    We have a solid amount of field data on the 6.5Grendel with wild game. For wild game we pretty much exclusively shoot the factory Hornady 123gr SST and a majority of the time use a 24" barreled set up because thats what the box data is based on as they use a 24" test barrel for that so its a fast conversion in the field when we need to. I have killed 1x Elk with a 18" barreled upper at 200yds (head shot) and 3 Antelope with the same upper within 200yds as well. The 24" barreled upper has killed 7+/- Elk, 3x Ibex, 2x Barbary Sheep, 1x White Tail, 1x Mtn Lion, 1x Javelina from 150yds to 480yds. My 15yr old son shot a Cow Elk at 480yds (one shot kill - neck shot) for the longest stretch out of the 6.5Grendel, one Ibex was at 436yds and a Elk and Ibex again at 400yds. Someone documented a Cow Moose kill in AK with a 6.5Grendel and either a 18" or 20" barreled upper at 100yds as well with a one shot kill. The 6.5Grendel has a payload and ballistics to pretty much handle most Big Game as long as Shot Placement and Appropriate Distances are followed.
    Its an incredibly great caliber for youth hunters, small framed beginner hunters, females, and others because its low recoiling, affordable to shoot alot and get very solid consistent hits with and build confidence with for the needed shot placements. In several states its not legal to hunt with a 5.56 but it is with a 6.5Grendel - CO for example requires a .240Cal or larger for Big Game Hunting and thus a 6.5Grendel is legal to hunt Big Game with, NM allows any center fired caliber but your limited in distance and size of game potentially with the 5.56 if you did hunt with it where as the 6.5Grendel can reasonably handle any Big Game animal in NM.
    We have a YT Channel as well for hunting with ARs and a MeWe Group. Follow along or Join in and contribute pics and info if you are a Hunter using the AR platform

    I think either bullet would take elk cleanly. I certainly wouldn't hesitate shooting an elk or feel under gunned. Many elk are killed every year with 243Win and 100gr bullets or less. As your distance increases a bit, you'll retain even more bullet weight on both bullets, especially the Swift SSII than you did in your test. They may not pass completely through elk, or drop every elk in their tracks, but all you really need to do is let the air out of them and they die within seconds usually. Just my humble opinion.

    The scirocco II is way underrated . It's extremely well designed and worth the money when your game could be 20 yards away or max range for the cartridge it's loaded in. tsx and ttsx are also a proven performers when the gun likes the bullets. When not accuracy is not wonderful. Swift Aframes are also great performers for deer and bigger ,especially in thick cover but they typically can be shot out to 200-300yards, basically midrange for most hunting cartridges. Trophy bonded bear claws are another proven design , their tipped version does extend range abit . They are basically an in-between of the scirocco and Aframe for expansion and penetration for typical hunting rounds. Nosler partition is another good choice but you must know it's design intent is for slow cartridges for closer ranges or long ranges for high velocity cartridges. Bullets are not just bullets , study them, learn them , get better results and understand where the money goes ... If it's quality or gimmick. Swift ,Barnes and federal/ speer trophy bonded have long proven track records.nosler and sierra do too. Major ammo companies use their bullets for premium ammo if they cannot duplicate them for whatever reason . Rem core-lokt = Hornady interlock. Nosler accubond = hornady interbond. Winchester ballistic silver tip and accutip bonded are nosler ballistic tip and accubond tipped dressed up as goths and has just made a trophy bonded clone called the solid base bonded . Federal premium uses all the above and has purchased some designs to use exclusively .trophy bonded is one. Grand slam is another (and another great speer design , older grand slams are better than new . They have a bonded core with progressive hardness. Dead soft at the tip and hard cast base. The first ones had a seven layer core. They reduced it to three and federal has reduced it to two.)... Anyway it's really worth learning and will improve your hunts ,target shoots, varmint sessions and self defense choices . Super x or corelokt or interlock are fine for low challenge deer hunts . You get a broadside shot and take it cleanly at 10-200 yards. Premium bullets open up options for humane quartering shots , back to sternum shots , downward chest plate shots , and often allow smaller rounds to take bigger animals cleanly.

    I wish I had never gotten rid of my Alexander upper. I also had an 18” barrel that ran over 2800fps with the Barnes 100 TTSX. My current barrel is a custom Bartlein 20” 5R and it’s much slower than my Alexander barrels were.
    I would be concerned with expansion at distance with those two bullets in your test. I would want to keep impact velocity on the Sciroccos at 2000fps or higher and the Barnes at 1800fps or higher to ensure reliable expansion.
    In my experience 120 grains is the sweet spot for the Grendel.
    I do have a load worked up with 97 grain Hammer Absolute Hammer bullets at 2960fps and have room to go. I’m confident I can hit 3000fps with them. For 400 yards and in they will be deadly since they are a mono Bullet.

      I have shot milk jugs 1500 yard with my ar 15 with no problems. The bolt action I made is a completely different animal. I can push a 123gr eld to 2750 with minimal signs of pressure. It will out perform my 308 in wind easily.

      @@MrGhostface213 My ar15 has a 18 inch or 18 3/4 no threading for a comp. I finished with a final diameter of .750 from the muzzle to the gas block with a rifle length gas system so, I could get thicker barrel until it gets to the gas block. with a 18 - 20 inch barrel wont really make a huge difference in fps. I just like shorter gun for hunting.

    I wouldn’t choose either of those two as a long range hunter for a Grendel. Those may expand at 50yds but I doubt you get expansion at 200yd out of those two. Better choice would be 123 elf-m or even a Nosler ballistic tip.

    6.5 Grendel is Evil on hogs

  • @gsitzkowitz

    I'm going to play devils advocate on this. The best bullet for the Grendel as a hunter would probably be the 123 SST Hornady that was designed for it and possibly the 100 grain Nosler partition. I shot a small meat doe at 105 yard with a 120 Barnes TTSX out of my 6.5 Creedmoor @2770FPS and it failed to exit or kill the deer. It was a steep rear quartering shot that hit the deer at the base of the rib cage went through the stomach, the diagram, and into one lung and never exited. The deer ran 15 yards and laid down. I had to finish her with my pistol. I can't imagine how much worse it would have been if I had knocked off 200 FPS by using a Grendel. The only deer I killed with a Grendel was a 156 yards, base of the neck shot from the front. DRT but no exit and no blood! I almost couldn't find the entrance wound. That was with the 123 SST. I'm in a like/hate relationship with my Creedmoor which is what I went to after seeing the performance of the Grendel. I'm spoiled and just used to better field performance than I've seen from either these 6.5 cartridges. Try your test at 100 yards, I think that's more real world.

      I appreciate your input. I just released a video today from 300 yards. Feel free to check it out. It's kinda funny, but my experience has been the opposite. The reason I use these bullets is because I shot a mule deer at 25 yards with the 123 sst and again at 40ish yards. Neither bullet exited and the deer ran about 70 yards before expiring. I made both shots behind the shoulder and hit no major bone. I've used Barnes bullets in the past and have been very satisfied. your experience with them is quite interesting I appreciate your input

      High Country Adventures I’m looking forward to your video. There’s a video with a guy shooting a hog with a 100 partition. It’s the most damage I’ve seen on game by any Grendel bullet!

      I agree. Maybe the title is confusing, the question i'm asking is related to the ultimate bullet for that cartridge. 6.5 grendel is an excellent cartridge for hunting out to 300-400 yards.

    Why must a 'hunting rifle look like a military rifle ?

    • @randyhix634
      @randyhix634 3 года назад

      It’s lighter, more ergonomic, can put stocks on that absorb recoil better. great for deep backcountry when every ounce you carry counts. It’s not about looking like a “military rifle” it doesn’t matter what it looks like.

      I would say the 6.5x55 Swede has most ever caliber beat if anyone is counting I’m sure it and the older brother 7x57 Mauser has killed more African plains game as well as a uncountable number of elephants
      So anyone can pick a caliber and say it’s the “best”
      But the reality of it is
      90 percent of “modern” calibers have a family tree that started in 1880 to 1898
      So we just keep reinventing the wheel so to speak

    Dude. Your loads are way too hot. 31 gr of CFE223 is max with 120-123 gr bullets. Pressure signs don’t mean anything on an AR15. If you’re seeing pressure signs on an AR you’re WAY PAST the safe operating pressure of the AR platform. The 6.5 Grendel bolt is even more vulnerable. Stick with published loads.
    Those velocities are more than I get with a max load of CFE223 and 123 gr bullets with a 20” Alexander Arms rifle

  • @elliottcole9120

    6.5 Grendel is a cartridge, not a "bullet"

  • @Turing_Test
    @Turing_Test 3 года назад +1

    Videos like this are exactly why people should stick to published load data and not trust random recipes they find online. 32 gr of CFE under 127/130 gr pills is insanity. These loads are absolutely over pressure, and it is dangerous to recommend these loads to anyone.

    Neither bullet will expand at 400yds , they are way too tough for your low velocity. no one should use such a weak cartridge for long range , they make way better 6.5 s for long range such as 6.5 prc, 6.5 rpm , 260ai and so on .
