Hi folks, this is a "cold climat" ration. It is "reinforced" in hot edible/drinkable products, higher amount of calories and heating stuff. It is not only provided to the french foreign legion but to all units that are fighting in harsh warfare condition, like Alpes Mountains.
Alps, Pyrenees, Saint Pierre et Miquelon in Canada and Kerguelen island lol
Been waiting for this
Thanks for the review Nathan
As usual from the French ....a quality ration
but I reckon the French Foreign Legion Commando writing on the bag is all that distinguishes it from any other French 24 hour ration
Great video. Apart from the missing blue cheese and plastic packaging it’s a standard French RCIR. I’ve used the French RCIR in the field and the standard cardboard box perishes quickly when wet: this is a cold weather ration so more likely to get wet from snow or sleet. The fact it’s a cold weather ration also explains why it has the extra energy bars (more calories since you burn more in the cold), soup and hot drink packets and two Esbit stoves. The extra soup and hot drinks allows more hot brews which are pretty much life savers on alpine or extreme cold weather ops.
..the French sure eat well, with an exotic menu, good one, keep safe...
The European countries menus are highly influenced by the colonial past and the interchange of people amongst the countries in Europe.
"Phillip, take a whiff of that." Something tells me he's heard that before.
I've a girlfriend say that.
Thanks again for another good one sir
Thank you Nathan . These French food videos always make me hungry.LOL. It is your turn to dump the cat box. HA HA HA.
The chocolate biscuits definitely caught my eye! Lol what a wild animal would use the coco biscuits w the main 😂👍🏻🤮
The coffee?
Nice ration! Can't wait to try mine. Just got it today. Chili Con Carne just the individual ration. Didn't know about this one.
Nice review
This is a huge ration pack. The French like the Italians know there food.
Nate I have said it 100 times before but I want to say it again. You have done so much to bring Phil out of his shell I now look forward to him assisting you on these shows. I do really enjoy hearing a layman talk. so many of us had to eat these . Though when I was flying B-52 during Vietnam we would have given our right arm to have food this good, the best we would ever get was canned left over Korean rations.
Phil keep up the great work you are a wonderful addition to Nate and we here that always watch enjoy hearing from you - even if it is only a few words. Someday you need to give us feed back about how much you have learned from Nate and if you enjoy helping with his pod casts. You could maybe do one on your own where you have to struggle through some odd meal pieces that Nate pulls together. I think it would be fun to show that anyone can make these in case of hard times or a disaster so that they could stay strong. Again guys great job and may you be able to keep it up for many years to come.
Thank you for watching David , i will make sure he sees this comment
@@NathansMRE Thanks Nate he really add to you and your already great content he is going to make a great side kick over time. I have seen the difference over the last 6 months.
@@davidvincent1093 Hello David, this is Phillip. First and foremost, thank you for your service. Reviewing these rations has been interesting and eye opening in regard to all of variations of food that the military eats. Good video suggestions by the way.
@@NathansMRE Phil keep up the great learning curve and thank you for responding to me
Yes indeed, looks like a good ration for the elite FFL for their troops. One thing I learned in both my Military service times in both the U.S and Estonian militaries, is that a good pair of Scissors is the better tool to open up MRE packaging so as to cleaner cuts and not damaging the plastic packaging for reuse in the field.
They just double up some normal RCIR components to reach 4000 calories and called it cold climate ration. If you are looking for those go to Ebay and find Serge
Yeah I tried the oriental salad cold and it seemed like it’d be way better warm. This is the same menu as the RCIR 5
The "Daddy" brand sugar was a nice touch. Clever.
Hey Nathan, here's a tip from an old soldier ... start shufflin' way earlier in the cans to avoid blacking the bottoms lol :) Good show buddy :)
Narhan..and Phillip?! Isn't he your protege/assistant? Give him some props! Great camera work and another opinion. Would like more info.
Those mains are giant !
JCVD was in the French Foreign Legion in Lionheart
Do you finish these rations after your done filming? This one looked pretty decent
Musili or Oatmeal should always be hot if possible. When you wake up in the morning your metabolism is low so your body temperature is not quite up to snuff. Something hot with some sort of sugar will help you out greatly when first waking up and get the body moving.
The Oriental Salad has HAIL DAMAGE
I am wondering if the duplicates are intentional or not. I like the french rations but wish they would add something other than muesli for breakfast every day.
If I was a long-haul truck driver, I’d have a several of these with me.
Cool there was 2 heaters in it accident or on purpose? All the food looked amazing I love the French components and mains. That is another rare find. Awesome Review Nathan.
2 heaters because it's a cold climate ration. It's for melting snow or drinking more hot beverages.
No there was a mess up during packaging, too many napkins and sugar stuff.
The six fire starter tablets we get are sufficient for cold climate, with just one you can heat one meal and the hot drink you want to accompany it, usually.
@@jetaddicted you're probably right.
Hey Nathan like your channel a lot. Watch them every chance I get. Heads up on something else I saw maybe you should investigate. At bigclivedotcom,I don't know if you are aware of it but the one I saw was astonishing. It was called a Scottish army ration. Two things surprised me. One was a bottle of Scotch and the other was a nuclear ration heater. It had a tiny rod of plutonium in a glass vial and a control rod. Mind-blowing 🤯. You should check it out and see if this is the real deal.
My latest French commando ration was also very bland. I expected a lot more from an in date ration.
I would love to get my hands on some of those rations.... I've always loved eating them....me and my cousin would sneak around and eat his dad's....
I think I would have mixed up a few things. I would probably have mixed a coffee into the cocoa mix, and used THAT instead of hot water to make the Musili with.😉😋
Today..... “we have a very special ration.” They’re all special, eh?
Is that a tablecloth? Whatever it is i dig it. 😎
It is for two meal periods
How do you order these foreign MRE’s
looks tasty

Hi Nathan it's shagwardo again a new poster I have a MRE to post I am just trying to download it
Maybe I might have missed it, but when did you get your partner...Philip..to come on down? This is a lot nicer as now we have 2 viewpoints.
We usually put the cocoa powder, creamer and coffee into one cup instant Wiener melange. 👍
Add hot chocolate to chocolate musli cereal. I bet it would work.
The Meusli isn't crisp after you soaked it in hot water.
This oriental looks a bit weird. And I'm French. "Oriental" means anything, really, from a chinese inspired dish with bizarre spices to some mediterranean/middle eastern salad with olive oil and tomatoes, can be anything.
It's edible i'm sure but good ?
You and Steve 1989 never served I guess. You wouldn’t want to eat rations after you’ve gotten out. Or used the knives you use to open them
ration packers snacked on the bleu cheese while packing that bag
A hot salad is nearly finished. Yes. My blood is boiling.
Such nice shit this ration)))
Crap the blue cheese is missing. You'd have on pissed off french soldier there.
The tea is say-LON
Can I make and mail you a "Hawaiian Ration" box with an aloha shirt (need your size)?
Sure, im a 2x
@@NathansMRE can you send an address and I will get together a couple of weeks. This is going to be awesome. I will avoid foods with onions and garlic. I really enjoy your channel and it will be an opportunity to show my gratitude. Thanks
I can find no female MRE reviewers. I wanted to be one of the first, but it appears to be a "men's club" approach to procuring actual military MREs. 😔
Actually there's quite a few women reviews. Kaylynn is one of them. I just got a French MRE on Amazon. Foreign mre, Minotaur trading company and Mre mountain. Just a few places to buy from. Hope you start reviewing them. I have a couple to do. Tracy Phillips sent me some. I have to say MRE reviewers are a great community!
@@wyomingadventures awesome! Ty for the info. I'll check them out. 😊
Except that the "ravioli" is actually tortellini.
Sounds like a 48 hour ration
R.I.P to the blue cheese
Huge ration. To bad about the blue cheese.
More toyota stuff
That was a strange and confusing French ration. I would love to hear the rational behind the component selection.
7:57 Sugar Daddy
What made them MRE of the French Foreign Legion that's twice you have said this lol more like French armed forces MRE not legion
It's click baiting. There are no "Foreign legion ration". The ffl use regular equipment and ration of the french army.
Hi I am shagwardo I have a review video out and would like some feedback thank you
WHERES THE SNAILS
Escargot! 🐌😜
First lol :)

@@dubc3615 Wow you here too buddy?? ;-)
WTFO!? There is no connection to the Legion! Except maybe, being a "commando" ration? As early 80s rations were more suited in calories to french regulars who were less active. They were one box for 24 hours, like this is. Pathetic compared to what USA gives for 24 hours. Granted, late 80s MREs were also pathetic compared to now. The french are always cheaping out on the military, as are most europeans. french garrison food was terrible and starvation level. In the field, there were "fresh" rations that had to be prepared and eaten collectively, and also canned collective rations. The NCOs and officers got served first and fed separately, even in the field---the whole "popote" schtick. Even caporals got in line first. No attempt at even distribution. The last guys in line often got screwed. And then you had to clean the mess gear of the caporals, NCOs and officers. One good thing in the Legion; you usually got a beer or wine ration, even in the field, even in the jungle or combat. They even had special gerry cans for wine. In garrison, mess hall wine was hose siphoned from 55 gallon plastic drums in to old Orangina bottles. As the food was served "family style" you had to scramble/fight for it or you got screwed. There were other piecemeal individual field rations. The best field rations ever were AMERICAN LURPS issued in Guyane. And don't get me started on the hygiene in the chow halls.
What a waste of food, just nibbling it for the views.
