  • Welcome to my garden in Essex, England in May 2024.
    I’m delighted to take you around and share how my garden is doing at this time of year.
    I garden on the South East coast of England in the equivalent of a US Hardiness Zone 8.
    So far this year we’ve only had a few days of warm weather - it’s mostly been wet and quite cold - but I think we are safe to assume we are now past our average last frost date.
    I hope you enjoy my garden tour.

    Hi Janette, hope you and Richard are well.
    Thank you for your time and effort sharing your garden with the world. It looks brilliant, so much colour and huge variety. Good thing you don't have to do a stock take!
    Highlights include, the lawn looks so real and a fitting backdrop for your borders, the allums tall splash of purples, ( remember ages ago you spraying paint on the dead allium heads....genius)
    To just name a few!
    To watch your video with the rain and wind outside is a joy.
    My sun flower seeds are showing now, my peony is in full bloom but been bashed around with this weather.

      Hello there Steve!! Well I need to stick my alliums back down and try and straighten them up as we had rain for 3 days and nights straight so they took a beating. I was thinking, instead of taking them all out, I might leave a few in and spray paint them as I haven’t done that in a couple of years. I’ll see. Always lovely to hear from you and get the news from up North, I’ve been avidly watching Chelsea every day on TV. That’s been fun. You take care and always great chatting with you 💜🩵

    Good morning! You've done such a wonderful job with plant diversity in your garden! Everything looks stunning! It all looks lush and fluffy. I love it at this stage!❤ I have tons of ladybugs this year. Last year, we had a tornado come through, then a hurricane (tropical storm when it hit), and then cancer for the 3rd time. All is well now. I am slowly getting control of the garden--the weeds have taken over. But you are so right! I have so many beneficials around the garden this year. I usually get rid of all the baddies, and I was wondering where all my wasps had gotten to. They're all back in force. Wonderful to have breakfast and coffee with you in your garden!❤

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  28 дней назад +1

      Hello Dawn and oh my goodness, you had one hell of a year last year! You sound so positive despite all that and I can imagine how your garden is your bit of well being therapy 💜 I think it’s worth trying not to get rid of the baddies and just let the good ones deal with it. Jim Puttnam on Hort Tube actually said the same thing too and he’s such a great fountain of knowledge so that’s what I’m going to do again this year. It’s tempting if you spot aphids on your roses for example but I’m sure our gardens can look after themselves. I just need a little hedgehog 🦔 to come and eat all my slugs 😂 hope you’re having a great week 🩵💜

    What an abundance of plants you manage to put in a small place! Nobody can accuse you of being a minimalist 😂 I have an Aralia Elata as well, we call it Duivelswandelstok in Dutch (Devil's Walkingstick), because of the thorns, so Richard has it right 😊It has been extremely wet here in Flanders and I have to send hundreds of slugs and snails over the (eternal) 😇 fence, as I value my collection of Hosta's more 😐 Happy gardening everyone 💚

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  28 дней назад

      Hello there Ann and thanks for joining me today. My Aralia Elata never does very much (as you can see), is yours fuller? I had forgotten it’s known also as Devil’s Walking Stick. Yes, I have crammed quite a lot in 😂 I’ve pretty much run out of space now! But I do still have a few gaps here and there where the bulbs will die back. It’s taken 4 years to fill it all up though, it was quite bare when I started. Hope you’re having a great start to your week 💜🩵

    • @adevuyst1
      @adevuyst1 28 дней назад

      @@TheEnthusiasticGardener No, that Duivelswandelstok pretty much stays the same, it has died back some (as it is 30 years old), but sends out new runners. My garden also was a blank slate (it was a meadow), and is now an English cottage garden 30 years in the making...Although my style is different from yours I so enjoy your uploads as you always manage to bring your enthusiasm over! Thanks!

      I’m wondering if mine is actually an Aralia Elata Ann, now we’re chatting about it, because mine doesn’t have thorns and it doesn’t send out runners either? 🤔 I’ve always thought it was though. But goodness me, 30 years!!!! Wow. Sounds beautiful 🤩

    Hi Janette, everything looks beautiful as always. I especially love shady corner it's so green and lush. Sadly I have a wild baby rabbit staying on my property, he is adorable but loves eating my echinacea, so I had to buy fencing to encircle my echinacea. The city planted two trees on my property, a serviceberry and a heckleberry- a shade tree. I'm so excited. I cannot believe how time flies! It's been 4 years that I've been watching your videos! So thank you for being here 🩵 oh wow you have a baby rabbit!! Adorable but like you say, very annoying that he/she eats half your plants. Serviceberries are gorgeous, I’ll have to Google heckleberries, I don’t know what those are. You can have your own shady corner now. I find shady areas so much easier to plant in than full sun which I’m forever getting wrong and having to redo. All good fun though. Hope you have an amazing week Adra my friend 💜🩵

    Thank you for your lovely tour of your garden. I’m very impressed with all the weeding you must have done! Your beds look very lovely and tidy. It makes anll your plants stand out really nicely. I’m always behind with the weeding and the weeds grow and flower and probably will be even more next year. Your garden is looking absolutely lovely! It’s funny that you should mention Jim Putnam, because your garden sort of reminds me of his. Instead of waves or drifts of the same plant, his garden, and yours, is filled with so many individual, beautiful plants, and I love that! I hope that one day my garden will be a mix of the two styles with lots of shrubs of the same variety, but areas of specimen plants. Love,love,love your May 24 garden. The planting compliments each other so well. Very aptly named Lancelot😂,guarding woodland courtyard,which reflects your fun loving personality. My ninebark is at the exact stage of yours. First year of flouring and i can't wait to see the blooms. I had no success with fruit trees or bushes. As you mentioned, now if a plant thrives without too much maintenace,they have a place in my garden. Both of us seem to grow an enormous amount of hardy plants anyway. And you can plan things too, and go on Pinterest or RUclips and look for new ideas. 7 weeks will soon pass. Glad to give you the allium leaves tip. I might spray paint a few of mine this year once they’ve finished (I haven’t done that for a couple of years) as I’d only be pulling them out anyway. Do have a good rest and put your feet up. Your garden is looking really lovely Janette. I have a lot of Alliums in my garden this year as I really liked them in yours ever since I came across your channel. I've only found out recently that you can remove their straggly leaves. It really improves the appearance doesn't it? Hasn't it been a lovely weekend? The sunshine has really made my seedlings grow thank goodness. Have a great week.

      Hi Wendy and thank you. I only found out this time last year you could remove the allium leaves too. So much tidier looking I think. I can’t bear all the leaves from spring bulbs, they look too messy. It’s been truly gorgeous the last 4 or 5 days, it makes everyone feel so much more cheerful. 😀 glad your seedlings are thriving too, I have more zinnias popping up since I filmed this tour last Thursday night. Hope you’re having a great Monday 💜🩵

    The garden is looking absolutely wonderful. All the plants look really well, apart from one small conifer I noticed you jumped over, very sensibly 😀.
    The Anemones have recovered really well but they will soon start dying back for the summer/winter, back for the spring next year. The Polypodium cambricums will also soon start to yellow and die back until the late summer, but they will be hidden by all the other things in the pots.
    It looks like you are going to have some decent fruit as well. All the fruit trees are looking good. Even the Apple only seems to have one badly effected branch. If you do decide to move it, have a look at the Chilean Lantern tree - Crinodendron hookerianum. Dark red hanging bell-like flowers in late may and dark slightly blue/green linear leaves all year. There is also a pink flowered form but I have not seen it and a white flowered species I once grew from seed and flowered Crinodendron Patagua, but it does not have any where near as many flowers as hookerianum plus is difficult to find.
    As always, a fabulous video.

      Hello Mark and I have screenshotted your comment so I can look back on your great suggestions. I had no idea the anenomies will be dying back. Should I leave them in their pots, or pot them up elsewhere? Yes, you spotted my dying PICEA Glauca Daisy’s White which is headed for the compost bin unfortunately. Not a success story. Thanks for explaining about the dying back ferns too, I thought I had been killing them with too much love 😂 hope you’re having a great week so far. Thanks always for all your great help 💜🩵

      Regarding the anemones, I would leave them until they flower (hopefully and expectedly) in the spring, then you can decide exactly where you want to put them. For this year you could always put annuals or some sparsely rooted temporary plants in once the anemones have gone back.

    Hi Janette! Your May garden is looking lovely as usual 🥰. I love all the variety of plants you have and different combinations. Can you use another Japanese maple or a pagoda dogwood to replace your apple tree over in shady corner?

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  27 дней назад +1

      Hi Lauren and thank you so much. I did try a dogwood one year but it died, I think they are zones 3-7 and I’m a 8, I’d normally give that a go but it says they do need 4-6 hours of sun a day and that area is always in the shade. I like the idea of a Japanese maple too but it does get quite windy there sometimes abc I’m not sure they like that much. But I’m going to have a good look round my garden centre at all their small trees to see if there’s anything suitable. Quite excited about that now I’ve made the decision the apple has to go. Anyway, I hope you’re having a really great week so far 🤗🩵💜

      @@TheEnthusiasticGardener A small world! Yes, fourth generation gardener. Our family have always loved gardening alongside other careers, but made it our profession. Dad and I worked on various farms around England. Then due to mums health, living out in the sticks wasn't so good, so we moved and Dad went into gardening and at one point we worked in adjacent 9 acre gardens in Kent. We also tended Hever churchyard and Lord and Lady Astors resting place within the grounds of Hever Castle. My Grandad tended a Country House garden in Norfolk and my Great Grandad was a gardener at Sandringham. So between the four generations, we have tilled quite a bit of England. I am due to retire next month, but won't be letting my customers down for some time yet, hopefully! Although I might spend a little more time out birding!

      Hello there and thanks for watching. Yes I think alliums are a good bridging gap after daffodils and then tulips and before the roses in June. And then of course we can have annuals for the rest of the summer. I need to plant more perennials I think, although they usually only flower for a few weeks. @topaz3468 oh yes! I’m the same, first job in 1978 with a manual typewriter and a telephone on our desks. We didn’t even have a fax machine or photocopiers back then. I was one of the first to use a word processor with the floppy discs. No emails, internet, mobile phones, nothing. You’d post a letter and wait a week for a reply! Incredible thinking back to that now. And as kids we played out all day long on our bikes and our Mums didn’t have a clue where we were all day, we just went home when we got hungry 😂
