      @@StephenLeGresley Yeah, back in the day they didn't care about continuity much at all not even having these people even return after a token episode. Things were not consistent episode to episode. It's cool to see they respect the history these days.

    • @tiacho2893
      @tiacho2893 Год назад +10

      Yeah!!! First the writers dreamed it up, then the producers OK'd it, and the producers asked Susan Gibney to do the voice part. Most shows do not do that kind of commitment!!!
      It's kinda like the throw-away ad lib about "Jennifer" became a running gag, then a joke (generic name for an Andorian), then a voice role. Now that throw-away ad-lib is Mariner's romantic interest!!! LD really rewards fans that rewatch episodes.

    It has to be said that, as batty as he is, Migleemo actually gave Tendi really good advice in his own way. To be a science officer requires more than just knowing stuff. It does require proper leadership skills such as the ability to voice your findings even when you have to fight the captain to make yourself heard.
    And while I’m sure any Vulcan would struggle to avoid rolling their eyes at the sentiment, the idea of being the ‘Voice of Science’ really does ring true.
    I can’t help but wonder if Migleemo actually did read Spock’s forward in the manual and just distilled the whole thing down to a few words since those ideas really do sum up a lot of what made Spock so effective in his role. McCoy, himself would have been proud of such an effective bastardization. 😂

    Absolutely the very best example of "It wouldn't be a day in Starfleet" has to be the TNG episode where Weasely falls in love with the shapeshifter girl. When they get to the planet they are taking her to, they cannot talk to the people on the surface because there is "too much interference for communications". Remember, when we first saw it, it was Riker's old ship and was dropping-off Will, Geordi, Beverley and Wesley. Also, that Borg snake was definite nightmare fuel. Snakes alone are terrifying for me, but a giant Borg one was even worse! I think there also should've been an Up for the final shot of the Cerritos and Carlsbad. They looked absolutely beautiful and more higher-quality than usual. As our perspective shifts slowly across the scene, there's a wonderful little reflection off the windows on the hulls of both ships. Finally, good catch with the Starfleet Delta cheese & crackers! Means the two away teams were just settling into what they assumed was a long wait, because that device wasn't used unless the cave was bloomin' cold, or the 'captives' had already tried everything. Instead, it looks like it was amongst the first things done after bringing the same oddly very specific bit of roof down - just enough to block the entrance, but no further. My latinum up is definitely confirming that Mariner and Jennifer are in a relationship, even if its "no labels" right now. We already knew Mariner was bisexual, but this is awesome. The idea that she both dreams of a real relationship but fears being "tie down" (perhaps she's poly, which makes sense as a lot of Trek characters are on the down low) is just human psychology, though Boimler telling her she needs to go back to therapy over it is just 1) true an b) perfect delivery line.
    My trillium down is also the captain bickers, but it was ALMOST the missed opportunity to have Jessica join the ensigns in the lounge and just hand an arm around Mariner. They BOTH DESERVE HAPPINESS! Show it on screen, don't just reference it with a dream sequence.

      I think its "Jennifer." And from what I remember Andorians have... 4 genders?

    • @jamesfoster9613
      @jamesfoster9613 Год назад +3

      @@leokim2998 right yes, I knew it was Jennifer (edited OP) but blanked for some reason
      That said the four biological sexes (two of which are typically but not always masc and two of which are typically but not always femme) is unfortunately non canonical, the only canon hint at it is Data mentioning Andorian marriages requiring four individuals. How that interplays with Andorian gender I'm not sure, because in non cannon novels all four are required for procreation, but sex and gender are separate constructs and in Trek medical science is so advanced that gender transition should be a complete process, which is amazing.
      So in cannon Jennifer is she/her. But even if it was canon that there were four genders, Mariner would still be bisexual, as bi can mean "yours and other genders."

    How did you skip the "running gag" that Boimler is clueless about "love". The moment where Boimler and Ensing Kearns has a moment outside where they try to call the ship at the same time + in near end where she looks loonging at him it seems.

      Boimler needs a love interest, would be nice to see someone finally be able to poke through his cluelessness... although I still think it really ought to be him and Mariner, those two have a shared energy that I doubt either of them are at all aware of yet it's DEFINITELY there. 😅

    This episode was pretty good. Dr. T'Ana with the chain saw was my highlight, made me laugh REALLY hard. However, one thing I'm missing is the continuation of the stories. What happened to the Pakled? What about that whole story of framing Captain Freeman? Is that whole story over? And what about Rutherford's implant? They teased us with a huge story line in episode 2x10. And since then, nothing happened.
    I love the show, love the characters (esp. Dr. T'Ana), love how they combine classic Trek with comedy,... But I'm starting to get a bit impatient with the storylines that were started, but are not being moved forward.

    •  Год назад +8

      Have you seen 3x01? Some other more important ship did a cool mission and found out about the Pakled plan to frame captain Freeman. The Pakleds blew up their planet (hopefully they remembered to evacuate beforehand) so they are not going to be a threat for a while. Then again maybe they are now all a big homeless fleet.
      Anyway this whole show is about someone else doing the cool stuff like first contacts and freeing planets from supercomputers. The Cerritos cleans up after that. Even todays episode was like that. There was this mystery teased but then that got seemingly resolved while the opening theme was playing.

    The end joke about scientist selling Federation secrets to get better equipment is the best joke of the episode - if you've ever worked in Academia. Getting that grant money is hard and you always missing that thing that would make your experiments finally work. It also ties nicely to Ransom's rant in the beginning of the episode being dismissive of science training as opposed to Star Fleet one. Maybe the equipment funding follows the same logic (it may also be a dig at all the science grant funding that US DOD does). After all it does often seem in Star Trek like you need to join the military to do the coolest science.

    One thing i liked was one of the fears in the background. It was a giant raisin with sharp teeth and tentacles. This is probably Boimler's fear since he's from a raisin vignard and is in direct relation to his dream of being needed by a superior officer and ranking up. This is because going back to the vignard is his fear taken form.
