I saw a poster that said, there are only two fighting units in the American military: The Army and the Navy. The Air Force is a "corporation". The Marine Corp is a "cult". I don't really agree with any of those statements...except maybe for the Air Force. When I was in it... I DID think of it as a "corporation"...and was damn proud of it!
During the Vietnam War we loaded Mk 82's, Mk 84's, and the Cluster bombs on the B-52's and it seemed like there was many more bombs loaded internally, and externally back then. Those bombs have to be plugged into the system, and I am assuming that only one or a few bombs are dropped on one target.
Sidney Mathious Carpet bombing isn’t really needed anymore. Lost quite a few B-52 over Vietnam that way. These Jdams can be dropped at a higher altitude and are gps guided to help reach their target on the ground. The B-52 can carry them internally and externally.
Of the approx. 13 variants of the B-52(including all the various prototype builds) because you were working during the Vietnam War and because it seemed as though the B-52 you were working on appeared to hold a lot more bombs, you were probably working on a B-52 "D" variant. Of the 744 B-52s built, there were 170 of the "D" variants built, making the D variant the 2nd most common B-52 variant. Only the B-52 "G" was built in greater numbers with 192 G's being built from 1959 through 1961(50 in 1959, 106 in 1960 and 37 in 1961-the D models entered service with the US AirForce February, 13 1959 ). The D variants numbers 170 with: 1 built in 1956, 92 in 1957 and 77 built in 1958. The D variant entered service with the USAF in December 1956. The D B-52 model was the only B-52 variant to have the "Big Belly" modification which allowed for carpet bombing over Vietnam. The ONLY B-52 operating today is the B-52 H, after the nuclear capable B-52G was retired for New Start treaty. The remaining B-52 H's are now kept at a certain number. As of June 2019 the current B-52H inventory is. Inventory: Active force, 58 (test, 4); ANG, 0; Reserve, 18 Everytime a B-52 is lost, another B-52 is brought out of the desert, remanufactured to B-52H specs and put back into duty. Keeping the B-52 at full strength is important to retain US strength as the B-52 is under control of the NEW START nuclear treaty. The B-52 H along with the equipment to support guided weapons. It can launch SINGLE bombs at single targets. The B-52H and the B-1B Lancer alternate being deployed to the Middle East for use in Close Air Support. Guys on the ground callout fire missions, the B-52 can self designate its own targets using its own Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod. She has also recently gotten the LINK-16 capabilities.

Yes. MK-84 GP Bombs(the USAF variant, Navy's is designated BLU-117. Same body, different explosive filler.) is the 2000lbs version. These have a JDAM guidance assembly strapped on.
Double handling there, the bomb loader should be able to lift the bombs directly from the supply trailer instead of using the 2nd unit as a crane .easy mods to make it possible.
Who exactly are you to question the method in which these highly trained airmen are loading these bombs onto the B-52? Are you a munitions maintenance specialist?

So the electrical connections they hook to these bombs when they attach them to the rack, do they have like a break away type mechanism where it connects to the bomb or does it just rip the entire wire harness out of the rack when it drops away?
Yes it does. When you hook the lanyard onto the HSAB (heavy stores adapter beam) the connector releases as the bomb falls away. We had different cables for different configurations. The jdam unit on the back of the bomb would get data from the weapons computer for gps backed up by INS so that in the event of satellite signal loss the INS would maintain targeting coordinates. The cables were retained and used repeatedly.
