      man I mechanic for a living just bought a used truck (keeping the ole 7.3).. and the hardest part is leaving my family.. I've been offered 6 figures jobs in the oil field and declined because of my family.. the reason I'm choosing rv transport is I'm my own boss... I'm business savyish penny pencher, my main goal is to get home w. least dead head..but I dont want to neglect my family.nothing is worth that... I'm tight waded and business savy, I just want it to be worth it.. my goal is raise capital to support the start up of a new business when I get home and also learn the business.. I guess since u r doing it I can ask.. is it worth it to you?.. I have so many questions😂😂 but I'll spare u the torture

      @@dreamchasers5577 pulling singles 6 years ago and I started out with to old 7.3 diesels and then bought 2 L5P diesels new in 2017. And ran 4 trucks 3 other drivers worked out great 👍. They my 7.3’s started having transmission issues both of them. And I bought like 5 transmissions and still couldn’t find a decent transmission that would last average replacement trans lasted 20,000-30,000 miles so got rid of this in 2020 and bought 2 new 5th gen rams huge mistake as both trucks fuel systems went out at 72,000 and 76,000 still under warranty but both trucks still today haven’t gotten fix due to parts unavailable now I ready to replace these trucks with haul and tow !

      I'd throw out the advice of not worrying about deadheading. If you know your numbers and what you NEED/Want to bring in on a monthly basis and break it down to a weekly goal/marker then you just figure out what loads you need and you may find you can get back to another outbound load faster than if you're waiting around because of the old trucker adage of "I aint moving the truck if it's not loaded."

    Being a mechanic for over 20 years, I can tell you that each job is assigned a time allotment from
    the manufacturer . Whether or not it takes said technician that long is irrelevant. There is lot more to doing a job than just the actual service. It would take way to much to try to detail it out in a comment, but please be mindful that there is a reason for it.

    • @dreamchasers5577
      @dreamchasers5577 2 года назад +1

      yes I actually mechanic on tractors and trailers and u r absolutely right.. not to toot my.horn, but I'm one of the best in my area..a 40hr job knocked out is 15-20 still pays 40hrs

    • @WeekendTruckin
      @WeekendTruckin  2 года назад

      I appreciate the insight! If we're referring to the fuel filter change, I'd total disagree on it being listed as an hour of labor, as the they tried charging me for. I get the logistics of walking over to the parts department, getting the area "prepped", disposing of the old filter, etc. but the reality is you can change out both filters in under 5-10 minutes while at the truck. add another 20 minutes for other tasks, maybe... But I agree on other items being factored in. I think it's worth noting that that time was created by one side of the transaction with profits in mind and in favor of that side. But then the old adage of "if you don't like it, do it yourself" applies too!

  • @BlueCollarDIY
    @BlueCollarDIY 2 года назад +1

    I think most dealers and many mechanic shops have a book they go by as to how long a job/repair should take and they charge you based off that, not how long it actually takes them. Probably why your tech wasn't in any hurry to get you out.

    • @WeekendTruckin
      @WeekendTruckin  2 года назад +1

      I'd agreed on that, but then they tried, and after taking a half hour off, to charge me by his time clock. smh!

  • @crkerriklein
    @crkerriklein 2 года назад +1

    In the automotive or truck tech industry, every single job has an hour requirement. It behooves every technician to move with purpose, because they get paid the same way you pay. More vehicles in and out, more money for them. Remember occasionally they might do a job that on paper should take 3 hours, it doesn't matter if they work for an hour or 6 hours, they're only getting paid three.

    • @WeekendTruckin
      @WeekendTruckin  2 года назад

      That's what my thoughts were, especially on something as basic as fuel filters!

      Fair enough! The thing I like most about starting super early is you get done and don’t feel super tired and just wanting to go to bed after driving 11 or so hours! I guess you’d have the mornings if you start later though too!

  • @TheMinnow101
    @TheMinnow101 2 года назад +1

    There’s a price to pay for immediate repairs and service work. You drop in and want your filters changed out immediately, it’s gonna cost you. Why didn’t you have the other shop do it the day before as they kept pressing you to do it ?

    • @WeekendTruckin
      @WeekendTruckin  2 года назад

      I'm fine with paying the "convenience tax" and that's why I called ahead of time opposed to just showing up. They said it wasn't an issue and they'd be able to get me in. I called a shop that was only doing roadside and said it'd be $300ish to come out and do it so advised I do it myself and told me where I could buy them. If they would have said it's X-price because of A,B, and C, I would have been fine with it or would have decided to do it myself, but a normal service like they spoke of is not an hour plus parts for changing filters.
      The filters weren't needing replaced other than it was getting into the negatives, temperature wise. If I was headed south they wouldn't have clogged up like they were doing.

    I was in need of a oil change and fuel filter one time pulled in at pilot fueled up , went to shop at the pilot they wouldn’t change oil , well I said I have filters if the aggravation of getting filters is the problem They said no it’s your truck !! some may be considered "risky" and "fine worthy" but maximizing the PC guidelines of having two hours to seek shelter is the big one. It's a gray area and if a level 3 inspection happens COULD result in being shut down for however long that warrants, but how can an officer go back and see if there was no parking at the three options you had to park- at night- as you were just trying to find a place to park that you felt safe for the night!?!?!? Again- definitely risky and maybe involves a few white lies, we'll say, if you get confronted... but, if you feel good to drive, why not drive!
