  • Testing the 95gr Lehigh Defense Controlled Chaos in 6.5 Grendel. The tests powders are Accurate 2520 and IMR 8208-XBR.
    This video was made more difficult because the gun is currently outfitted with my ATN X-Sight HD II. It is a great scope, but not really suited to this type of precision work.

    Given this journey with 6.5 Grendel, would you recommend to someone to build out a 6.5 Grendel? If so, what manufacturer/company would you suggest for (1) Barrel (2) Bolt ? What "finicky" parts of the process did you discover in terms of fixing reliability? Thank you!

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  7 лет назад +15

      Yes, you should definitely build a Grendel! The only choice I regret is barrel length, especially since I run a silencer all the time. The gun is very heavy and not too practical, but it really shoots well! I plan to switch to a 16-18" barrel sometime soon.
      For bolts, I have read really good things about the Maxim and the JP.
      www.maximfirearms.com/online-store/complete-6-5-grendel-bolt/
      jprifles.com/1.4.7_Bolt.php
      The JP is super expensive, but if you're going all out I think it's the best.
      A lot of barrels come with a bolt included, but if you want to upgrade it or have a spare ready, a Maxim would be a good choice.
      A lot more companies have jumped into the barrel game since I built mine. I was recently looking around at 223 barrels and was really surprised by all of the new 6.5 Grendel sections popping up.
      If I was buying today these three would be at the top of my list:
      ballisticadvantage.com/ar-parts/ar-barrels/65grendel
      www.odinworks.com/6_5_Grendel_s/1875.htm
      ar15performance.com/inc/sdetail/38016/41932
      Good luck!

      ddyoder barrel and bolt is easy, go to www.ar15performance.com/6_5_grendel___cats and get their 18" or 20" 6.5Grendel barrel and order their matching 750XD Grendel bolt at the same time, best barrel/bolt combo made to date for the round. As for functioning, the biggest issue with that is the magazines. I've used the E-Lander mags from Alexander Arms without issue, some folks have had good results with the ASC mags and also the ones from C-Products, just make sure they are for 6.5Grendel, some folks have had the ASC mags for 7.62x39 work also.
      Otherwise, it builds just like any 223/556 AR15

      ddyoder Check out obsidian website, they sell satern barrels for less than $300 with a matching headspaced bolt. Go with a short 16-18" barrel. Fuck the extra length and weight for mild velocity gain. It's an intermediate cartridge. Guys get so caught up in trying to make it into a .308 or a 6.5 creedmoore they end up spending way too much money on stuff that turns their rifle into a ridiculously long heavy monster then they're disappointed that their gun still doesn't live up to a .308 or 6.5 Creed so they talk shit about the caliber and make everyone overlook what is probably one of the best ->INTERMEDIATE

      Steven your opinion is a bit much. The 6.5 Grendel is what this video is about, nothing else. BTW some people want the long barrel for the velocity to hunt from a tree stand or blind and want the extra velocity for longer shots with flatter trajectory and a better point blank zero. Your opinion gets a D- from me and I didn't need to use any profanities to make a point. BTW you can get a complete upper for $350 or less. People go to this cartridge because of the AR-15 platform and lower recoil also it is a very accurate cartridge. The shorter barrels are definitely a better way to go with those who go suppressed. BTW if you are shooting cheap steel cased Wolf Ammo you shouldn't really be giving any opinions. This cartridge is really for a person who hand loads the availability of ammo at stores is negative. Components are reasonable for the reloader.

    Thanks for making this one. I want more 6.5 Grendel videos also. I bought a box of those Lehigh bullets but haven't loaded them yet. This is a great video for me just to see what you got with them and compare my results with. I have a few pounds of the 8208 XBR and I liked seeing good results with the Standard Deviation numbers. I didn't really care about the ATN scope footage since it was so grainy but something clearer and that gives you a good "aim small, miss small" aiming point would be good.

    Nice job on the 6.5 Grendel. I have numerous in the AR-15 configuration. The Grendel is my midrange competition gun and I absolutely love it. IMR 8208 is the best powder in all of the bullet weights I've tried. You make very good videos. I can pretty much assure you that if you took that chronograph off the end of the barrel your groups would tighten & be more consistent. Every time you shoot that chronograph attachment moves just enough to change the barrel harmonics. Also check to make sure anything else that is attached to the barrel is tight.
    Looking forward to more videos....

    Very interesting video! Lehigh Defense controlled chaos is a great hunting choice. I was impressed with the speed that you managed to achieve with it. Johnny I certainly enjoy all the work you put into doing your videos and the research you do along with it. I certainly am a bit confused though on how much you use the chronograph attached to the barrel. Sometimes you do and sometimes you don't. I know a lot of experts only use those to check velocities in a ladder test for standard deviations and when they shoot groups remove the device because it changes the harmonics on the barrel. Even the suppressor does that, but if you shoot with a compressor all the time that is what you want to load for. I just can't see the consistency unless you yourself have tested is with and without on the same loads and know differently. I have considered buying one of those chronographs that mount to the barrel but have hesitated to do so because of what the experts say about only using them for the ladder test. Have you shot both ways to see if it has any effect on the group sizes as others claim it does? If not maybe sometime you can check it out and it could be a game changer for your later videos, or not. Anyhow I do enjoy your videos and the work you do in putting them together.

    First time watching and I appreciate your approach. Lots of info without war stories. Digital scope cams suck compared to real glass so I figure your groups were a result of not being able to see well. I vote for shooting tests/targets for accuracy with high power quality glass. I haven't loaded for my new Grendel yet but I bought 95gr vmax hornady I'll work up with your loads and report in.

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  4 года назад

      The digital scope got pulled off and it's been collecting dust for a few years. It was a terrible idea! For your 95gr V-Max loads, your charge weights will probably end up higher than we shot with this Lehigh. Copper/brass bullets like Lehigh are much longer than traditional lead-core bullets, so they don't seat as far down into the case. More room for powder = lower pressures for a given charge weight, generally speaking. I'm not sure what powders you're thinking about using, but Hodgdon has some load data on their website if you're considering 8208 XBR.

      I don't think we'll see the military adopt it. At least not any time soon. The bolt is a weak spot and there's no sense in denying it. I had problems with extraction and had to modify mine (see my earlier vids) and early on there were problems with breakage. That would be my biggest tip on getting into 6.5 Grendel...do your homework and buy a nice bolt. Maxim bolts have a good reputation, JP are awesome but very expensive, and several other good ones have come out since I was last shopping for them.
      Beyond that, there are a million political and logistical reasons why I don't think we'll see the military drop 5.56 anytime soon.
      The patreon thing is still pretty new so only the more recent videos have links. I should probably take the time to go back in add it. Here you go: www.patreon.com/reloading

      @@JohnnysReloadingBench the extractor issue is a real and serious problem. Most bolts sold for 6.5 Grendel have a 556 extractor. It gave me serious headaches trying to figure it out. Finally, I bought the extractor from Alexander Arms. Totally solved all the problems. 6.5 Grendel is awesome.

    JRB, like the use/proof of equipment but. I believe you need a good scope for all your accuracy testing. Different than any scope for hunting. Also I believe you may want to check timing on that rifle/ or brisson speed of the powders used. A lot of gas out the ejection port, may also be the can? Don't know. Also mention your twist rate for barrels used. I shoot lr in 6.5 and found 1-8 is right for the 142's Used, 30 inch tube. Check and mention what speed the bullet manufactures recommend for a particular bullet, they have done the homework for us. All in all a good presentation. If you want to try recording shots, get a range can camera, it will blue tooth back to where you are or your device for recording. I am stepping into the 6.5 for my ar's and will plan on 120gr smk max, 24 inch is fine and will be design built purposely for across the coarse matches. Look forward to seeing more in the future. God Bless.

    Copper/ brass solids create higher chamber pressures and thus higher velocities than standard jacketed bullets of the same weight. Most times their larger bearing surface is to blame, but also think about the material being used. Solid projectile will take more energy to swage/ obturate to the rifling in the bore and thus create more velocity from the higher pressures....
    Or something like that

    • @1rad58
      @1rad58 7 лет назад +2

      Steve Danny 100% spot on, the suppressor adds a little velocity to the equation as well but I think the bullet length decreasing case capacity as well as the solid bullet and longer bearing surface had the largest impact on velocity/pressure gains. Humidity, air temp, and barometric pressure are also factors but likely not as significant.

    I can do without the scope cam. 8208XBR shoots pretty good in my 16" barrel, but W748 really shines. With 123 grain Amax, it will put five shots in basically the same hole at 100 yards. Scott Milam Barnes has load data for 6.5 Grendel on their website. I would recommend you look at the 100gr TTSX or 100gr Tac-TX, they are the same bullet with different packaging. The 120gr solid copper bullets just take up too much Cade capacity to run the speeds we want in Grendel.
      I have found that 30.0gr of 8208 is the perfect load in my 20” Krieger barreled 6.5G AR15, and also my factory Ruger American Predator, giving me right at 2850fps with the 100gr bullet.
      Please work up to that load, it is safe in my guns, but might be too hot in others.
      Edit: My loads are set to an overall length of 2.295” and they fit and feed perfect in my ASC made mags, but not in C-Products mags!!

    Have you seen the 10 shot method the 6.5 guys had where you space them all like .4 and then look for a flat spot in the speed? I am going to try it w/ my new 6.5 creedmoor and .270.
    Saves a LOT of components if it works and it's not reliant on me not pulling the shot!!!!

    Seems like the scope/camera is great in concept, but not quite there yet in execution, especially considering the extra weight.

    I hated my ATN like that until i found out i could change reticles. Once i swapped to their Mil dot or the other reticle with a dot in the center, my groups tightened up without changing anything else.

    I say yes to the scope cam, I found myself saying at the time of the shot where I thought the shot would land at the time the reticule would move at the trigger release, but I understand all the time would be to much for some, but to be honest with you if you review your footage you will understand what I'm trying to say, it will help you also, just my two cents. the reticule on the night scope was a nightmare for grouping.

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  7 лет назад

      I am thinking that I should have switched the reticle color to green. The scope has several recicles and colors to choose from. Out on the range I was pretty sure my hold was terrible. Once I started editing the footage and watching, it was even worse than I thought! I would love to see the same on my regular scopes (with a much clearer scope camera as well). I think it would be educational!
      I will probably buy a nice setup to film through the scope, but only use it occasionally on videos. I'm sure we can find a balance where it's not too annoying.

    • @MsJon52
      @MsJon52 7 лет назад

      I think it would be a bonus for the occasional view through the scope, especially for involuntary body movements that explain shots that should not have behaved the way they connected to the target, ect you will pick up movement that effects your shot, bonus, can I ask you if you have a stock rest as well as the stock into your shoulder? the reason I ask when viewing your vid I was noticing the effect of your heartbeat, perhaps I'm wrong I will have to view again, enjoy your vids a big thumbs up.

    I watched 2 or 3 videos..(before) the hog hunt, and one after it. I am saving to buy my Grendel upper... I watched the reviews back in the "loading area"; I cant determine as of yet what the best powder/bullet/weight of bullet would best suit for me to start with. I am looking at an 18" upper; as suggested by my gunsmithing buddy. I know my speeds wont be as high because of your barrel length, I'm not trying to "match" shoot, or even (hog hunt) just something to give me "under" 1inch groups up to 2" groups. The scope will be some variation of the VORTEX brand. Thanks for any suggestions...

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  7 лет назад

      You'll be good with that 18" barrel. 123gr bullets are the standard. Start out with the Hornady ELD or the Sierra Match King in that weight and you will be in good shape.
      For your first powder, start with something that has a decent amount of load data available. Look at the Hodgdon and Western Powders websites. The Hornady manual also has a lot of 6.5 Grendel data. H335, 8208XBR, Accurate 2520, Benchmark, Ramshot TAC, etc. There are a lot of powders to choose from.

    • @jaspertownsend1
      @jaspertownsend1 7 лет назад

      Thank You for responding so quick... I have a Hornady manual, Sierra manual, and and Lyman manual, they show some different varities on their powders for both the 123 grain & 129. However they all agree on the 8208-H335. I use the H335 on my 556 now. So it will take me time to see what "my 6.5grendel" likes. As I watched your video, I could clearly see your build didnt like a certain powder or bullet. I did take in account your length of barrel as well. BUT...thank you for responding again...and keep making the "Grendel" vids as you see fit. I will be "new" to this caliber... but understand the steps to find what "the gun" likes!!

    My home built Grendel upper w/ 18" barrel keeps denting my brass. It's always right on and below the shoulder. I've been shooting steal and it doesn't dent the steal wolf lacquered cases. I havn't shot brass in a while, so I don't know if its running smoother or not. I just know my reliability is almost perfect now (it was much worse before).

    • @garrytalley8009
      @garrytalley8009 6 лет назад

      Brass dents easier than steel. Steel cases are not forgiving a stuck case can break an extractor. I don't shoot that stuff in any of my guns. I wish you folks luck that shoot it. BTW most people that shoot it just leave it lay at the range making for a mess for others to pick up. Maybe that's the bigger reason they shoot the stuff anyway. What AR does not put a ding in a case when ejected? All of mine do in all the calibers I shoot.

    • @jimhans1
      @jimhans1 5 лет назад

      Jwh Merica in my guns it’s about 15-20fps per inch of barrel. So you would in theory gain 80-120fps with a 24” barrel versus the 18”.

    We included pressure-tested data for that bullet in the 2nd Printing of Volume II of the 6.5 Grendel Handbooks. We tested CFE223, H335, and TAC. CFE223 was the fastest at 2790 fps from an 18" barrel, not exceeding 50ksipeak chamber pressure.
    H335 hit 2760fps, and TAC produced 2745fps at MAP. I loaded up a large batch recently for hog testing.

    Nice attempt, but got to say not very impressed with the digital zoom of the ATN scope, was that full 20X zoom you were using? Based on how blurry and difficult it was to see the crosshairs esp the aiming dot (looked like there was a dot in the center but it just disappeared to us) and how blurry at full zoom I'd say no need, made the vid busy and didn't show much...

  • @junglejim7664

    The reticle you used in the scope was distracting. I'd prefer a straight crosshair. The scope view was interesting but not as important as the target camera. When you do shoot the Lehighs again, I'd prefer to see what the highest charge from each of these powders will do through the proper scope. H335 would be an interesting powder with these bullets.

    I don't mean to troll, even if that's the appearance, but I can't distinguish your trigger pull from your trigger release... many of the results of which you can consistently see in the scope cam and the groups. I see a match trigger, but it's worthless without consistent application of the fundamentals. Trigger control is the only thing you can easily see deficiencies in, not so much breathing or anticipating the shot but with the trigger control I have to wonder what all was going on. Despite this the groups were actually pretty good considering. Respect to you as a human, a shooter, a reloaded, and a brave soul putting yourself out there for RUclips to criticize. As a former NCO who trained marksmanship to soldiers, I've got to say you just can't blame the gear or ammo until you make yourself consistent.

      You can get Forster die set full length die and a competition seating die for under $100, Lee makes the cheapest presses on the market. You are best to purchase a starter set that comes with all the basic tools you need to get started. If you wanted to buy a press and the other things one at a time it would cost a lot more. You should be able to get into reloading with the dies for under $300 if you shop wisely online.
