This is from the "End of a Era" concert, the whole band is sick, and EVERYONE on that stage knows EXCEPT TARJA at the end of this show that they are going to fire Tarja from the band, there is a lot of emotion, drama, and uncertainty in the band, this concert defines the show must go on. I implore you to watch it fully once you are through a lot of Nightwish, but before you go to Poet and the Pendulum.

Nightwish's original lineup is what got me into classical voice, why I took it in college, why I became a vocal technique nerd. I will always love Tarja, and in the proper environment, her voice is unmatched as a classically trained opera singer. That being said, Floor also changed my life, and has such versatility, and I am so grateful she joined the band. Floor is quite simply my favorite singer of all time. Having become a vocal technique nerd, that's how I became able to so deeply appreciate Floor. Tuomas sure knows how to pick them!
(all the musicians, btw, not just the vocalists)

Tarja and Tuomas were classmates at school. So you could say they picked each other. According to Wikipedia, Tarja's voice ended up changing Nightwish into a metal band instead of what Tuomas and Emppu initially planned. You can also see what a wide variety of music Tarja has performed outside Nightwish: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarja_Turunen
      Talk about versatility :)

I think there are more details to why there were people crying when song started. It was highly anticipated last show in their world tour. Back to their home country and band came guns blazing from the start and there were no time to waste between songs.
    1. Dark Chest of Wonders - greatest show opener ever
    2. Planet Hell - great drum intro, Marco shouting "Hartwall Arena !!!", big explosion and basically whole Arena roof came down.
    3. Ever Dream - nuff said.
    4. The Kinslayer - This is maybe little bit forgotten song nowadays, but it was very impactful song at the time. It is about the Columbine High School massacre.
    5. Phantom of the Opera
    Atmosphere and intensity was immense.

Big Nightwish fan here. Tired of 'arguments' about 'who is best?' From the beginning, the band has been evolving, and like all things that evolve, the changes become apparent over time. Sometimes it's sudden, other times subtle. All of those things are part of the Nightwish Journey and development, bringing them to where they are now. It's sad, of course, to see people go from the setups we are dedicated to, but as a true member of 'The Army', loyalty to the band's overall genius is unwavering and supportive, and I'm excited to see where they go from here. The answer to 'who is best?' is simple: Nightwish.

Tarja and early Nightwish are for me the definition of symphonic metal... Floor is a great singer, but her strength is in how versatile her voice is. She really shines in the newer Nightwish songs and she made some of the older stuff her own, it is different but still great. But there are songs that fit the previous singers better. I love all Nightwish singers, each brought something unique.

Thanks, David, for another great review. Your score was appropriate. You're right about Tarja being classically trained. The original members of the band are from Kitee, Finland, where there is an above - average music school. That's where she, along with rest of them in the band, got started. When Tuomas founded the band he recruited his schoolmates. You hit the nail on the head about the differences between Tarja and Floor. Floor's style is much better for a metal band, while Tara's strength is in opera and classical. I always find Tarja a bit stiff on stage when I watch her, especially compared to Floor. I agree with you about the two of them being good at their strengths and both being amazing. I'm tired of the "who is better" debate. I do prefer Floor *for Nightwish* because they're a metal band, but I also love Tarja. My boyfriend falls into the category of those who worship Tarja and think she is the holy grail of Nightwish. People forget that Tarja and Floor are not the only ones who are/were in the band. Look at that phenomenal performance that Marko gave us in that song! Tuomas arranged it and created that compelling atmosphere. Jukka and Emppu gave their all. It's not just about the lead singer, and I'm glad the band chose to continue after they parted ways with her. Tarja has a thriving solo career and millions of fans. She's more than just "the former lead singer of Nightwish." People need to move on. Thank you again, and happy New Year!

    • @mnewm21
      @mnewm21 2 года назад +7

the other thing you have to remember is that Tarja is a lot younger than Floor whilst she was with Nightwish. You watch young Floor and she didn't "move" terribly well on stage either she just did what most singers do. I agree that Floor is a more traditional metal singer but Nightwish were not really a metal band 😲they did have metal influences but that wasn't their original thought, they just found an audience with metal fans as we were willing to listen to "different" and we were far less prejudiced than pop music fans! The fact that they incorporated metal styled elements didn't hurt though!! You look at the first few albums and the music is far more ballady and gothic than it is "metal" that came later as they realised where their audience was. Early Nightwish would be 1 heavy song for 3-4 lighter songs. The emphasis has always been on storytelling and that is the continuing theme through to the modern day and as their music has changed Floor has become the perfect singer to incorporate all the catalog even if she isn't the best singer for every song.😃

From the End of an Era show in Helsinki 2005 which was Tarja's last show with the band.
Tarja and Marco were both not feeling good and Jukka had a migraine, but they all performed anyway.
I've heard that Andrew Lloyd Webber has said that this is his favorite ,or 1 of his favorite, versions of the song.
Yes Marko kills it. He also kills it on their cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes from this same show. (Tarja was offstage during that song for a wardrobe change).

Tarja is leather and rivets headbanger when she sings rock. It's a different approach by the genre. I smile when Floor's fans say Tarja doesn't headbang, doesn't sing agressively, or only does operatic vocals. If you keep watching her performances, you'll find out that there's both the art singer and the rock singer. Which role she does more? Yeah art singer: that's where her focus has been what comes to developping skills.

Really good reaction to a really good song, I find NW version interesting as it's different and obviously much more metal then the original, for me Marco absolutely stole the show.
Fan fact, this was Tarja last show with the band, she was fired the day after with a public open letter, maybe we can see the guys were not so comfortable.
I agree with you not to say who is overall better between Tarja and Floor, good move, it really not matter. Everyone of us has his favourite, my is Floor but I like Tarja as well, and I listen often to her too.
But I also agree Tarja is a better opera singer and Floor a better metal singer. In fact Tarja is an opera singer who does metal, she said many times she wanted to have an opera career too, and at some degree she did it. It must had been so difficult for her to be introduced in the Opera, I can imagine other opera singers whispering "oh yes, she is the metal girl".
Floor said she doesn't like opera and wont do it, but she can sing in opera style when needed. Also Tarja is a full opera trained singer, Floor did only 1 year conservatorium, so it make sense.
We don't have a NW version with Floor or Anette, when Tarja leaved Marco said "at least we don't have to perform that song anymore", and they didn't.
But if you want listen to Floor doing this, she did at the Beste Zangers tv show in 2019, with Henk Poort, who is the Dutch Phantom and one of the ALW preferred ones, so he might be good :P
A more traditional version then with Marco, and for that reason interesting.

I know band recieved critic for it, but i still think they published it so that fans would know the truth about what happened. I'm not sure it would have been better to just announce that that she is fired and not give any reason.. Guess we will never know.

Live versus recording: The words "great ending" or "amazing intro" are often stated. This is one rare band that is more than incrementally better live than in the studio. Some add a little flavour here and there, but Nightwish can take even their iffy studio songs and make them epic live performances.

Absolutely with you on not picking the favourite. I have favourite Tarja songs, I have favourite Floor songs. I definitely have favourite songs written for Tarja that Floor absolutely knocks out of the park (Ghost Love Score for one). And I still have songs that I prefer Tarja's version over Floor's. Like you said, it's a balancing act, and what's the most important is the emotional connection. And in some songs that connection is just that much bigger because Tarja, as you said it, is not your run-fo-the-mill metal-fronting woman. She stepped into metal from an opera background and with Tuomas' writing skills invented the genre, or at the very least was instrumental in defining the genre of symphonic metal. They made it work, and work well.
When I hear the Elvenpath, I am immediately telported into a forest, and her operatic voice absolutely shapes that illusion that I'm hearing an elf singing.

Hey David. Loved your reaction. I agree that overall, Floor brings far more to the Nightwish table than Tarja, as she is able to belt and growl in a manner more suited to the genre and some of the songs. But neither is superior. They just have different qualities.
This is a personal perspective, but this cover, and a small number of other Nightwish songs, are far better suited to Tarja's vocal qualities, classical training and tone. And for this particular track, when you add Marko's incredible vocals to the mix, the interplay between Tarja and Marko, the musicianship of the band, plus the musical arrangement of Tuomas, then this performance is pretty darn special....

Well - I saw the thumbnail of your video just 14 minutes after you posted it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch it right away, although I was very curious about your opinion. Especially since I know this show from the very beginning, I mean I heard it back in 2005 when it was made. Was I surprised by your reaction? No! Did it disappoint? Ha, ha - both yes and no... Yes, because I expected to hear something that would give me food for thought, something I hadn't noticed before. And no, because you said everything that I myself could say about the performance. You said there was no point in comparing Tarja and Floor, and I totally agree. But still, you analyzed and in a way compared these two great singers. And I have to tell you, that was one of the best comparisons I've heard - I totally agree. They both move us, they both give us joy - each in their own way - I return to the performances of both often. Do we need anything more? I don't think so. And that Marco's performance particularly caught your attention? Well, it could not be otherwise, because Marco is doing an excellent job here!
So? Great performance, great arrangement, great execution - I enjoyed great music with you again this evening! Thank you!

  • @athlonen
    @athlonen 2 года назад

First, you're right about the ending. That is not in the original recording, as the track you heard was the album track, while this one was live. As mentioned, this was at the End of an Era show, in which you'll be coming into the details of that, which will lead you to the next 2-3 Nightwish songs you'll be reacting to (hopefully along with research into the events that lead up to those songs).
Additionally, it is the album track that you listened to, that Floor Jansen and Henk Poort used when they sang Phantom of the Opera as a duet. By extension you'll want to react to that, but isn't really needed because you already know Floor's abilities and can easily nail that song. The key to that particular duet is that Henk Poort actually played the Phantom in the Dutch production of the musical, and is Floor's idol, so it is serendipitous that the current singer of Nightwish sings the cover of a song with the person who played the character in the musical.
As far as this cover goes, while the musical showed the Phantom to be simply a troubled soul, Marko in this case decided to make him sound more sinister. Everyone forgets that he's responsible for someone dying in the theater! So instead of treating him as a troubled person, Marko truly makes him sound like a bad guy.. and that isn't even getting into the BDSM aspect of the song. Oh, and props for noticing Jack Sparrow on the keyboard stand!

A lot of reactionists want to say band members' names the way they are said in their native language. What comes to Emppu and Jukka, English speakers don't say the double consonant PP or KK as long as Finns do. Also your PP was too short, if you wish to perfect it. My reply is usually: say as you wish. Imitating foreign sounds to get words/names sound like the natives say, that's near an impossibility anyway. But yeah getting closer is possible if one wants. If Finns would write how they hear English speakers say Emppu, it often sounds like "empy," the double consonant being too short. Yeah with Tarja pronouncing J is often noted, but you got some trill there in R, and that's what most people forget. A strong trill in the R, but it is still a short consonant, doesn't last long. That's hard if one usually doesn't have strong trill in R.
