻
I hate to sound stupid, but here goes...
I used to own a K-31 with a Harmonic Dampener. It worked great with the groups shrinking about 20% with the Dampener on.
Could your Suppressor be acting like a harmonic dampener?????
Have you tried a heavier buffer to get rid of the ejector marks? I’ve been testing that lately and it seems to help. I went from a standard carbine buffer with the gas down to an h3 with full gas. It would be an interesting area to explore.
I've messed with heavy buffers in 300 Blackout and 22 Nosler, but haven't played that much in the Grendel. I'm using a standard Rifle buffer and spring right now and I can usually tune the gas block to get rid of brass damage. If I can't, I will definitely start messing with the buffer and spring setup.
I'm curious if somebody could take a AK-74 or 47 and chambered in the 6.5 Grendel give it the correct barrel length for maximum range and accuracy ww's the AK-47 or 74 mags
Richard Martin Krebs Customs has done AKs in the Grendel cartridge...... They still won’t shoot as accurately as the AR platforms do though.
Well got some 140 grain bullets and some NI33 LOL again last 3 on the shelf no I have to find some small rifle primers what ever I can get I guess
What yardage do you shoot at on these shows
Grendel is a cool caliber for AR (maybe the best)... Wish I had gotten that instead of my 7.62x39.
It's never too late! Life's too short to shoot something you're not happy with!
Checkout hardened arms I picked up a complete upper with bcg and ch 18" barrel for 329+shipping
Johnny, could your friend who made The Lump make you a tube that mimics the length of a suppressor? Back in the 80's we called them bloop tubes. NRA 22LR shillouete shooters put them on their Anschutz match guns for balance. I wonder if that will give a better harmonics result over The Lump?
P C were they just hollow tubes the same length? Or semi solid to share the same weight as X suppressor they would be using?
Tyler Rafferty , they were hollow tubes, but for this harmonics testing I would suggest something that is close to the weight and length of a suppressor. As an aside, those bloop tubes really quieted the muzzle blast of standard velocity 22, they went bloop instead of bang.
had some problem reloading . when seating bullets shoulder gets pushed/Crumpled down not on all of them but some why any ideas ? cases are all trimed seating die is not the problem so what would be the causing problem 2 time reload
TALLA300CforumZ , are you certain that you have the seating die NOT contacting the case? Put a case on the ram, raise the ram, then screw the seating die down until it just kisses the case. Back it up a half turn, then lock it down. The problems you describe sounds like the crimp part of the seating die is crushing the shoulder of the case in the seating operation. Do you have a good reloading manual? All oh them have good sections on the handloading process, including die setup.
Highlighted i try all that, but still doing it not all the time but on some of them. all cases went in the same dies only thing i can think of is the neck is to small. Elfster's youtube is thinking the same. really thank full for your help and input. case opening is .3065 to .307 never had any problem till know
Would to see you donthe 140gr Gold Dots in the Grendel
I agree, the 140 is just too much bullet for the Grendel. That bullet shoots better than any other in my RPR in 6.5 Creedmoor, and it's also the least expensive -- an unbeatable combination. 123's have always shot best for me in the Grendel. Never tried any 130's.
Why are you using such heavy bullets? Have you shot 100 gr. or 107gr. match bullets? If you have I've missed the episode. I have a Grendel. I have not liked any groups I've gotten with 130gr. or even 123gr. match bullets. I think they are too heavy for the Grendel. So I bought some 100gr. from Midway USA. I'll let you know what I think.
This barrel hasn't liked the 123's so far, but it loved the 130 Sierra Game King and the 135 Berger Classic Hunter. So, I kept experimenting with heavier stuff. Grendel is a deer hunting round for me, so the light bullets don't hold my interest. I will be testing with some of the light stuff eventually.
Johnny's Reloading Bench I'm trying to have it be a long range match rifle. I don't want to go to an AR-10 with the Creedmoor and such.
Johnny's Reloading Bench isn't this the 2nd powder that you found works for this round?
do you have a email? would like to ask other questions
The 144gr Lapua FMJBT get a .636bc ;) try em out.
15:26 you can actually see a very slight bend in the rim.
Yup, I noticed it during editing. I'm hoping that will iron itself out during resizing. There's a lot of downward pressure on a case during resizing and sometimes burrs and slight bends can straighten themselves out. I'll be keeping an eye on them.
Johnny's Reloading Bench I've noticed that with my 180gr supers in 300BLK. Just looking out.
You should change your nom-de-guerre to "One Flyer Bob". Just messin' with ya.
I wish my ruger mini 14 could shoot this good😂
For the love of JEBUS put the distance on the screen all the time. You change distance in different videos too. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
