How Russia’s Blockade of Black Sea Ports Is Hitting Ukraine’s Economy | WSJ

- Since its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been attacking Kyiv’s economy by taking aim at its crucial ports on the Black Sea. Moscow’s economic war against Ukraine has caused Ukrainian exports to plunge while allowing its own exports to reach record highs. NATO countries have helped establish solitary shipping corridors for Ukrainian use as a result of Russia withdrawing from the grain deal that was brokered by the UN.
WSJ’s Shelby Holliday explains how Moscow’s strategy has worked, and what the West is doing to try and counter its blockade.

What about Eastern European countries (Poland and others) embargo on Ukranian agricultural products?
Lol, that's different
@@dkrawk8309 It's different because it's the EU, and not Russia. How hypocritical is that?
@@loumcast it's not hypocritical, it's deamocracy
@@dkrawk8309 NO, it's hypocritical because the reason Poland banned Ukrainian agricultural products was because they were selling them cheaper, and it was affecting their farmers. Poland on the other hand can flood the Ukrainian market with their goods, and because they belong to the European Union, Ukraine has to take it. Ukraine doesn't want to complaint to Poland or the EU, even if it affects its industry, because they want to join the European Union, so by complaining the doors to the EU might shut close, so what do they do, they put up with it. That has nothing to do with democracy and more to do with Polish hypocrisy.

Wait.. what about the economic war of the USA? Sanctions??
You mean the normal sanctions that people put on countries that invade other countries? Or would you say the UN and USA are waging economic war in N Korea?

Nope that's russian propaganda, russia is losing to europes poorest country.

Why does EU so considered about Ukrainian grain? Its not their business
Can the ships travel safely in the NATO countries’ water territory?
yes
Si, el problema es en las aguas de Ucrania donde si podrian ser atacados por Rusia y protegerlos con barcos de la OTAN seria muy arriesgado de escalar el conflicto involucrando a toda la OTAN.
The excuse is that if Russia attacks ships (both civilian and military) within NATO’s Exclusive economic area (EEA), then it gives NATO a legitimate reason to shoot back. The US has done this several times already in the Strait of Hormuz (between Saudi Arabia and Iran) where Iran has threantened and actually shot oil tankers.
If ships sail within NATO’s EEA, russian ships engaging civilian ships within this corridor may get shot at back, as such an attack can be considered an attack on the country where it happened. A declaration of war may be avoided, instead they can just pledge to protect the civilian ships going within NATO EEA and respond accordingly to any threat posed to those ships. It makes good propaganda for NATO.
A lot of NATO ships have various systems to counter missile threats, so it isn’t unreasonable to think that a convoy of civilian vessels escorted by NATO ships could make it out in one piece even if they were (moderately) shot at.
Yeah that's what she said
@@tokroni They already are.
Great video, with intense eyebrows. That's how you know it's important 😉
Only thing she missed is why Russia pulled out of the deal? It's because so-called allies never held their part of deal. It was basically a concession by Russia for a year.
Sure they did.
yeah, it was a good will movement just like the Moska to the botton of the sea
how shall we mark places on the map?
americans: with candy of course!
candy pretending to be vegetables lol
And why didn't they say why Russia broke the grain deal?
Kiev was supplied with weapons on these ships
It's not the main reason. Russia was keeping it's obligations in this deal for almost a year but the West hadn't delivered a single demand of Russia - didn't lift embargo on Russian fertilizer held up in European ports, didn't connect Russian Agricultural Bank to SWIFT, didn't allowed Russian ships with Russian grain to operate in European ports.
every ship was inspected by russian troops, so how come weapons were there?
in 100 thousand tons of grain, you can hide a tank and it will not be found@@PrystupaPaul
I can't tell if the props are more subliminally candy or pharmaceutical coded
Would you also explain why Russia retreated from the grain deal?
Why doesn’t Ukraine give Romania is commercial fleet under a 2-year lease. Russia can’t strike these ships and they can resume their operations (feeding millions with grain exports). When the war is over, they go back to being Ukrainian.
Unless, had Russia previously individually identified all ukranian vessels. Those vessels eventually would have to depart from odessa and ukranian ports and navigate south through the blockade lines. I do not see it feasible.
it is not about who owns the ships, but what waters are being sailed. Russia has recently boarded a Turkish ship that wanted to go to a Ukrainian port to take some cargo and denied its entry.
El problema no es de que nacionalidad sea el barco si no entrar a la zona restringuida por Rusia.
That’s very simple to answer … long before this conflict started ukraine considers Romania as a hostile state … to prove my opinion bare in mind that in the western ukraine that borders Romania before 1991 it was home to some 2,5 million Romanian ethnics but between 1991 to 2023 is now home to no more than 200k Romanian ethnics … for me the help than Romania is giving to ukraine is like high treason … and a question from me to you: why should Europe sacrifice the farmers community to save ukraine’s? ukraine received financial and military aids somewhere around 200-250 billions whereas European farmers received how much? A couple of hundreds millions? And the thing is not that somebody has but doesn’t want to help but when you hear the grafting scandals in ukraine well that hurts and that’s way me personally I want to see ukraine thrown under the bus and all ukrainian migrants shipped back to ukraine
Thats not how shipping works anymore, this is hot it worked before WW2. Now ships are mostly not owned by the countries that are trading anymore, instead most officially belong to a few small countries like Panama
This is slightly better than most general news reporting about shipping but there are some important elements that are missing with time spent on silly graphics which really aren’t very informative.
Like west elements? I think you’re imagining things explain those elements to us
It’s about choices.
It is not about economy, it is about weapons that are coming to Ukraine in those ships.
Kiev doesn't have allies. What they have are countries using them to fight Russia.
And it clearly shows that owning naval base in Crimea allows Russia to project power over Black Sea. Ukraine was doomed to lose Crimea when they started questioning conditions for the Russian naval base in Sevastopol.
But soon there will be no fleet in Russia. How many ships have already been sunk?
@@kovbakostia How many ships did Russia lose out of 273 ships? Make me laugh with your number? Let me tell you, for 1.5 years 2 old ships that no one needs! lol
But Crimea is Ukraine. Still Ukraine. Temporarily occupied, but still Ukraine, as recognized by all UN members.

Funny because everyone is buying Russian wheat and oil
Not really that easy. China and India are more than happy to buy Russian oil. Why is this any of our business? We have way too many problems here. And NO, we can't do both at the same time. Look at the latest FEMA money request. It's tied money going to Ukraine. When did they become the 51st state?
Does Russia really a transport war, destroying the ways for military cargo and why or why not? Is this war effective? Would be a good theme for a next observation.
and noone talks about peace is the only solution
Of course it is. The devil is in the details though. An unstable peace isn't really peace if it means inevitable future war.
The West seems content with the death of billions, so long as our oligarchs are richer than China's.

In my opinion, the problem is much older than that The conflict in Ukraine began in 2014 and was triggered by several factors. One of them is the political instability in the country, which deepened after the Maidan protests in 2013-2014. These protests led to the overthrow of President Viktor Yanukovych and his subsequent expulsion from the country. One of the main reasons for the start of the war in Ukraine is the contradiction between the pro-Russian regions in the east and south-east of the country and the rest of Ukraine, which seeks a closer relationship with the European Union and NATO.
Wrong. Nobody forced Yanukovich to flee to Russia to his master. There was no "overthrow" and "expulsion", he made the decision to flee and he did. And there are no contradictions in Ukraine, it's made up by Kremlin propaganda. Your whole post is Russian propaganda.
2014 was merely the paradigm shift of the previous national instability. The Orange revolution in the 2000s and the politics of the 1990s were the real starting points, if not the Novorossiyan colonization under the Russian empire in the 18th and 19th centuries. In reality, the moment Russia annexed Crimea, and to a lesser extent created frozen conflicts in the Donbas, effectively absorbing Ukraine's Pro-Russian part of the population, Ukraine's entry into the Western orbit was guarantied. And that paradigm shift was what caused Putin to invade in 2022 - he no longer had any significant domestic support in Ukraine to exert his power with, so he tried to "restore" the earlier Pro-Russian status quo by force.
@@serebii666you do realize that the majority of "population" in most countries are a herd of sheeps that beleive everything they've been told on TV and have a very short memory. Today they hate Russia because TV says so, tomorrow they will hate someone else.
And you are talking about a country that voted for a president because he was a good president on a TV show ( he also ran as a president of peace and promised to make a deal with Russia, but who cares)
You are leaving out the role my American government played in the Maidan coup?
Victoria Neuland selected the new ruler, on a recorded message which is available for all to hear.
That same leader, appointed by us, is quoted as saying, "our children will go to schools, theirs will sit in bomb shelters. That is how we will win this war."
