  • Welcome to my English Garden Tour in June 2021. I am in Essex which is on the south coast of England. I live about 30 miles from London in one direction, and 30 miles from Southend in the other. I’ve always lived in Essex and have been in my current hone for just over 15 years.
    I’ve just recently cut away lots of my lawn to create an oval grass area with more space to plant in. It was an awful lot of hard work but I’m so pleased I did it.
    So far I haven’t bought that many new plants, but I’ve spent a lot of time transplanting existing shrubs and perennials from one spot to another, so I’m gradually filling up all my new borders.
    I hope you enjoy this June garden tour as I take you around and try and remember all the names of my plants!!
    If you’d like to join my Facebook page, also called The Enthusiastic Gardener, you can find it by clicking this link:

Did you pick a name for the area yet? Hope you’re ok because you give me loads of inspiration, and enthusiasm, although I’ve not yet gardened in the dark 🤣😍

      Hello there and thank you so much. But … the Boxwoods have all gone 🥲 sadly I suffered badly with box tree moths and caterpillars for about 4 years and just gave up and dug them all out about 2 months ago. I’d had enough. There’s a video all about it if you’d like to see (will make you sad though) 😍 thanks for watching xx

    Hello
    There's so much interest in your garden. Never a dull moment. I think the grass has perked up a lot compared to before you sowed the grass seeds. Your lavender is beautiful. Yes it has bloomed late. My one bloom died back ages ago. I haven't got a mahonia but i would sugggest you cut the two higher branches to keep the height. Then of course it will become bushy but you can always decide where to trim next year. It takes time with some plants to create just the shape you want. So much to comment on. Only you know what looks and feels right in your own garden. I agree it's well worth it. There's so much going on in your gorgeous garden😍😍

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  3 года назад +1

      Hello lovely Sharon, that is a good idea to cut off the two higher branches. I do absolutely love my mahonia. It’s poured down all day today so I’m having a nice lazy day cuddling my girls and watching TV. I’ve had this week off work (school half term) so it’s been fabulous. Hope you’re doing ok 😍

    Looks beautiful 🤩 Janette! I did my brother’s garden using almost all existing plants - divided all the perennials in his garden. I did plant some new plants for some colour in a corner of his garden....so i think it’s very fun gardening on a budget.
    Your rhododendron doesn’t flower? It likes acidic soil so perhaps you need to give it some diluted coffee when watering or add some sulfur to your soil.
    Your Barbary is pinkish....cute!
    Very envious of your cosmosmia bush...these tubers don’t do well in my previous garden - love their red striking blooms.

    Slugs are definitely attracted to hostas and dahlias. I don’t have any hostas. I couldn’t take the destruction or manage the slug population! But I’m using the organic slug pellets near my dahlias. I’m loving this tour. I have a lot of the plants that you have. I’m thrilled to see that. I’m in Ireland so similar zone to you.

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  3 года назад

      Hello Anya. I get what you say completely. I said I wasn’t going to do hostas ever again because of the slugs, even though they’re one of my favourite plants. But then I saw these in Tescos, right by the paying section, they knew I would be tempted when they put them there. And before I knew it they were in my trolley 🤣 but yes, so annoying. And they’ve eaten my little coleus too, which I looked after for weeks in my greenhouse. I should have known that was going to happen. Slugs are my most annoying problem. And we have lots of the same plants as you in Ireland! That’s fun to know. I must go visit Ireland, I have never been! So lovely to chat to you, have a great weekend 🥰

    It's looking lovely Janette your heucheras are gorgeous, the dreaded vine weevil ate all of mine. I think the plant you thought was a pieris is a choisya sundance. They love lots of sun and won't perform otherwise. I'd cut all of the dead off & put it in a very sunny position & you should be rewarded with lots of lovely white fragrant flowers next spring. And the plant you called wild berries? Looks like a skimmia to me, anyway that's today's lesson 😂😂😂😂. Keep up the great work!!!

Why do our favourite things get eaten? So annoying. Well it has poured down with rain all day today so I’ve been very lazy and sitting watching TV with my dogs today (I have a week off work - school half term). Hi Janette, Clearly you’ve been very busy and your lovely garden is your reward.👏 I have purchased a few plants you have in your garden which I probably wouldn’t have looked twice at in the garden centre like the huechera and dusty millers so thanks for the inspiration. I too am growing strawberries for me the first time, I would say mine are slightly ahead of yours but fingers crossed all looking good and waiting to try them. Can I suggest a perennial you might want to consider for one of your spaces! Alstroemerias, I have 4 and each one a different colour. They flower for about 3-4 mths through summer and look stunning. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next upload. Jason.

      Hi Jason, I just googled alstroemerias and you are right, very beautiful and so I will try and find myself one (or two). I’m glad to have introduced you to heucheras because they are one of my favourites, so many different colours and have year round interest, you can divide them and they very tough plants. And I like dusty millers, although they do go through the winter for me, I do like to buy new little ones each year because they grow very big and then get quite leggy. Plus they’re very cheap too. They have yellow flowers but I don’t really care for them much. Let’s hope we both have success with our strawberries too, I think I need to net them before the birds find them. Thank you for your lovely comments and of course for watching 😍

    Janette what a treat to see your garden - it is beautiful!
    I have a question about the illusion gate - did you buy it or make it? I'm thinking I might need one... it's funny how you say that every morning you walk around your garden - that's what I do and I wonder if all gardeners do that!
    I love the new oval shape of the lawn and all the new planting space - everything is flowing together so nicely. I will be putting in similar pavers to create a path to the back garden (must watch some DYI videos).
    Your plants that I can relate to best are the ones that I grow myself of course... your blue fescue grasses are phenomenal - they love it there! And your fabulous euonymous topiaries (I have you to thank for my love of euonymus. Your mahonia is amazing (I hope Una helps you figure out what the leaf browning is all about) - hose stunning berries (mine has like 10 berries total due to the harsh winter). What you call the flamingo plant we call here the dappled willow (hakuro nishiki) - I have one but it is not on standard like yours. You will love it - the various color transformations that it goes through and how graceful and playful it is. Mine is a shrub form that I limbed up a bit and it is a monster. Oh and the vanilla fraise hydrangea - I bought one last year and I hope it blooms the way it did when I bought it - most fabulous hydrangea flowers ever!
    The plants that you grow and I don't, but you've endeared them to me: the stick plant (truly special), all the lovely roses (I'm crazy over the old yellow one that's hiding). The laurel on standard!!! The lemon cypress topiaries (can you leave those outside in the winter where you live?). And your holly cloude pruned masterpiece - yes!!!!!!! And all the gorgeous clematis - I need one in my life. Lastly, love your new annual planters, esp the Bollywood mix!
    So I stumbled upon moxie gardens the other day and I love it! The guy is so talented with hardscaping and has a good eye!
    I think this is the longest comment I've ever written haha!

      Hello lovely Iza and I think that yours is maybe the longest comment I’ve received too 🤣🤣 thank you. I bought the garden illusion gate from primrose.co.uk and they have other styles too plus they do little windows and shutters etc (I have one by my fountain) and I think they’re so lovely. You could make one though I think. My friend actually came round the other day and took pictures and all the measurements and she is going to try and make her own. It’s not actually a mirror like you’d have in your house, but some sort of acrylic sheet so it is ok being outside. I love my blue fescue grass too and my standard willow, I hope it turns pink like the picture. And my euonymus topiaries and of course my new little cloud prune one. I’m glad I’ve given you some good ideas. I am trying to think of your other questions because if I try to read yours back while I’m typing, I have to ‘discard’ what I’ve written and dismiss my reply so far and start again 🤣🤣 oh yes, I can leave my lemon cypress out all year and in fact I’ve just remembered that it snowed in February so they survived that ok. I love stepping stones I have them dotted around everywhere which is very handy. So lovely chatting to you, and I hope you have a fabulous weekend 🎉🎉🎉

      Oh wow 11 fruit trees is going to be amazing!! Mine were tiny when I planted in Feb 21 and now 2 years on they are really getting established. I had cherries last summer and they’re growing again now, and first time this year I have plums growing and apples on one of them. Nothing on the other apple or the pear but I like the structure of them even without any fruit, so give them time and I probably should spray them or something but I haven’t, and this year I fertilised with rosé fertiliser (it said on packet good for fruit trees too). I’ll probably do an end June garden tour in 2 weeks time and I’ll be sure to show you then ♥️
