      @IceKisaragi13 doesn't hurt that Laffey is the most balanced starter. Z23 has better guns (higher FP, can equip light cruiser guns, more durability), Javalin has higher evasion, and a more powerful special ability, and Ayanami has better torpedoes. Laffey has middle of the road stats in all areas and has excellent AA (an Eagle Union specialty).

    U-556 drawing of herself and Bismark with her promise(an item in game was Certificate of Sponsorship) called to protect Bismark for giving her a band for her launch was the thing that made me a tear up.
    I thought it was just a bit too much then i search thinking Certificate of Sponsorship and the borrowed band was not real and i was broken after learning it was real and did include a drawing of U556 and Bismark with a promise that was unfulfilled.

      I first heard about Azur Lane when Bismarck was announced. As a Sabaton fan I came across Azur Lane Globals twitter post, where they used the first verse of Sabatons Bismarck song to announce Scherzo of Iron and Blood aka. the Bismarck event.
      I actually managed to finish the event and got all cutscenes, too this day, even though I know she didn't die, I tear up when I see her last stand and the slow piano version of my national anthem starts playing.

    About girls and their memories of IRL events - as far as i remember, it's stated in lore what they are constructed using PIECES OF THE ORIGINAL SHIPS combined with Wisdom cubes, and the one which were not built IRL are using blueprints instead.
    So the things which happened to them in our world happened to them also in the world of Azur Lane, as we can assume it had the same history prior to all the Sirens shinenigans.
    They even reference the fact what some events are "Reenactments" of battles which already happened, solidifying this further

    my favorite character in game (and also a ship I like quite a bit) is Admiral Graf Spee (a Deutschland class cruiser (don't know if heavy or light)) has quite a story to tell. Admiral Graf Spee was an active raider in the south Atlantic at the start of world war 2 and became a high priority target rather quickly, on the 13th of December 1939 (also known as the Battle of River Rlate) she fought 3 british cruisers (HMS Ajax, HMS Achilles and HMS Exeter) after the battle Admiral Graf Spee ran to Montevideo (Uruguay) for repairs. due to intentional misinformation on fleet strength the admiral of the Graf Spee (Hans Langsdorff) thought that the carrier Ark Royal and Battlecruiser Renown were guarding the port to sink the Graf Spee. with the 72 hour limit for repairs in neutral nations the Admiral Graf Spee was then scuttled on December 20th.
    in Azur lane she makes a lot of comments about her time in the south Atlantic (normal touch, mvp, mail reminder, return to port, affinity: crush, commission complete, victory (sortie) main screen 2 (not oathed)) and probably a few more I'm forgetting rn but yeah there's a lot of references and I consequentially looked up the story
    quite a bit longer than I expected it to be lol, have a nice day/night everyone:)

I would also argue for them being classed as armoured cruisers because they basically are the armoured cruisers of the 1890s/1900s but updated to the late 1920s.

    Excellent video! You summed up all the good things about Azur Lane that made me a fan of the game, beyond the gameplay. the game put its best foot forward in using actual history into making the ship girls interesting, full of personality, and (most importantly) potential waifu bait. I must say that as an early Eagle Union fan that the depictions of Arizona, Juneau, and Laffey won me to the game with their portrayals. Hood as the prim & proper Grand Dame, Bismarck as the steel souled, steel spined warrior haunted by the past (and her sly, sarcastic, sexy lieutenant), and the hard working but upbeat Belfast also helped to win me over as well. Four years and a campaign reboot later, I'm still playing, and still having a great time.

    Amazingly entertaining video! I’ve been wanting to make a video like this for awhile and I may do the same soon. I also love this game for its history, and your head cannon that every ship has some baggage is something I’ve subscribed to for awhile.
    My favorite ship is IJN Akagi. After her secretary quest line, I realized how f*cked up she is. She has major separation anxiety after the losses of her sister and being abandoned at midway. She was immediately shouldered with the burden as de-facto carrier flagship and now she’s seen as crazy or too prone to attachment, when in reality she’s desperate for someone to validate her and acknowledge her. Anyone who could take you away from her would be the straw to finally kill her spirit. I found an immediate calling with her to never leave her side, and when the secretary quest and some of the skins from her other voice lines dispel the myth that she wants you to be alone with her (she is willing to share you and even concede you to love another as long as you never forget Akagi) she was the perfect waif to give my second oath ring to, as Vanguard was my first (the cute British weeb had me doing summersaults and she’s just like my actual partner today)

    It’s characters like Arizona and Helena, my two early main ships used when I started, that had me really appreciating not just the voice lines but the actual voice acting.
    Arizona, historically, was lost in Pearl Harbor and it’s the Azur Lane character’s references not just to the ptsd of the event but the references to the Arizona Tears which is something that happens now where her oil is leaking and is like “tears”. She is afraid with such a traumatic event all the way until you pledge to her.
    Helena herself suffers from her own ptsd of serving in World War II. One line that gets me is “save me, ignore the enemy let them go” which references to when Helena is sunk and her crew was abandoned prematurely by her fellow strike force to chase enemy ships.
    A very carefully made game that even if fun and “plot” filled, it is actually maintains a solid referencing to history. This is by far the best gacha game that I have ever played.
    The story during events is also awesome and very interesting but does anyone pay attention to that or is it just me?

    I cannot believe you left out USS San Francisco and her special line when paired with Juneau promising no more friendly fire as a reference to Juneau's final battle when SF accidentally fired at Juneau in the blinding melee.
    And let's not forget the special line from HMS Indomitable when paired with Repulse and Prince of Wales promising not to let them down this time. Which was a reference to the fact that HMS Indomitable was supposed to be part of Force Z, but sustained damage along the way and was forced to return to port, leaving Repulse and PoW to their fate on that fateful day on December 10 to Japanese bombers.

    I'm really surprised, and kinda almost respect the fact that you didn't bring up the easiest and most famous US warship to talk about. Big E, lucky E, Cv-6, The Grey Ghost, the main girl herself, Enterprise. I have to say, AL could not have done a better job at nailing her character. The sadness she feels at the loss of her comrades, her sisters, her family. The loneliness of being the only one left, just one women verses the world. But her absolute strength and determination, her anger and patriotism pushing her forward, never backing down, never surrendering. But, also like Bismarck, the more you get to know her the more you find out about her soft side her venerable side. I love how complex they made Enterprise which is only fitting and why I love her and this game. Fun fact, the thing that introduced me to this game and my wallet to crying, was AnimeAnarchist's documentary series on Enterprise. Where all he did was go over her history (the real boats history) but with a waifu slapped on top while he spoke, and that was it, that was all it took. And man, I don't regret a thing. If anyone reading this hasn't seen them I highly recommend watching. yes they are like 4 hours a piece but pop them in here and there trust me you won't regret it.

The same was also true for the Pensacola, Portland and New Orleans classes, although the latter two were reclassified while they were still under construction. As another point from the Royal Navy to illustrate that only the gun size mattered for the distinction, the Town-class light cruisers (Belfast, Sheffield, etc) were better armoured than most of the County-class heavy cruisers (Norfolk, Suffolk, etc).

    I know you mentioned it briefly in the video, but you should really check out Kancolle if you are such a fan of historical references. I think it would be more fair to compare late KC designs to AL as the former was released 2013 and didn't have the advantage of hindsight. KC has done a much better job lately marrying ship elements and personality into their design. KC stays much more grounded especially compared to AL's recent designs and paper/ghost ships. KCs art is also more consistent since a ship class is usually handled by the same artist, so sister ships share the same uniform. This applies to even the "fanservice damaged" art(eg. how they were damaged/sunk), and subsequent retrofits. Even the voice lines are usually some reference or other, with an additional 24 hourly voice lines and event/holiday specific ones on top of the usual(battle, touch, mail, etc).
    The events and enemies are all based around real operations like Midway, doolittle, etc, with nods to historical ships/equipment by giving them bonuses. Gameplay is also far, far, far more hardcore, with permadeath, RPG like with equipment and retrofit variants(both historical and "what ifs"), and almost necessity for previously mentioned historical bonuses at harder difficulty levels. This extends further into interactions between gameplay mechanics eg. including a PBY-5A Catalina extending the range of your land base air support and "rescuing" downed planes
    Don't get me wrong, I love AL for what it is, and myself am a huge fan of IB/NP's huge riggings, but KC historical references are just flat out more accurate and numerous even compared to AL's early ones.

      So I've never played the KanColle game, I've only watched the first season of the anime. I REALLY wanted to play when I learned there was a game, but with it being region locked at the time, I wasn't able to play. Plus, this was when I was like, 14 or 15, and I didn't know of emulators or alternate ways to play back then.
      I only picked up Azur Lane as a replacement to a game called MetalWaltz; Literally just anime tank girls with turn based combat (snore). Goes by PanzerWaltz now iirc.
      Though for as long as I've been playing AL, I don't think there's any chance I'll dip into the game for KC; I'm already too deep down the Azur Lane rabbit hole lol

      @@TetravaultActualjust give it a try, isnt like people drop AL after trying KC, i think is actually the other way around, people jumping into AL and making fun of KC for being more grounded and historical focus heavy on top of saying that this is the reason why KC isnt popular unlike AL which later on would ditch the history in order to sell more T&A and it worked so far.
      Nobody remembers KanColle or gives a shit about it and its shipgirls, their history and their stories.

      My problem with KC is that it is region locked. Before AL I really wanted to play it, but with without an easy way to play it and not have good computer of my own v.s. the family computer everyone used, I just didn't. AL came out with global server and with a friend's insistince, I got into AL. With my limited playtime to play any game, still ease of inaccessible to KC, and now too deep into AL, I simply stop caring about KC that much.

    • @hennaikimono
      @hennaikimono 9 месяцев назад

      Plus, I thought KC mostly only cared about IGN ships with just a sprarse sprinkle of other foreign ships. I probably wrong here, but old news is all I know right now.

    • @kudosjp1
      @kudosjp1 9 месяцев назад

      For what it is worth, region blocking hasn't been an issue since like 2015. Just need a VPN only for account creation, which shouldn't be an issue in 2023, and afterwards is as simple as installing a chrome extension or similar viewer.
      It's obvious there isn't much overlap between the two fanbases. One being an esoteric historical roguelike spreadsheet simulator and the other a mobile gacha fanservice auto battler. Pick your poison.
      In any case, good job on your dossiers, it's always nice to see a fellow history enjoyer

But why I love AL so much more than pretty much anything else, is because of like you said in the video, the characters. I Love all the characters, and it doesn’t help that I love Naval History (mainly around WW2 Naval History) so I recognize there historical references. But I absolutely love AL for its characters and World itself. Currently have oathed 2 ships, those being my favorite ships both in real life and AL. Those are CV5 Yorktown and CL51 Atlanta.

    You clearly haven't seen KC Zuikaku's Decisive Battle costume. Also, when I think of a warship type notable for having such a long-range striking power that it usually doesn't actually see the enemy ship-to-ship, I DON'T think "get me closer, I want to hit them with my sword". And while I appreciate the reference to Laffey's rampage at Guadalcanal, the sleep-deprivation does NOT fit in with her history since she only took part in 2 night actions throughout the entire war. If anything, she should be clumsy due to how many times her captain ran aground before Guadalcanal.
    Now Nicholas has every right to be sleep-deprived since she saw constant night actions during 1943. ALL of 1943.

    • @TetravaultActual
      @TetravaultActual  10 месяцев назад +2

      Okay, I just looked it up and Decisive Battle Zuikaku goes pretty hard. Plus, giving Zuikaku a sword for AL is just a refreshing take; Most of the bow wielders in AL are from the Eagle Union (Enterprise and Wasp come to mind, plus Ranger if you count crossbows).
      Laffey's sleep deprivation more or less comes from her general voice lines, plus depiction in the anime, but I didn't know her night actions only happened twice. Now Nicholas on the other hand, that makes more sense. I guess it's really more of a case of Laffey just needs a nap and Nicholas needs to undergo a sleep study. I'll be sure to make this comparison in the future when I cover Nicholas.

      Apparently in the Chinese lines she mentions enduring two atomic bombs. The English version has her say she carried two atomic bombs instead for some reason, the game early on had some issues with translations, quite possible a bunch of the stuff dating from that time haven't been fixed.
      Regarding Prinz Eugen she seems to have something that might be survivor's guilt.
