Fun fact: "horde" actually comes from the middle-Mongolian word for temple. It seems to have been extended to mean any large, public gathering place for fellowship, and then (in Turkish, in particular) it was retracted again to mean a camp, and then a group of Mongolic nomads who would normally set up such a camp. It comes from the same root as "Urdu," the name of the language, which is a contraction of the phrase "zaban-i-urdu," meaning "language of the camps."

Watch the video again. Most of the area that has been in dispute was not part of Ukraine until it was placed under the administration of the Ukraine SSR in 1922 (Donbas to Odessa) and 1954 (Crimea). These areas have been Russian since Catherine the Great. The Ukrainian Civil War, which started after a United States backed overthrow of the elected Ukrainian government in 2014, is a war for independence of Russians from the yoke of Ukrainian ultranationalist rule.
FYI, the modern international name of Ukraine’s capital is Kyiv. Kiev is the Russian name. It literally means “Kyi’s”, with the name referring to the legendary founders of the city: the brothers Kyi, Shchek, and Khoryv and their sister Lybid. There are three hills in the city named after the brothers. The sister had a river named after her, but you’d be hard-pressed to find it these days, as it’s mostly underground or bordered by concrete thanks to railroad construction
The country where the cities are located gets to decide what the international community calls their cities. It’s why the capital of China is called Beijing in English instead of Peking. It’s the same name but in a more precise transcription

Fun fact: "horde" actually comes from the middle-Mongolian word for temple.
Thanks) I wish you all the best from Kharkiv
From omnipotent to impotent,
FYI, the modern international name of Ukraine’s capital is Kyiv.

Thanks for the video!
I'd like to admit that only the big cities in the East of Ukraine have a problem of russification now. In small towns and villages people are more likely to speak Ukrainian and identify themselves as Ukrainians. Overall, even in big cities, there are very few people who identify themselves as russians, even though they can use russian language in their everyday life.
The name of the prince of Kyiv Rus was VOLODYMYR (as written on St. Sophia church walls as well as in old docs) and not Vladimir as you say.
Really just different varians of Vladimir, the norse called him Valdemar.
it cannot be, cause ukraine had not been invented that time
Feel this video is about to get a LOT more views....
I would like to point out some innacuracies.
At the beginning of the video:
Sevastopol didn't exist until 1783.
At the time the nearest large Greek settlement was Chersonesus, which was located on the eastern part of the Crimean penisula.
Later on you show a map of 1789 with Odessa which wasn't around in 1789, as it was founded in 1794.
Also, the Deluge refers to the Swedish 1650-1655 invasion of Poland-Lithuania and it _alone._ The Khmelnytskyi Uprising is only known as, well, the Khmelnytskyi Uprising.
by Potemkin bet
There were actually other settlements before Tsardom went by and claimed to have created new cities where Dnipro and Odesa stand
@@ОлександрКорольов-л1х not many people there it was emptystepps in Novarussia and nobody in Ekatarinaslava" French Du de Richelieu was once governor of all Novarossia
I thought Greeks have settled in Ukraine since ancient times and founded Odesa?
Thank you so much, this video is more important now than ever in the wake of the Ukraine War.
Ukrainian statehood has two points of reference.
The first is January 1918, when the Central Rada proclaimed the independence of the Ukrainian People's Republic. The second one is August 1991, after secession from the USSR.
Note that you and I are talking about Ukraine as a separate independent state. In this case, we are not discussing ancient times, princes, etc. This is the same as we would not talk about Romania, for example, but about Wallachia).
Today the history unfolds a new chapter
I`m Ukrainian and i approve story in this video accept couple of things.
1) Donetsk and Luhansk region occupation after the annexation of Crimea is not mentioned.
2) Spelling of Kyiv and Odesa. (The way it is spelled in the video is a consequence of language repression. Kiev and Odessa is the way russians spell them to make it closer to russian language)
Thank you for creating such a nice content and waiting for updated version after our wining!

Who is here after Putin's invasion?
It's really nice to see someone from the West trying really hard to present the history of the Ukraine, but I bet you were already told that even in this remake many things were not really correct. Yaroslavl is written Ярославль in Cyrillic, and Тимерёво is read as roughly Timieryovo. Болгарка means either female Bulgarian, or, in informal speech, circular saw, the capital of Hazar khanate being written Булгар in Cyrillic. Scandinavians around Kyiv were not expelled by Slavs, but assimilated in a matter of several generations. After that I've just decided to give you a like for the effort and pass on the video.
Thanks and best luck!
Thank you for this video, for me as for Ukrainian, its so nice to see how many people are interested in the history of Ukraine and their point of view on it. Even though quite a few things are missing, the video is still informative and very well done, thank you. Glory to Ukraine!
Expect a spike in views for this video. Well done btw
You better update this video.
