Solar capture process update July 2022
Very thorough and detailed handling of the subject. Even after several years experience at Hi-Res, H-alpha imaging I learned some new ways of doing things. Thanks.
@@Tricyklist much appreciated!
great tutorial, very much appreciated.
0:07 Hi I have the Antlia filter, How would you rate it by itself? I am new at EAA and AP. I started slowly 2 years ago. Thanks Victory Pete
Antlia makes a lot of filters. I like the Antlia RGB filter. Their narrowband one is good but too narrow for EAA
I plan on doing AP at some point. What Antlia filter would be good for EAA to compliment this one?
@@peterleveillee1321 I only tested their RGB and narrowband. The RGB is good but the focal length of the narrowband is different and requires refocusing. In EAA you're doing a live public event and want to minimize non-presentation time so I prefer filters that can be swapped and no refocusing is needed. I don't know if Antlia makes a parfocal narrowband filter.
Hi Mark, Outstanding, your videos are always great. I love the details and the work that you put into them. Now it comes down to which Lunt to buy. Please keep them coming..
I would love to learn how to do this type of photography. Your videos are absolutely beautiful and stunning. I’ve always been fascinated by our star.
Excellent video Mark, This is the most informative solar video I have watched - the detailed descriptions of what you can see was very helpful. Fortunately I must have purchased a good Quark as I am very happy with it. If I do go further with solar work, it would be a Lunt 100. Our astronomy club has a Lunt 130 with incredible views. I just made a video comparing my ASI178 to my new ASI174, not as thorough as you. I referenced your video on how to choose a camera at the video. (ruclips.net/video/zpXpDk9BwS4/видео.html). Cheers
@@AstroQuest1 thanks very much! Glad you got something out of it!
Where can I find the 2024 version of NAFE - thanks
I got an evaluation copy. I have asked the author to release it but it’s up to him. You should ask him too
Thanks so much Mark - I find all your videos very informative...I'm looking at purchasing the LS40tha to get me into Ha imaging. The seller recommended a b600 blocking filter if planning on imaging but you seem to have got an excellent image with the b500 blocking filter...I could save some dollars if I could purchase the b500 model...do you think as a newbie I would be able to achieve the same full disk results as you with the smaller blocking filter? Also I might have missed it, what camera were you using in the 40mm? TIA
@@beanixrising The B600 is really a better-suited blocking filter for imaging. I’m expert and have taken and processed thousands of solar images. I used the IMX174 camera but you should review my solar cameras tutorial to be fully informed before you buy one.
@@AZASTROGUY Thankyou so much...b600 it is for me then! ;-) Yes I've watched your tutorial on selecting the right camera/telescope combo - extremely helpful! Many Thanks!
Great overview mate! :)
need more inf on lenses and telescopes to start!!
@@MrXTDiver you should see the newer version of this video. Plus, I have a separate video on choosing a solar telescope.
Hi, Mark. This is a brilliant piece of work. I ordered a Lunt 50 a while back (awaiting delivery). As per your Lunt 40 review, this video affirms my choice. But you have also provided so many other great tips and things to consider. Recommended viewing for anyone wanting to get into solar viewing and imaging. Many thanks. Paul
@@pointcookobservatory thanks Paul, much appreciated!
Great work!
Very helpful. Thank you
Nice.
Fantastic comparison and explantions. All of you images are spectacular, so good I have trouble deciding between them. I purchased a ZWO ASI178 four years ago to use with my Quark attached to a and Orion ED80 F7.5 refractor. The ED80 was my original DSO scope that was collecting dust so decided to make it a dedicated solar scope. Needles to say I got side-tracted and did not do any solar imaging until now. After watching the this and other videos I know the 178 was not the best choice for the longer FL setup using the ED80 with a Quark so I purchased an ASI174MM Pro. The images are much better. Thanks for videos, I am finding them quite helpful. Cheers
Thanks. I'm working on a new video on how to choose a solar telescope I how to post soon. Cheers!
This is very helpful! Thank you!
Great! Hope you get some sharp images!
Stunning detail.
That is so amazing. I have a much smaller Lunt 40 Double Stack on order, and I can not wait to use it.
Check out my recent view of the Lunt 40mm single stack
As soon as I saw your video come in, I hurried over to the computer. Thanks
Superb imaging! Would be worth entering the Astronomy photographer of the year (solar section)
Thanks for the kind words. Which competition specifically are you referring to?
@@AZASTROGUY See this site, instructions on how to enter. International global competition. www.rmg.co.uk/whats-on/astronomy-photographer-year/exhibition
@@AZASTROGUY Probably refering to the UK Royal Greenwich Observatory one that's held every year in collaboration with the Sky At Night magazine. Each year there's an exhibition (at the RGO in Greenwich London UK) of both category winners and short listed entries - and a 'coffee table' book is also published.
Another great one
Thanks Richard!
I've been a Photoshop user for 20 years. Now thanks to you I am considering Affinity! I do all types of photography and glad you are showing solar! Thanks!
Nice pics.
Thanks
New to solar imaging…most all of the videos I’ve watched show taking 3 sets of images (surface, prominence and flats) but on all the post processing videos this tidbit is omitted. What is the process for this, or did I miss something. Thanks, really enjoy your videos! Michael
Look at the 2024 update tutorial. You only need to capture 1 2000 frame video
Thabnks for the video. Question: Are you using the Hinode on an alt-Az mount ? I find that mine cannot even stay guiding when an EQ mount is too far off from north alignment
I use that guider on both a TTS160 Alt-Az and an equatorial mount.
Mark, I'm trying to create a mosaic with the SC solar mosaic tool and cannot get Affinity Photo to stitch the images. At the 8:30 mark you indicate that you going to make a video. I sure need it. I cannot figure why the tif images won't stitch correctly. Thx
ruclips.net/video/9vhxo7Ou2LQ/видео.html time stamp 30:58 Good luck!
@@AZASTROGUY Thanks, somehow I missed the end of that other video. I don't know how or why? That's exactly what I did; except my source files that came from AutoStakkert were generated from ser files that were created in Sharp Cap Pro using the "solar mosaic" routine that is in the sequencer tab? Did you have a tilter in your image train to fix Newton rings that produced these 6 files? I had the ZWO version attached to my ASI432.. Again, sorry for missing this in the other video!!!!!!!!
This same transit is going to happen in my city in a few hours. Hoping to capture something half as good as this with my DSLR+Telescope!
New to all this Solar imaging… all my planetary cameras are one shot color…can they be used, or do I have to go and buy another camera?
You will only get good results with a mono camera
I do have a Lodestar that I had been using as a guide camera for the deep sky stuff…would that work at all? Thanks for the quick reply. Michael
@@AZASTROGUYif not, can u recommend a reasonable mono camera? 33:27
@@mtcosta111 The Lodestar might be a great guide camera, but from looking at the specs it has a 8.4 um pixel size and very slow frames per second. To recommend a camera I really need to know the focal ratio you will be shooting at. For example, a Lunt at F7, or an apochromat in white light at F9, or a Quark on an F7 at F30? You should at my 'how to choose a solar camera' tutorial which explains all this. Also depends upon your aperture and whether you really want to see a full disk or whether you want to zoom in on prominences. Check out the video then let me know if you still have questions. Good luck!
Great content thank you so much! I processed my latest halpha images seamlessly thanks to you 🎉
Fantastic! Glad it helped!
Wonderful presentation … very informative and educational. And what can I say about your images? Only WOW!
Excellent work, Mark … very cool
Thanks!
very good tutorial, tips, tricks and explanation in using SharpCap
Very cool!
Your first try? Amazing clarity. I assume you took a video, can I ask the frame rate you used? I did the ISS years ago with a DSLR and telescope, but it became a black dot crossing the screen. Now I have a dedicated astronomy camera and will be trying again the next time it passes near me. I guess the faster frame rate, the better? Thanks for all your videos and help.
1.2 mSec exposure, 82 frames per second.
@@AZASTROGUY Thank you sir. I'll note those specs.
pretty cool!!
Nice.
Please reupload at 4k!
Man, I'd love to see a high res version of this that wasn't mangled by RUclips re-encoding it. So beautiful. Thanks for sharing all this stuff from your Namibia trip!
Looks great! Will you do a tutorial about this?
Will add it to the list!
Would like more info on the costs in Namibia. Would like to do this myself. Also, is it possible to travel there with own portable rig? Did your bring your camera and Asisair along or did they provide them?
For costs, just go to the Kiripotib website. There were a lot of Germans there who brought their OTAs from Germany and just rented a mount on a pier. We just brought ZWO2600 ProDuo cameras (to avoid guidescope complications), ASIAir's and cabling. And of course 240AC/12VDC adapters. DM me directly on Instagram or Facebook for any other details
Just came across your channel today. Thanks for doing this great review. I have one of these scope’s on order (won’t arrive till mid September!). Keep up the great work.
Spaceship Earth keeps truckin along … beautiful shot.
Nice.
Hope to see the southern night sky some day!
Move to Australia
Just an observation - If thats your room @2:50 there's a reverse cycle air conditioning unit on the wall above the bed which means the room is both cooled and heated
The heating part was disconnected. Believe me.
@@AZASTROGUY It either works or it doesn't, by design these units have both heating and cooling - you can't just disconnect the heater. I lived in SA for 20 years and spent many times in Namibia. Did you complain about no heating? I know first hand that these people are very accommodating and would have moved you to another or even fixed the aircon for you
The management is very clear that there was NO heating of rooms on the property
@@AZASTROGUY You video is very negative, you come across as if you have an axe to grind! Even on Guest Farm Kiripotib website which is where you stayed, it clearly states that all rooms have aircon and looking at the images of the rooms they are reverse cycle. All you have done in this video is 'rubbish' several different African business who I know from first hand experience would bend over backwards for international tourists as yourself. Not the best form from you!
Neat.
Thank you for the review, I'm looking for a starter HA Solar scope and the 40 seems to be a good one to get my feet wet. Do you have recommendations on the camera to pair with it? And is the 5mm blocking filter a good option? There's a 6mm and 12mm option with the scope (6mm is a small increase in price, but 12mm is more than double the 5mm price.) I can't see dropping the money on the Lunt 100mm until I know I can make use of the 40mm in my seeing conditions. Thanks again!
If the budget can handle it, the 6 mm blocking filter would be a good choice. The 12 mm would be overkill for this aperture. Regarding cameras, you should look at my separate RUclips tutorial on choosing a camera for a solar telescope. Good luck!
Many thanks, Mark. I'm awaiting delivery of my Lunt 50 and it feels like I made a good choice, given the performance you acheive with the 40. The 60 would be nice too but I can double stack a 50 for less cost than a single-stacked 60.
Nice review Mark
