The Grendel videos are my favorite for sure
Just gor a 6.5 Grendel. This is my new favorite channel. Thanks for sharing.
Great shooting!
Thanks for the load work and video work. Helps a ton. Love the channel. Liked!
Awesome shooting! I really enjoy watching your videos!
Great shooting! I believe you will be surprised with the velocity hornady leverevolution will give ya it's also pretty accurate. Also, the Berger 130 OTM AR hybrid will shoot lights out in the Grendel. I made a call to Berger and they stated that this bullet is also approved for hunting and they actually recommended it over the classic hunter for whitetail. I've made a couple of call to Berger over the years and they are very informative and great people to do business with. Great channel and awesome video. Thanks.
I bought a 20” barrel 6.5 Grendel and have been handloading, 140 grain hollow point bullets over 28 grains of accurate arms 2520 powder, my standard deviation is 7.4 with a velocity of 2279 fps. This is a new barrel with less than 60 rounds through it and I am receiving three-quarter inch groups with this load data. Sounds crazy but I think 100 grain to 123 grain bullets do fly flat, but for me the 140 grain bullet groups better out to 200 yards.
The 130 Tipped Matching and power pro varmint shot pretty darn good out of my CZ 527. 24" barrel.
I got right at 2485 @ 28.8 grains. Averaging 1.4" groups@200 yards. With federal brass that weighs 115 to 116 grains. CCI BR primers. Overall length was 1.71 measured with comparator on my digital caliper. I started at 28 grains and went up by .2 of a grain at a time. Velocity started at an average of 2375. 2392. 2460. 2470. 2485. For each 5 shot group.
The 28.6 and 28.8 grain loads all hit in the same spot. All ten shots just over 1.6" at 200 yards, so i split the difference and loaded a box at 28.7. And shot a 4.5" group@ 535 yards. Pretty happy with that. Out of a pencil barrel hunting rifle.
Good luck with your Grendel!!!
And great videos.!!!
I finally received my bullet's for my new 6.5 Grendel. The H-120 Gr. ELD vs Sierra 120 Gr. using the H335. Good grouping with Hornady, and bullet's hitting with the Sierra 120 Gr. It only had 7 rounds through it.
JRB, GREAT VIDEO! I have shot a lot of ppvarmint in the 223 right around the 26gr is amazing with 68,69gr BTHP out of a 20 in. Wilson barrel.
It will be showing up in my mk262 series with 77gr bullets in 223, and we'll be testing it with some lighter bullets eventually. I liked the accuracy signs from this gun, at least! Let's hop that carries over for me to 223.
you are very fast . thanks again i love your videos !
Great video again. I ran the numbers on that 2261fps speed with 135gr Berger Classic Hunter, .584 G1 BC. At sea level, it wouldn't hit 1800fps until 350yds exactly, still has 972ft-lbs of energy. Still has 1000ft-lbs at 325yds, and is still supersonic at 1000yds using the G7 .303 BC. I actually called up Berger about another topic, and the 135gr Classic Hunter came up. The tech support guy told me they developed it for 6.5 Grendel. I figured he meant 6.5 Creedmoor, but looking at the ogive and how short it is, whereas the boat tail is long, maybe he was right, because we talked about CM as well.
Love it. I just shot my best group out of my 18 inch Odin with horn brass, 123sst, fed 205m, 2.230, and 28.5 gr 8208xbr. 5 in one hole group. Shooting at hunting camp. No velocities.
Great groups and nice shooting in the snow! I think you may run out of case capacity with those 135 grainers before you see any pressure deformation unless you single feed your rifle but hey it's fun to see where this goes. Thanks for sharing.
My Grendel did not really shine until I loaded the 120 SMK over H322. Other powders were fair to good, H322 puts 5 shots inside 3/4 MOA on a pretty consistent level with a few groups under 1/2 MOA. I know each rifle is different, but my CZ527 ( skinny barrel ) is now a keeper. I just need to let it cool every 5 shots or the groups will open up a bit.
Nice job Johnny I love my Grendel
Great stuff JRB, that 135 grain Berger classic Hunter is a shooter. Nicely done.
All it took was one box and it is near the top of my "favorite bullets" list now! I just ordered some more today so I'm looking forward to more testing with it.
Yes sir!!!!... heading to purchase these pillz..... right now!
Nice job in powering through with this barrel. I would still replace it with a barrel that doesn't work with just a few bullets. I think they should send you a new barrel that's been properly stress relieved.
Berger bullets are incredible.
Great video
Liking the PP Varmint. Wow. Need to play with that one.
This makes me want to try the 142 or maybe even the new 150 ABLR since they'll expand down to 1300 fps and would carry whatever modest velocity better with the additional BC
Love it. Awesome groups.
Winning!
Shakesolude..they have commercial brass catchers available thu Midway..I have 3 so far. I see the deal you mention tho..sounds like fun!
Very nice video. Thanks for sharing
Winchester 748 an 2520 have been working for me in the Grendel.
Great video! Chock full of useful grendel info and fun to watch. Looking forward to seeing more. Wondering how the PP Varmint would do behind the Nosler 129 ABLR? Thank you, and--- Subscribed!
great shooting! I wonder how it will do in warmer temps. surely the fps will go up
I would also like to see some shooters world powder being used too please. On 6.5 Grendel and 300 aac. Great videos love watching them.
Great to see a heaver bullet for Grendel.
This video tells me that the hornady A-tips would perhaps perform well in the Grendel.
You should definitely try them! Also you should consider adding BL-C2 to the Grendel line.
I tested blc2 and didn't see good results.. lever revolution might do well for the heavier bullets.
Damn. I have Faxon's 20 inch fluted match (put it in a couple of weeks ago). Shoots the factory 123 SSTs good, but still getting materials together to work up some loads, but man ... I hope it shoots that well.
Love the Grendel vids I would like to try the Berger bullets but can’t justify the price
with a BC of .584 and minimum expansion rating at 1800 FPS you don't need much more velocity for potential effectiveness out to 300 yards
distance Velocity Ft-Lbs
Muzzle 2261 1532
100 2123 1351
200 1990 1187
300 1862 1039
if you compare this to your 300 blk results with the Seirra 135 gr with a BC of .290 it comes up way short of this Berger 135 - assuming the same velocity:
distance Velocity Ft-Lbs
Muzzle 2261 1532
100 1988 1185
200 1737 904
300 1511 684
Now all we need are some high BC's in light weight 277 bullets - arrrrgggg.
Hopping once you find a load work up you take the suppressor off and see how they perform. I am considering the same faxon barrel so I am watching the videos closely.
I always size and tumble after. It cleans them..and removes all marks on the case.
I fought with an RCBS hand primer for years. Just got a Lyman hand priming tool and it is so much easier to use.
Berger projectiles are superior. I would also encourage use in .223 remington/5.56.
Great video!👍🏻👍🏻How does the Faxon Barrel shoot without all of the extra stuff "HANGING "" off the end of the barrel??
If you're looking for a quality hunting bullet for the Grendel you need to try barns 100 grain ttsx. With 748. The 120 ttsx where pretty good to with 2520.
Hoping that once you have a load worked up that you take the suppressor off and see how it performs. I am looking at the same barrel and I would like to run it without a suppressor so u am watching you videos closely
Thank you.
I was thinking with the 1:8 twist barrel that heavier rounds would respond well. I am interstate if there are any factory loads with heavier than 123 gr bullets. The bulk of my hunting will be less than 300 yards, so I would take accuracy over a flatter trajectory.
Great groups. Would like to see how high you can go, maybe 29.5? What's the situation with the barrel whip though? Would be nice to see what it will do without the suppressor.
Dedication, shooting in a snow storm. Shooting now like what you paid for. Would be curious to see if and how much they open up
with the can and chrono off
Amazing groups, I guess those bergers are worth the extra $$$
Do you know what the ft/ lbs would be with those bullets at those speeds out to what range? love my Grendel. Thanks for these videos
Have you saw Speer's load data for the 120 gr Gold-Dot and Power Pro 2000-MR yet? The FPS is much higher than Power Pro Varmint or anything else they list. Check it out for us.
Anyone else re-watching all JRB's videos?
I am, really enjoy all the info on load data
Good video.
What's your hottest 45ACP 230gr load that runs well?
I have some hand loads from a fellow in Kansas City that run 230 at 1150fps with Enforcer powder and CCI primers.
I know this video is a year old but...have you done any additional testing with this bullet and these powders? Recently purchased my first Grendel and am looking forward to having some fun with it.
Midsouth is also waving hazmat fee if you buy 4 lbs. or more.
Hey Johnny, have you shot the Berger 130 gr. OTW Tactical bullets in the Grendel? Word is they're supposed to be magazine length friendly and accurate to boot! I'm loading some now but would love to get you're take on them.
Love it!
what is that red funnel you use can you send a link please im trying to get into reloading now thanks johnny
Do you have any WW 760 to try. It's a little slower burning than 2520. It might push those heaver Berger's faster
I couldn't stop watching the bug on your press while you were sizing. Creeped me out.
Whats the twist rate on the faxon barrel. Love the grendel loads. Cant wait to reload for 6.5
Hey JRB, Vihtavuori has load data for 6.5G going up to 156gr bullets!! Also, looks like 29.0gr of AA2520 should be closer to the actual max charge, looking at the data from western powders/Accurate, from 107gr to 123gr the max charges are 29.6gr or heavier, I'm betting that 28.5-29.1 would be a good test, in 0.2gr increments for 4 different 5 shot groups.
www.vihtavuori.com/en/reloading-data/rifle-reloading/6-5-mm-grendel.html
Yup, I think we've got room to move up with both of these powders. I tried to keep things conservative for this first test. I'll definitely be dropping down to .2 increments and seeing how far we can creep up. I ordered two more boxes of these bullets today, so more tests should be coming soon.
I've been wanting to try N540. I've got some N550 coming for Creedmoor tests but I haven't ordered the N540 yet. Too many damn powders out there to test.
jimhans1 if you get a copy of the 1st loading data pamphlet aka black book it has the calculus formula for going up or down in grain weight at European standards not lawyer loads of late
David Methvin I have one somewhere in my reloading shop. Sadly it doesn't have the newer rounds listed, but the math IS helpful.
How about trying this powder with the 6.5 Creedmoor. Think it would work as good with the GRENDEL??
I want to build an upper for my AR-15 for deer hunting. 200 yards would be the longest shot. Would you suggest 6.5 Grendel or 300 Blackout? I do reload if that matters.
I admire all your work to do the analysis - kudos to you! I was looking at Hornady's 65 Grendel products and all 3 have muzzle velocities of 2580, which is much higher than all 4 of yours. They are 123 Grain. Assuming their products have the expected accuracy, why so big a difference? And, is there a benefit of accuracy in a lower velocity (and associated lower "wild" behavior from higher powder charges)?
That data is also out of a 24-inch barrel, with no gas system.
FYI... Natchez has free hazmat on orders over $100 today only. 2520 in stock too.
Thanks for the tip! I went ahead and placed an order. There were a few Creedmoor powders I needed as well, so the timing was right.
Too bad Natchez won't sell in TN, same state where they're located.
Bill Holt: I didn't realize that until recently. Apparently Natchez does a lot of wholesale business with gun shops in TN, GA and that area and doesn't want to compete with their wholesale customers. Kinda sucks but I understand where they're coming from.
Try Sierra TGK Gamechanger 130 gr. Bullets for the grendel with H322.
Just asking. Why don't you use a 24" barrel? The extra inches gives you free velocity. For example with my 24" barrel A-MAX advertises 2580 fps with the 123g. I get 2615 fps.
I've ran 168 Berger ch and hornadys threw my gap 7wsm berger s groups were under 1/3 moa , hornadys were 3/4 at best I never said I could spell .......
Great results, thanks man. Do you think that the PP Varmint would cross over well to the larger creedmoor with similar results?
No, it is too fast-burning for Creedmoor. It would probably work with lighter bullets or low velocity applications, but not really a good option for high velocity heavy bullet situations.
I do not want to run a Suppressor which seems to stabilize a rifle's muzzle. Is there a muzzle brake that stabilizes without the sound suppression?
Sigh. Still waiting for that 130 grain game king video.
Hey how ya doing? What about AA1680 I think it's called? It's awesome on, 300 blackout 220 gr go about 1300fps. Is there a 5.56- 6.5 ? Ackley improved would be great ?. Thanks
can the snow or rain effect the bullets at longer ranges?
75 moa scope mount ....??????
17:40
“Let’s see if it’ll group.”
*puts second bullet in the same hole as the first bullet*
Think the VARMINT would work for the 6.5 Creedmore.
Have you ever ordered from mid south shooting supply?
Midsouth sent me email today if u buy 4 lbs of that shooters world powder u get free hazmat on entire order. They have 2520 in stock in both 1 and 8 lb jugs. That shooters world powder needs a JRB test anyway.
Supposedly SW Match Rifle is almost identical to 2520. More info here: forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=209872
I've been meaning to test some of those powders for a while now. Didn't they used to be cheaper? I'll get around to them very soon! Looks like they have good options for Grendel and Creedmoor. It's worth a try.
Johnny's Reloading Bench
I got a pound of SW Tactical rifle at the gun show and it was way cheaper.
I'm thinking you need to try the 100gr Barnes ttsx in the grendel and it's small case capacity, just a thought.....
Low weight bullets have horrible bc. Heavy is the way to go for long range.
What was your trim length set to on your brass?
one question. Where I can find the fan that inserts in the chamber to cool the barrel.? thanks Sir.
www.chamberchiller.com
How bout power pro varmint and the ablr?
My kids are named Secant, Ogive, Meplat, and Cordite.
You need a brass catcher bag on your rifle..fantastic groups!
Richard Tibbetts or maybe a miniature basketball hoop with a closed net sitting off to the side. Make catching brass into a game.
I was just about to say the same thing.
I recently got the pic mount Caldwell, and it sure is nice not to have to chase brass. And if you unzip the bottom, the brass will drop out so that you can easily inspect it as you shoot.
I have one! It screws up my camera shot, though. haha I like the camera to be able to see the action when I have feeding problems. I've hung tarps in the past and that works well.
Maybe you can funnel your tarp into a catch pan so that they roll back to you, and don't hit the ground and get muddy.
Fantastic groups! I have been loading Benchmark in my Grendel, but I will be trying these powders now! In chasing higher velocities in the Grendel, do you have any concerns about throat erosion and barrel life?
You need to look at Midsouth Shooters Supply
I find bergers to be fantastic for match shooting, but they don't expand in game. Takes three goos shots to bring down an elk or deer. And the exit wound is a pencil hole just like the puncture wound.
Have you tried the 130gn ELD yet?
Hey Johnny... I'm new to reloading and watch all your videos! I've noticed in your last few videos you're using the small WAOAW scale after you gave the larger version a great review. Are you having a problem with the large scale?
I've been getting enough drift from zero on my small WAOAW that I'm losing confidence in it. Ended up shelving it last weekend and using the Hornady scale instead. The Hornady is slower, but seems more trustworthy. Will probably just use the WAOAW for sorting bullets, etc from now on.
The large scale is still working great! I will use it in the next couple videos, just for the heck of it. I have mainly grabbed the small one lately because it is so small and convenient. I'm also realizing more and more these days that chasing the .02 precision during powder weighing is mostly a waste of time for shooting groups as 100 yards.
J H, you are the first person I've heard of that's had issues with the small WAOAW! Mine is still rock solid! Have you tried fresh batteries? I think I'm still using the original batteries in mine, and I've been wondering what might happen when they get weak.
JRB, I didn't think about the batteries, but I just installed some fresh ones. I'm still having the same problem, which is: once I've calibrated and zeroed (set tare) with the pan on the scale I will get anything from 0.0 to 0.2 once I remove the pan and replace it. What's also interesting is that my tare weight will vary with the pan removed (between -146.5 and -146.7 grains). I can also leave the empty pan on the scale and the reading will drift +/- .1gr just sitting there. I've tried it in several different rooms in the house, so I can't see it being a wind/draft issue.
Anyway a 6.5 will do 2600 FPS with 123 grain out of a 18 or 20 inch barrel? If not what would be the highest mv I could get
Alexander Arms somehow figured out a way to do 2600 with 123 Scenars out of a 20” during their testing, but they are the only ones. I haven’t found a powder yet that will come close to that. 2500 is a safer number to aim for, but there are still only a few powders that’ll do it before pressure signs, at least that’s the case in my 20” Odin.
Johnnys Reloading, could you do a video on how to work up loads for cartridges with no or very little reloading data. I have a 25-45 sharps and it's been my reason for getting into reloading. I have the factory sharps data but want to use different bullets/weight bullets like the Sierra 90gr game king instead of the factory 87gr hotcor.
Wow JBM puts that bullet doing 2236 with AA 2520 still doing 1141 at 1000 yards at 1900" Alt. where I shoot!
JRB would like to see if you can shoot the Grendel out to 1000 yards. That would be a great video
What barrel?
Right now Naches Shooter Supply it has free Hazmat
I went ahead and placed an order! Thanks for the tip. More 2520 is on the way, along with a couple other powders for the Creedmoor.
Dude you can't beat Berger. They're pricey but they're as perfect as bullets can be.
Series 6.5 grendel get down .25 Moa area consistently
Those first 2 groups look like they were shot by the 6mm PPC benchrest rifle
Not trying to spend your money... But, yuo really need to pour a concrete pad and build a shed or pavillion to shoot under. 12x16 would be a great size. Shooting table. Gun rack, shelves for holding stuff. Maybe even a place to sit a cooler full of cold drinks, or set a colman stove to make some hot coffee on winter day. Keep you dry in the rain or snow, and out of the hot sun.
I shoot.the berger 130 g hunter 30 gr of varmint 2620 fps at 5000ft elv, 25 in cz 527 . 3/4moa .it's awesome
Dangitt! I was really hoping those expensive darn pills were over rated. I guess I'm going to have to let the moths out of my wallet.
Just remember...if it won't shoot a Berger Hybrid it is broken!
Thomas Ewers that's interesting, i bought a box off berger hybrid 140 and i can't make thouse bullets shoot in my 6.5 creedmoor or imy 6.5x55.
The 130grs vld hunting works great in both guns, but they are crazy expensive in my country. I prefer lapua scenar ( but not the scenar L) in 123 and 139 grains.
Your confidence is your failure
