the Montego had a the turbo system designed and tunes by lotus..also I think they did some work on either the breaks or the suspension. crank up the boost, fit a big set of Mini lite wheels and those cars were weapons, same woth the Ren19

Both Iconic cars, as a kid, I've always loved the R5 for its mad looks and exhausts, but the Uno was my first Italian car that I became a fan of. My uncle in Italy had the standard Uno, and I would always go whenever my uncle drove his Uno around the village, at times I would sit in the driver seat and pretend to be driving the car 😂, so I may be biased towards the Uno. Both were great cars in a time when hot hatchbacks were cool. I would put the Tipo up there as well I love those cars, not many don't get that lol but they're such cool cars would love to own either the Uno or the Tipo.

Ah for me it would have to be the Uno, mine was red and black outside and black and red inside, and all those years only had like 30,000km when I brought, I did about 20,000km in it. But I was young and foolish so just kept chasing the horse power... So I am guilty of wanting one again, sadly where I live that at any price is not an option. To my ear that Uno doesn't sound right, almost like it isn't running on all four some of the time... Thanks for the review, and I do think looks more modern now, well at least on the outside.

my second car was a MK1 Uno Turbo so i'm obviously biased but I think for a proper fair comparison you need two standard cars to compare. I'm not a fan of the body kit on that Uno and much prefer the standard look, its lugging extra weight around . I think David Cirioni has done a comparison on these two if I remember rightly. The buzz with an R5 is the original Turbo 1 with the mid mounted engine

I grew up with cars like these, I was 17 in 1991. I had a few Uno Turbos, so underrated here in the UK. The UK press slated them for torque steer and understeer and the looks were quite understated too. I'd have the Uno all day over the Renault - I had mates with 5 Turbos and they wouldn't start when they were hot as the fuel vapourised in the carb. The Renault had the headline 0-60 time which was quicker than nearly everything else similar, in the days of What Car magazine and Autocar stats sold cars

My mate was a Fiat obsessed mechanic and he had a turbo in black that was Mk2 front end but Mk1 rear as he said it got the best bits of both versions. Had lots of Abarth stuff going on as I remember. I never saw it run as it was always in his garage collecting dust for some reason. I went to buy it off him but walked away as he talked too much and I couldn’t get a word in edge ways. Another mate of mine gave him the nickname’fiat to death’ cos he never shut up about Fiats! True story that. I’m a fan of fiats. I currently own an Alfa GT which is my baby. lol😂

None of this Euro junk was reliable.. 😂

Out of the two, I would pick the Uno turbo, but if we include all then a Civic or a AE82 Corolla are better in every way. The pipework on the R5 looks mad, imagine trying to find a boost leak. Never mind Tonys wheels, why is he driving a JUKE?

Love Unos, the Turbo was a pocket rocket of course in the day got a lift in one when I was 18, holy crap… less lairy but great the SXie was one of my favourite cars. Had a white one, wonder if there are any left on UK roads? Renault was always a bit more boy racer and image not helped by Ali G. Personally I think both have aged well but the Fiat (certainly the mk1) absolutely timeless and would love one.

Great channel boys love your content, I'd take the Fiat any day looks better, sounds better, better engine + it's Italian but that's just my opinion sorry Renault fans, you boys should get a Lancia Thema 8.32 and give a review on one of those.

And you can’t drive them in the same way the r5 is more nimble rev and gear changes are completely different it makes you engage with the car
The uno feels more rigid like it doesn’t have flexibility disconnecting the drive feel more for people who aren’t very skilled drivers
Just telling you how it is
    Respect to all

Love them both but me personally it's the r5 there iconic however I would not pay the price. Round my end it was escort turbo r5 or Vauxhall nova gsi, I had 7 novas, I now have corsa b 16v I prefer n/a power. I love the uno engine bay hate the r5 engine bay. It's all about personal preference.

I had a uno turbo and 2 brothers i knew both had Renault 5s, we never got to see what was the fastest as the two Renault's were never on the road at the same time 😂

    Loving your video
I had a 205gti back in the day
But always wanted a turbo car
Been in both r5 & uno
My pal had an uno mk1 arbarth
With full leather and spax suspension with a mild tune
    What a car
Turbo lag is the best thing about these cars
The fiat beats the Renault 😅

I'm from the 70's I'm 50, I remember both cars, fiat Uno were sheds, Renault 5 Turbo were nice cars but the dash was absolute junk on the R5. R5 was a 1 of a kind shape, no other car had that shape. My first encounter with a turbo car was my niehbour had on when I was 11, we had a Sierra 2.0 estate, my niehbour took me out in it, about 3 months later where we all used to go ride motobikes in the wood the turbo was in there on brick minus the wheels 😂😂😂😂

I contributed to the R5 hype (with my 12+ year old R5 video) & it is deserved, great car if you know what your doing. As for the piping, that can all be deleted. I also owned a Punto GT and the turbo location under the intake manifold is a headache, compared to the side mount on the R5. R5 was one of the first amongst hot hatches at the time, to come standard with discs all round. R5 problem is they are not safe in a crash.

That R5 engine bay was not standard so the complaining about pipework was mute.

i had both in 90ties, white Uno i think 90 ended totaled on the roof and blue 89 GTT ended with blown engine and 1.7 at the end.. GTT was way faster at least mine but it had loads of issues with cooling etc, both where very excitinng cars and i glad i owned them.. Later i had Golf 5 GTI and it was boring exp. after these two and then i quit on sports cars bcs all of them where boring or to expensive to own.. You have to be very agressive with these cars to know what they where about..

Uno turbo they love over 20 psi. Look how many head bolts in head. If I remember correctly didn't Lancia develope the 1.3 engine or play apart in developing it.

Lovely cars but no way I’d spend silly money on them, when I was in my 20’s these cars were dirt cheap. Prices are mental nowadays! By the way, I’d pick the Uno…although I am biased 👍
