  • This is a product review of the Lunt 40mm F10 hydrogen alpha telescope. I purchased this telescope at retail with my own money and my opinions are my own. I also discuss other entry level solar hydrogen alpha product alternatives.

    Just came across your channel today. Thanks for doing this great review. I have one of these scope’s on order (won’t arrive till mid September!).
    Keep up the great work.

    Many thanks, Mark. I'm awaiting delivery of my Lunt 50 and it feels like I made a good choice, given the performance you acheive with the 40. The 60 would be nice too but I can double stack a 50 for less cost than a single-stacked 60.

    I think one nice thing about the 40 is it's ( in comparison with the 60 tilt) less sensitive for seeings. And the glass at the front looks nicer then in the 60 too , only the small blocking filter and the focuser could be better.

    Thank you very much for this review! If you could review the 50mm in the future and make a comparasion against the 40mm, it will be Great!

      Sorry but I can't afford to buy every model! If I got one on loan though I could do it. As aperture increases detail should increase. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks so much Mark - I find all your videos very informative...I'm looking at purchasing the LS40tha to get me into Ha imaging. The seller recommended a b600 blocking filter if planning on imaging but you seem to have got an excellent image with the b500 blocking filter...I could save some dollars if I could purchase the b500 model...do you think as a newbie I would be able to achieve the same full disk results as you with the smaller blocking filter? Also I might have missed it, what camera were you using in the 40mm? TIA

    • @AZASTROGUY
      @AZASTROGUY  3 месяца назад +1

      @@beanixrising The B600 is really a better-suited blocking filter for imaging. I’m expert and have taken and processed thousands of solar images. I used the IMX174 camera but you should review my solar cameras tutorial to be fully informed before you buy one.

    Hello, would you say that a BF1800 (compared to the BF1200) is worthy or even necessary when it comes to the Lunt 100?

    • @AZASTROGUY
      @AZASTROGUY  4 месяца назад

      Short answer is no. I have talked to their technical expert (Brian) about this at length, and I even visited Lunt and he let me do a direct comparison with my Lunt 100MT/B1200 vs the 1800 and I did not see any difference. The 1800 would be necessary for larger apertures though.

    Great review thanks. Its an expensive hobby compared to night time astro but there is a lot of second hand equipment out there. I got a Coronado PST second hand at a very good price and similar results to the Lunt, though its less suited to imaging so you have to work a bit harder. I don't think there is so much second hand Lunt stuff about at present but if you have the funds its looks like great gear. I hope someone buys Coronado from the ashes of Meade. Choice is good.

    Thank you for the review, I'm looking for a starter HA Solar scope and the 40 seems to be a good one to get my feet wet. Do you have recommendations on the camera to pair with it? And is the 5mm blocking filter a good option? There's a 6mm and 12mm option with the scope (6mm is a small increase in price, but 12mm is more than double the 5mm price.) I can't see dropping the money on the Lunt 100mm until I know I can make use of the 40mm in my seeing conditions. Thanks again!

    • @AZASTROGUY
      @AZASTROGUY  4 месяца назад +1

      If the budget can handle it, the 6 mm blocking filter would be a good choice. The 12 mm would be overkill for this aperture. Regarding cameras, you should look at my separate RUclips tutorial on choosing a camera for a solar telescope. Good luck!

    Nice review, thanks. I have the Lunt 40 mm SS and 80 mm universal DS. I really don’t get much more resolution with the 80 vs the 40, which might be due to my terrible sky conditions. Or likely user incompetence.

    • @AZASTROGUY
      @AZASTROGUY  4 месяца назад

      You should get considerably more detail with your 80DS compared to a 40SS. I used to own an 80DS and when I upgraded to the 100 I noticed an improvement but it was gradual rather than dramatic. Have you checked the blue glass in your blocking filter on the 80MM? It should be clear, not foggy or speckled. They can be replaced for $10. Suggest you also review my tutorials on how to capture and process solar images. Ensure your focus is spot on.

      @@philipps3988 It's a great F7 APO. But I already have a TEC140 and a TEC160 so I don't really need that aspect of its capabilities. I have tested it in 'night' mode and it performs well. It's in my review.

    A better comparison, IMHO, would be with the Quark Solar Scout, a 60mm telescope with the Quark unit built in.

    • @AZASTROGUY

      @@charlesalexander8099 yes but I have not tried it. The second stack makes the image more contrasty but dimmer, so I’d be a bit concerned with just 40mm aperture
