Watched that video, thought, hmm I never thought about making underpainting in my sketchbook, I could try and OMG THANK YOU! I don't quite understand that kind of magic, but coloring became SO MUCH EASIER traditionally! Kinda sad, I can't clip a picture of that to this comment. The base brings everything together, I don't need to mix that many shades of colors and now the longest part is to get it to dry, heh. No problem, I've been promised an old hair dryer from my mother, so like ultimate fix, but can't thank you enough💚💚💚💚
Oil paint is so fun! I jumped into it earlier this year and honestly it SEEMS way more scary than it actually is. I'm sure You''ll have a great time with it, or at least have fun learning about it!
I feel like a big think (at least for me) with underpaintings is that it gets your brain working more creatively with color schemes when you introduce colors you wouldnt typically use, it can lead to a much more energetic and colorful style of painting which i think is so cool
I generally just pick any colour that I like for the underpainting 😂 This is really helpful and has definitely reminded me that I need to put more thought into it ❤
i just got into gouache and it's still a bit intimidating because of values and how they shift when it dries but thank you so much for the tips ! im actually excited to apply them :)
I like using pink or orange all the time because they give that life-light kinda feel when they poke through acrylics and stuff like that. I forget what art period I got that from but it’s from something lmao
I just recently discovered your channel and I've been so inspired in multiple different ways. One video where you drew some pothos plants inspired my first painting in I don't know how long. I found this video while looking into how I can make this painting work and I think I am ready to put brush to canvas (I know I should probably practice on paper but I'm more of a dive all in kind of person lol). I just wanted to say thank you for your videos, sharing your techniques, and great advice!
ive been following your instagram for YEARS, and i cant believe i only just found out you have a youtube??? im so excited to binge watch your vids now omg!! luv ur art
Watching this before class and I have to say love the insight into your process. I have always favored digital art so haven’t used under painting a lot but after this i really want to start using it more.
Hi Shay! I watched this video while doing hand studies for a life drawing assignment, thanks for the company! I would highly recommend trying a bright red underpainting for a subject with some cool tones in it (like ultramarine or green), the result is always super funky and I always have fun doing them.
discovering your channel gave me the courage and motivation to pick up drawing again. i used to draw every single day from as early as i can remember, but self-criticism and doubt prevented me from carrying it on throughout my uni years. i feel really encouraged by your videos and i've started keeping a sketchbook devoted to re-learning anatomy/figure drawing. thank u and keep making amazing content!
Hey shay!!! Every time I would pass your studio I was in awe of your color choices.I struggle with it and it was always mind boggling. So glad you made the video into your process will definitely experiment with this. 💖💖 you’re doing amazing so happy for you!!!
HI LIAMEL!!! that means so much to me!! Thank you so much!! and I can’t wait to post part two, a lot more in depth process in that one. Hope you are doing well, wishing you the best💖💕
Don’t think I have every watched a video so soon after posting! Not even and hour! But honestly such a blessing to watch your videos!! You are really inspiring me to pick up my sketchbook and draw for more than just planned or business art !!
Shay! I don't know if you would be willing but I'm like crossing my fingers and hoping you might. Would you ever make a video on how you record your traditional art? I love doing traditional art, but it isn't necessarily as easy to record and show off as digital art but your setup is always so lovely and cute! Do you have any tips if not a video? You inspire me to want to make oc videos! Or just nicer oc reels because I think sketchbooks can hold a lot more love then digital art sometimes. TY for another awesome video and I can't wait for the next!
Thank you so much, and thank you for watching! I would love to make a video about how I make my videos and film! I’ll add it to my video idea list, hopefully I’ll get to it soon!
This is so silly but you’ve really inspired me, and this video is so so helpful! I’m pretty scared of painting because of the permanence of art on traditional rather than digital, but your videos really remind me that art is learning! (also I totally shared your channel to all my friends in college, we adore you!! ❤)
I love your content, so chill and rly helpful!! I've never been into painting traditionally, but I recently started digital painting, and I've been struggling with color. Can you add some digital coloring tips into part 2? Having that full range of color in digital art can be sooo overwhelming when trying to pick colors for a piece.
Until then I would really recommend making a predetermined color palette! Limiting your colors can really help and make things less overwhelming, and you can find premade palettes through color generators 💖 (I think coolors.com is the one I like to use)
I'm watching this now, a week later, at almost 10 p.m. Also - you 're BRAVE! I cannot even imagine working with anything acrylic and seeing that acrylic gouache you showed there made me so nervous I forgot what I was about to sketch o_o (I don't like the inability to use water on top to change a thing or two later)
late night crew!! 💪💖 i just like the fact that you can paint on top!! It is frustrating that it dries really fast but I’m so used to it now it’s not that much of an issue :)
then theres me that just uses pink all the time because i think its cute 😍😍
pink underpaintings are the best tbh💖💖💖

Erin Hanson does an absolutely stunning job of letting the underpainting shine through!
I never heard of underpainting in my 16 years of doing art. Thank you for introducing me into the concept. I‘ll definitely try it!
I’m happy to share it with you!! 💖 thank you for watching!
38:24 big chungus will never not be funny. always makes me chuckle
I always giggle when I read it out!!😂

I’m so happy I could help! Make sure to stick around for the next part! There are even more tips in that video 💖
I like using pink or orange all the time because they give that life-light kinda feel when they poke through acrylics and stuff like that. I forget what art period I got that from but it’s from something lmao
Exactly!! Kinda makes everything glow and gives things warmth!! Love using pink and orange as underpaintings!

AH thank you!! I try to promote my channel more on instagram but sometimes it gets lost, so thank you for finding me!💖💕
Loved the video and I’ve definitely learned that something. Because now i know I have a strong preference for blue and green under painting 🐟🐟🐟
OOOO love that!! They really add such a cool (literally) effect in paintings 💖
Watched this while I did my own painting studies and it was really helpful and fun to paint along with someone :]
so happy to provide you company while you paint 💖
Watching this before class and I have to say love the insight into your process. I have always favored digital art so haven’t used under painting a lot but after this i really want to start using it more.
Yayyyy!!! You can literally do the same technique with digital! Just make a separate color layer for your underpainting and just paint on top :)
@@sketchesofshay yes will definitely be trying that!
always love watching your videos, they give me an instant boost of inspiration!! magenta underpainting my beloved....
YES MAGENTA !! so good, and thank you for watching!
