My first birth, i was on all fours. Pushed my daughter out in 9 minutes 💖💖 the doctor tried to get me to lay down, my husband told him i wanted to give birth on all fours. YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO LAY WHATEVER WAY YOU WANT, DO NOT FORGET THAT MOMS. Also don’t lay on your back the whole time in labor. It makes the baby’s heart rate drop

I get SO frustrated when hospitals refuse to allow free movement simply for convenience’ sake. I am convinced that women being forced to lie on their backs during labor lead to so many unnecessary interventions that in turn cause many unwanted side effects. I had a natural home birth, and the two times I needed to lie on my back through a contraction (for fetal monitoring) was THE WORST torture of my life. If I’d been in a hospital being made to do my whole labor on my back, I would have been begging for an epidural or something to stop the absolutely horrific pain of being on my back. As it was, labor was hard, long, and painful, but I got through it, thanks to The Lord, my birth team, a birth pool, and the ability to change positions as often as I needed/wanted to! ☺️ So grateful for all the great info on this channel, I have recommended it to so many others who want to birth naturally at home or in the hospital! ♥️

I will be making my care providers watch this in the future! So helpful. I did not have an epidural during my first labor and was forced on my back during pushing. My body knew it was wrong. I kept telling my providers I needed to be upright and on hands and knees. That was when I felt the natural urge to push. On my back that urge disappeared and I felt this insane pain. I'm not exaggerating when I say my OB yelled at me: "This is how we do it. You either get on your back or I'm leaving." I wish first time moms were aware of how coercive and emotionally abusive providers can become in this final stage. I was told I could give birth in whatever position I wanted by my doulas but when it came time my provider literally yelled at me and would not help if I did not do it how he wanted. I was not prepared for that.

Hi Bridget, could you make a video with a few tips on how to advocate for yourself in changing positions, etc? especially when the medical staff is being kinda pushy or guilt-tripping you into doing one thing or another. I'm far from even wanting to be a mom lol but I came across this video and the whole time I kept thinking, just based on my previous experiences with medical staff on completely different scenarios: I can't imagine nurses and doctors being on board with you wanting to change their plans. In my own experience, healthcare staff can be a bit harsh and relentless with what they think is right for you. I want to clarify that I am absolutely grateful for the work of doctors and nurses, but some times the line of who makes the calls becomes blurry, and I can totally see that happening in a situation like giving birth.

    • @erinjackson2360
      @erinjackson2360 3 года назад +20

I also think this idea for a video would be so GREAT and encouraging. I have had two hospital births and felt discouraged due to my lack of being able to voice my preferences and advocating for myself. Whenever I wanted to do something differently than what the staff thought was convenient, I was questioned and felt like I was constantly having to defend myself…something really hard to do when you are trying to birth a baby naturally. I would LOVE a video on this topic.

midwives and labor & delivery nurses are usually very aware of all these positions etc and much more likely to allow and even encourage you to change and use more effective positions (especially if there is a birthing centre at hospital). of course it will depend on the hospital and the individual staff. I recommend Nurse Zabe on youtube - she is a labor and delivery nurse in US and has some really great content

If you're going with either an OB or Midwife, set an appointment for consultation once you find out your pregnant.
Discuss with them all options about giving birth, positions, unmedicated and medicated interventions, etc.
      .
Shop around before you settle on the person who will deliver your baby. Don't settle. Make sure to call hospital to find out what they allow or don't allow during labor and delivery.
      .
Don't settle for any hospital. Your health is a priority, the needs of your baby and body are important. Don't allow any medical professional to threat or bully you into any position.
      .
Make sure to have one family member present during the entire process to advocate for you. Don't go in alone.

Thanks so much for your video, Bridget. I'm an American living in the UK, and have given birth to my two sons here (now pregnant with my third child). While the NHS certainly has its problems, I LOVE the midwife culture here, and the focus on mother-baby well-being and natural processes. It's made me very curious about how maternity care in the US became so 'medicalized', and so dismissive of more body/nature oriented ways of thinking. I'm sure it's an interesting story! I didn't think anything of it at the time, though I thought I simply couldn't go on because the pain was so unbearable. I actually asked for an epidural but never got one because the anesthesiologist kept getting pulled into emergency c-sections. Anyway, I'm wondering now if i would have been able to cope better in a different position or not. Pushing on my back felt great for what it's worth. 3 "breaths" and the baby was out. Hey Lauren! I am a pelvic health physiotherapist working with moms - I would recommend for sure doing the perineal stretch a few weeks prior to your due date to make sure the scar tissue is nice and flexible. Here is a video to help you: ruclips.net/video/1YVqMIa_73Y/видео.html You will also want to use breathing out technique while pushing (as opposed to blocking the breath) to have a more progressive stretch on the pelvic floor. I review breathing techniques on this video: ruclips.net/video/sIBnLrTt7y8/видео.html Also I don't know what the context of your tear was, but for women who had a fast "explosive" birth leading to tearing, I recommend low gravity position to push (such as on the side) so you can better control your pushing speed and slow things down a little bit. Anyway - hope this helps!!! Good luck 💜

I wad basically squatting with a birth ball until it was time to push i was uncomfortable a bit but then just felt relaxed to be laying down i think i wanted to shift to my side a couple times but it was a reasonable easy birth alhamdulillah. I think bevause my baby then wad a bit under and now i am gonna find out if they'll do the side position. I had such a long nice labour 2 and half days so blessed with the breathing techniques you showed.

This was the biggest disappointment during my birth experience - I wanted to give birth in the tub, but they kept telling me to lay back even though I wanted to squat. And then because it wasn't working they forced me onto the bed even though I wanted to stand at the edge and let gravity do its thing. So I gave birth lying on my back with my knees up holding my breath. I'm thankful for an easy labor, but I hated the delivery part because I was in so much pain that I couldn't think straight enough to advocate for myself. Couldn't have my doula because of covid. Ended up with a 1st degree tear and am scared that I'll be forced to do something I don't want to again if I have another baby.

I don't know where you're from, but I live in South America and was also so dissapointed by this...
When I hadn't got the epidural yet, my body was telling me so bad to sit down, move, but the nurses kept telling me to stay on my back. At one point I even asked a nurse "how come I can't be in the position I want, if I'm the one who's giving birth???", and he simply replied "I'm sorry, you can't". I was so vulnerable and tired that I didn't do anything about it. But whenever I remember it, I get so frustrated and sad.
The birth went well, but the worst part was when my son came out of me, and they literally put him on my chest and then took him away for about 2 hours without giving me any explanation. We're both fine now (he's 9 months), but those missing hours with him will always ache.

It is well known that laying on your back (or in the missionary position) is one of the hardest and most painful ways for a woman to push a baby out. So, why do so many hospitals even use this position anymore? 80 to 85% of the hospital birth videos on RUclips have the woman on her back pushing. There are so many proven and better positions that can easily be used during delivery.

@Amiana Hair Had my baby on June 4th, so he's just past 3 months old now 😊
As 'prepared' as I felt I could be, I rather wish I had a doula with me (next time??). I was induced at 40w5d because the pockets of amniotic fluid they could see were not very big and there was calcification of the placenta. Used pitocin and like others say, it really kicks contractions up a notch. My contractions were small for the first 8 hours on it, then around 3:30am they were getting more powerful and closer together. My water broke at 5am and my contractions were lasting a solid minute with about 30 seconds in between. During this time I was standing and leaning into my husband, moving around a little, and would squat down during. Not long after my water broke I was feeling like pushing, but was sort of discouraged to do so. I don't remember exactly what was said at this point, just that I was encouraged to be on the bed where my legs could be spread while my husband and mom held them. Then I pushed for 5 hours 😜 Here is where I would have liked a doula to step in and say that I needed different positions. About 3 hours into pushing, we finally went to the squat bar, but I had so much pelvic pain we quickly moved to side lying. Baby really wasn't moving along much at all. After that long, and far too many cervix checks, I ended up with an epidural and a c-section. While I appreciated being numb from the epidural, I had really bad cold shakes that were worse to deal with than labor pains IMO.
All in all, healthy and happy baby was the goal and I got that. Hopefully I'm not scaring anyone with my story 😂. Though c-section was not in my plan and I do think there were other things that could have been done, we both made it out just fine. Those first few weeks pp are a doozy though. We need to talk more and prepare more for that transition, and the US sucks for maternity leave.
Have an advocate for yourself who is clear on what to do to help you along! And our bodies were made for this 😀 😊

She didn't mention any issues with baby or any other reason, and I felt like I had more gas in the tank...
I'm now pregnant with number 2 and terrified something like this will happen again. I felt so manipulated... any suggestions, Bridget, please!!
